Tascam ixr.. any good?

Comments

  • has an MFI certification, but does not appear to charge an ios device. alas.

  • Yeah I noticed unlike the new Zoom h-24 and 44

  • I own one, I like it. I'm actually demo'ing LooptunesHD on it at NAMM

  • i have it. bought it as a stop gap until the audio fuse finally stops being vaporware.

i bought it last year and never used it though, other than to power it up and test it. it can be powered by a portable battery bank and it can fit in a backpack easily. well worth it for you cats who do a lot of ios recording.

  • I have the Tascam US 2x2 interface which is very similar to the iXR save for a few cosmetic differences. The US 2x2 came out first, but the iXR was released less than a year later.

Both are class compliant, fully iOS compatible. Both have 2 mic/line inputs, 48v phantom power, MIDI in & out and direct monitoring with ability to mix the DAW & direct signal to get the best overdub monitoring cue mix without latency.

The major difference is that the US 2x2 is connected to an iOS device with the Camera Connection Kit or if you want to charge the device while recording, the new USB 3.0 to Lightning Adapter.

The iXR however has 2 USB ports in the back, one on a Type B connection (the more square end female plug, sometimes called a USB printer cable) and another more ubiquitous USB Type A connection found on every iOS charging cable, etc. The Type B connection is to power the iXR interface and the Type A output is basically like the CCK & USB to Lightning connection, sending the interface into the iDevice.

Tascam was smart to make the iXR pretty much a US 2x2 in a thinner case with a USB to Lightning connection built in. Street price has the iXR usually around $160 while the US 2x2 is usually under $140 now. I looked at Sweetwater just now and there's just a small difference over there with the iXR being $10 more.

I'm happy with my US 2x2. I needed an interface and I've owned lots of Tascam gear with never any problems. I like the desktop look to the US 2x2 more than the flat Behringer looking design of the iXR, but if it were out when I was looking for an interface I probably would've gone with the iXR because it has its own Camera Connection Kit style Lightning connection built in.

Check the Tascam sites (.com & .eu) for more details, but I wouldn't sweat picking up either one...great stuff.
