Garageband update:)

Whoa.. did garageband for iOS just get pretty real? I am downloading the new update as I write this. This looks like it may be a game changer for guys like me who are trying to learn. I love the ease of access of GB. It looks like we are getting some more professional content. Now if we get the iOS version up to 24 bit and the ability to change time signature in a song I'll be really stoked! This is going to make learning and getting ready for my eventual jump to Logic so much more fun:)

Comments

  • Yes it's quite good. I got my start on iOS music using GB 4-5 years ago - then moved on to other apps - but came back to it about a year ago and use it for maybe 50% of my tracks.

I've been enjoying this update quite a bit more than I imagined I would. Sometimes Auria kills my vibe when I've got a number of routings to contend with, even more so when it decides to crash. And I'm finding this new version of GB to be a fancy new playground that doesn't come with any headaches. It's dead simple like it always has been. But with AU effects, Alchemy Jr. and such, it's definitely grown up in a good way. And I'm getting some solid material from it!

Here's a fun experiment: while most all of the Apple loops are quite goofy charicatures of various genres, they become something else with a little abuse. Drop a few into a project then go to town slicing them up. Then, using the region inspector for each slice, set them to play back in reverse, slow them down and then shift their pitch to the extremes. Then feed them through some various and extreme AU effects and all of the sudden you've got some really interesting sound design going on!

Also, you can change the time signature in GB by tapping on the wrench > time signature. Is that what you were wanting? Or maybe more options for time signature? Also also, the jump from GB to Logic is VERY seamless. You will feel right at home after you jump ;)

I want to do multiple time signatures in one song. I'm into a lot of different genres, including progressive metal. I can map out multiple timing changes to the grid and metronome in Auria Pro but I haven't found a way to do it in GB. I'm pretty sure it isn't supported. Until it is I'll have to record my metal tracks in Auria, which sucks, because I'm not quite advanced enough for that program. It's over my head and frustrating to me at this point.

Sounds good. Are you experiencing the now legendary "optimizing performance" PSA?
The longer I stay away from the audio tracks the better...and it's glorious. Once I start adding audio then that's when GB likes to start interrupting workflow to optimize.

Haha...I get that optimizing performance BS within the first 5 minutes every single time I mess around in there. Even with just synths and NO audio. That, unfortunately, is proving to be a deal breaker for what is otherwise a hell of a lot of fun. Would be nice to just optimize the damn performance from the get go!

Ahh, gotcha. Yeah that's well beyond GB's capabilities. What aspect(s) of Auria do you feel like are over your head?

  • I'm still using an iPad Air, and love GB. I've been reading something about this new version not working on an Air, or is it just the Alchemy integration that doesn't work?

Do you use the "master effects" ? I'm experimenting with a track now with two KLEVGR pad instances , 1 Ruismaker, 1 iSem 1, Poison 202 and two audio tracks ---where I haven't used the master effects so far no optimize. On the lead vocal I'm using RP-1 delay and Audioverb reverb.

Perhaps the issue is related to the Auxiliary bus implementation in GB

Interesting. I use some reverb and delay occasionally, but nothing too heavy. I'll avoid it and see if that gets me error free. I have all those synths you mentioned so I'll use that for my next recipe. Thanks for the tip!

  • I saw the EQ got better, did the track compressor get any changes? It was hard to use without a ratio and threshold knob, and reduction meter. Pretty hard to tell when it's kicking in, just by ear.

Barring that, can you do AU fx per track, after you record, and use an AU compressor as an insert?

Yes it has ratio and threshold now

Yes you can get up to 4 AU fx per track. Including compressor AU's

Keep in mind that GB did not support AU effects when the majority of these were developed, so developers did not have a chance to test for bugs/incompatibilities. I'm sure there will be bugs and potentially even projects lost as a result.

When you say you're not using any master effects, do you mean you're just not sending any signal to them from your instrument tracks? Or have you found a way to completely turn them off? If you have...do share! Otherwise, I think they're just always on in the background, so not sending any signal to them should have minimal effect on CPU performance.

It's about not sending signal to them. The theory is that once GB senses that signal is being sent, it starts to consider "optimizing", even if the CPU doesn't need the help.

  • Like @brice said: GB isn't set up for different time signatures, but that doesn't mean you can't - you'll just have to figure out where all your new time sigs start along the GB track window. Keep notes...?

I was playing around with a parody of Bowies' 'Fame'; the song starts off in 3/4 for a few measures then goes to 4/4... since the vast majority of the song is 4/4, once I got to a point I selected all the tracks and moved them to where the main 4/4 section would start at the beginning of an appropriate measure. Then onward...

  • Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but here it goes......The audio effects from the previous version seem to not be available for new tracks. These effects are still there in old tracks in the new version even with the new interface format. Are the old effects still accessible for creating new tracks and I'm just missing it?

I can see under "Fun" or "Other" where they have for example a Telephone effect, however the new Telephone effect is different from the older version (same thing for others).

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

  • (I think) I've noticed that everything is there that was there before the update (not counting the new options), but it took some time using the new interface a bit to find it all - still haven't got it 100%!

  • (I think) I noticed that GB has a 'feature' that either is new or one that I never noticed before... or I'm nuts. But something happened.

If you have a bass line or some such that you copy to paste into other parts of the song and change note particulars in one of these copies (or the original?) GB seems to alter the other copies to match. I say this because I was editing the bass line in my cover of 'Tank', starting with the one piece & when I went to the next one to alter it - it had changed itself to what I changed in the first piece! I checked all the others in the song that I was going to change (but hadn't yet) and they were all updated as well!

    I think.
    Or thought.

Because I can't get it to repeat in a test song file, and although I was startled when I first noticed it I'm trying to figure out what may have occurred. Unfortunately I didn't keep track of what exactly I was doing leading to this 'discovery' because I didn't realize it was going to happen. Hate when that happens.

  • So i got excited and downloaded the update again. And alchemy is great, the chord pads on all instruments are great but something was off. And I realized why I don't like GarageBand: the damned excessive animations every time you navigate to a different part of the app. Everything's got to slide over or flip around and honestly it adds up over time creating a sluggish feeling that is not conducive to music making imo.

  • Wow, the new visual, touchable eq for each track is really nice. So easy to find/ fix problems. I just wish we had more than the one band/LP/HP. And no Q?

...sorry, I intended this post to be a praise/compliment. The eq really is good ...for what it is.
