Session band tempo sync question

Still pretty new to the iOS music production scene, so apologies if I'm missing something simple. I created a 32 bar chord sequence in Session Band Acoustic Guitar at 104 bpm, did Audio Copy into Audio Share, and then recorded from AudioShare into Garageband via IAA. I set the GB tempo to 104. After I trimmed the audio and dragged it a bit so that the first chord hit exactly on measure 1, beat 1, I was surprised that Session Band's 104 bpm and GB's 104 bpm were exactly the same. The timing in bar 31 is just as solid as the timing in bar 2. When I created the same chord sequence in Session Band Ukulele, 104 bpm, copied to AudioShare and recorded onto a new track in GB, the tempo drift is noticeable by bar 3 and unacceptable by bar 5. So a few questions: 1) Why would 104 bpm in Session Band Acoustic Guitar be so different than 104 bpm in Session Band Ukulele? 2) Is there any way to match the Session Band tempos to exactly follow the GB tempo? 3) Assuming the answer to 2 is no, could I somehow sync the 2 Session Band recordings to each other and then record them collectively into GB rather than individually? 4) Is there a better way I should be doing this, such as Audiobus? Thanks in advance for any help!

  • I always have had the same issue when exporting SB tracks. Whatever BPM you set in here never matches with anything else so you have to mess with editing. But, Cubasis was able to get the track to automatically match my other tracks with the new stretching algorithms. Going to try some more and see, but other than that you can also try Blocs Wave.

  • Thanks, @MusicMan4Christ. I chose Auria Pro over Cubasis, and probably don't want to spend $50 just to try to get this to work. I don't know a thing about Blocs Wave, but I'll check it out. I just thought it was very strange that the 2 Session Band apps had such different interpretations of 104 bpm! I ended up splitting the uke track into 32 different 1 bar audio files in GB and nudged them around as necessary. If you solo the track it definitely sounds odd, with some chords chopped off a tad and others starting mid-attack. But at least now there's no drift and when mixed a little lower combined with the other instruments it's a tolerable workaround. I just can't believe there's no way to at least get the 2 Session Band apps to sync their tempos. Thanks again for the feedback!

When you go troubleshooting, and forgot you already asked about it a year ago…

  • Sorry, user error on this. I forgot to change the tempo in Auria. Lesson learned

One basic trick to improve this problem is avoiding non-AUv3 Apps. It has an implicit social contract that it will work in your AUv3 compliant DAW or it will be considered a bug. I'd be surprised to see Session Band deliver AUv3 apps. They do sound better than iReal Pro but cost more to make and sell fewer copies.

We probably won't see a great "real players" style AUv3 App unless the "Band in a Box" Borg cube shows up on the iTunes Store. I can see them selling it as a standalone that won't sync with your DAW too in the first assault on IOS.

You hit on my biggest headache with IOS music making: synchronization. It looks like to found a workaround. Keep your problem solving skills handy. Synchronization problems are
like little landmines waiting to drive you crazy. Is it the DAW, the App's or IOS in general?

IOS does audio plumbing really well but getting everyone to follow the conductor is so hard.

  • Hey just saw this about the trouble with session band apps syncing…. I have had same issue… what seems to work best is to use 4 bars lengths on everything and use loopy pro with the loop threshold recording feature clicked to on….. I set the tempo first in loopy because it seems to work best and I set the bar length of the loop to 2 or 4 bars and then just arm the loop and flip over to the session band app and click play… it’s the only way I have found (without a lot of workaround) to use those apps… other than that I have done complete projects in session band app and put it in AUM and just play guitar on one track and sing on another over top of them… I know this isn’t probably best way but it’s what I do
