MusicRadar's 10 Best New iOS Music-Making Apps of 2016

edited January 2017 in General App Discussion

This came out 12/6, but I just noticed it. If you click their menu on iOS apps it still brings up their 2015 list.

I imagine this will be a somewhat controversial list on this forum.

It drives me nuts when people make a 2016 10 Best list and leave out AUM and iWavestation

IceGear Mersenne
Liine Skram
VirSyn VoxSyn
Electro Harmonix Mini-Synthesizer
Audulus 3
Yamaha FM Essential
Blocs Wave
Arturia iSpark
Korg ODYSSEi
Moog Model 15 (WINNER)

Leaves me wondering, how would the author complete this sentence:

Apps best for doing ... ?

Yep, AUM would be in my top 3. I can think of several in that list that wouldn't even make my top 100.

  • Agreed, lots of great stuff but Link and AUM were ios revolutions. Im suspicious this author uses apps together!

I was disappointed at Blocs Wave. It could maybe pass as an app for getting ideas, but it's really just plugging in instrument samples together. Not my idea of a music app.

    Skram just isn't good.

Mersenne is ok, nothing mind blowing. I'd forgotten about it til I saw the list.

Haven't checked iSpark since the debut because custom samples and layering was glitched.

The Electro Harmonix is a neat little thing, if nothing special. I can see it being included near the bottom of a top 10.

VoxSyn didn't grab me immediately, but I'll reserve judgment even though I haven't used it on a track since I haven't spent much time with it.

Audulus is Audulus. Worthy of inclusion. Personally I preferred the previous version.

    Haven't bothered with the Yamaha.

Odyssei would be my # 3, behind AUM and Model 15. They'd be my co-favs since they do drastically different things. If I could have only one, then give me the Moog.

Where's the Klevgrand and Brambos stuff? Along with Shoom, the Wavestation and Phonem, they'd round out my top 10. Scrolling through the pages, a lot of forgettable stuff last year, but the top 10-12 is pretty solid.

Yes. It would be sad, if this is all what you can do with Blocs Wave.

You can record your own samples and it's scenes make the song structure work very intuitive (perfect companion for GTL) ITOH the launchpad pack sharing is also useful and so lot of royaltie free material make it perfect for sketching ideas and compose beats.
Maybe it's not your idea of a music app but it has been one of the bigs with AUM for the past year.

  • Generally these kind of lists smack of paid promotion. Having said that it is always good to see IOS being talked about even at the cost of us slowly becoming less of a niche (good thing) folk.
