Help with Abelton link.

Hi. I'm hav a bit of trouble with connecting link with my iPad and iPhone. I'm thinking it may have something to do with my network but not quite sure. See when I'm trying to connect the two together they just keep searching and searching and never connect. Anybody have any ideas??

  • Hey @gav, Link connects on either a LAN or an ad hoc WLAN network, but will not work on a VPN (virtual private network). [taken from website]

So just make sure you're on the same wifi network (typically the case) when using your two devices.

    Can find more here: https://help.ableton.com/hc/en-us/articles/209776125-Link-FAQs

  • Make sure they're both on the same network. Might seem obvious, but I have two and sometimes they inexplicably jump over.

  • Thanks for the replys. They are definitely on the same wifi network. I hav a Bt home hub. Also I'm not using a vpn. I'm really confused as to wat it could be.

  • Hi gav, to rule out your router, if you can tether your iPad to your iPhone, then link will work across devices, without both devices having to use the router. That's how I connect my devices when I'm away from home at work.

Hey. I got it working with mobile hotspot. So I'm guessing it as something to do with my router. Still hav no idea wat tho. Any idea how much data link consumes? I Only hav a few gigabytes of data

If you use your mobile hotspot, I would assume Link doesn't use any of your mobile network data allowance, since you're not downloading or streaming anything from the internet. It's just a device to device connection. I haven't noticed any data usage on my mobile from Link.

I'd be interested to know if this was the case :)

There wouldn't be any need for it to use any data. You should be able to turn off the mobile data in settings and it still work.

You actually need Mobile data turned on to create a personal hotspot. It won't let u create one. I'm sure it would use some data maybe not much tho

  • Link doesn't use any data whatsoever. Its just a local connection.

That's strange you can't turn off mobile data, might be an ios limitation. But no data is sent because you can run link on an ad hoc network without an internet connection.
