Demo of Alchemy in Garage Band
Ok - I'm sure a lot of people know how great Alchemy is already... But it's now available back in iOS in GarageBand so I thought some people might be interested in this quick demo thing I knocked up.
It's literally just one single Alchemy instance/patch (Lunar Pools) played over 64 bars, with different parameters automated over a number of passes. You should get a taste of how deep, rich and evolving (and all those fluffy terms) Alchemy can sound.
The trick to doing this in Garageband is:
- set 'merge recordings' to 'on' and (after you have laid down your notes) overdub the knob twiddles.
- be careful just to record one pass per knob. If you start writing back over a knob's automation it will jump around horribly as it doesn't seem to properly overwrite the previous automation (instead, stop and use undo to blank the last automation pass you did).

Started out with Aurora Over Iceland and 64 bars later I wanted to kill myself (not enough sunlight maybe), but the twiddling is most certainly a thing. Going to take some happy pills and choose something later in the alphabet.....I could see that everyone could get/choose/bagsy a sound as their own and we could end up with a very odd (long) album...

Have you got it overdubbing those knob twiddles? There's lots of fun in that direction.
Yup. Took me a couple of goes, but then the light went on. My problem (in life) is being subtle enough in its application. Rome wasn't twiddled in a day...

It's nothing special, but for some strange reason I sat glued to the screen for the entire length of the video

Since requirements for Alchemy are at least an iPad mini 4 and I have a 2 it won't work. Guess I won't bother redownloading GB

It's actually all very quick and clumsy, but I can see there's a lot of possibilities in your method for giving more character to generic (ish) sounds....
Used the 'drummer' in GB, very quickly, almost as an afterthought. I am ashamed to say I can't remember who posted it, but there was an excellent video about the GB drummer, showing how you can take a base pattern and then change it piece by piece, giving more character etc. Far more fluid and interesting or textured than might appear at first blush, which I suspect is true all round about GB ....
Thanks Boss, any and all points to Matt for sharing the little 'trick' which I probably wouldn't have sussed. This is actually a clumsy quick stumble, but in more skilled hands there's room for good stuff in this method....

The impediment to my inspiration: How do extract these awesome sounds from the GB sandbox? Play alongside to another piece in AUM, then grab the recorded stereo GB file?
