seeking voices for installation

Hi all,
This is Ben from Olympia Noise Co. I'm working on a new sound installation and am seeking recordings of voices. See (and share!) this facebook post for more info: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10158166145245302&set=a.424928770301.372725.844920301&type=3&theater

  • Seeing as you're Mr. Kamen, why not make a free app that:

    1) plays an A for reference
    2) can record a note
    3) can play back the recording (to test how one likes it)
    4) can send it to you

Or a web audio record app that you could point people to?

I only suggest this stuff because I've done similar projects and had a hard time getting non-music folks to contribute (and thought "If I ever do this again, I'm going to make an app so tech isn't the barrier").

    github, to the rescue? https://higuma.github.io/web-audio-recorder-js/

Their sample app allows the user to download the file but you could just as easily POST it to your own server.

    Nice sleuthing Mister Bear

@benkamen How will you be able to identify the range/ratio of human diversity in your received audio clips?

  • @decibelle I'm not planning on doing a demographic analysis of the voices, but so far (with the few entries I've received) I've been pleased to get several from out of the US. And almost entirely female voices. When I do get down to the business of composing the actual installation, I will likely sort them by octave and let the other qualities of the voices blend together.

In any case, please send your voice!!

@benkamen I have some questions, would you please elaborate:

... What organisation/event is the installation is for?
... What is the installation going to be?
... How will the voices will be a part of it?
... Approximately how long it will the installation be up?
... What will happen to the recordings after the installation is taken down?
... Who else will have access to the recordings before, during and/or after?
... Are you being compensated for the installation at all?

I have no opinions nor judgments on the answers, it's just that knowing exactly what I'm supporting is very important to me. I've felt so very very awful way too many times already when I found out later what I didn't ask before, you know? I'm trying to learn from my mistakes. :)

As long as I feel comfortable knowing exactly what I'm participating in, I'll be happy to do a recording for you.

    I like this.

But think of the 1 star reviews it'll get for lack of features! ;)

Will add my male, non-US 'gargle' to your collection Ben.

  • @decibelle Thanks for the questions. Yea, I've realized I should make a public event page so I can discuss the piece in more depth, and clarify what it will be.

... What organisation/event is the installation is for?

I'm organizing the installation. There is no date yet for the event. It will occur in Olympia, WA, probably this spring or summer. Probably at a gallery or music space. I don't know yet. If people outside of Olympia want to help me do it else where, it may happen elsewhere.

... What is the installation going to be?
... How will the voices will be a part of it?

It will be a multichannel sound installation. 4 to 8 speakers. The voices will be the primary (and perhaps only) source material for the piece. Voices will be played independently, in small groups, and in layers of hundreds of voices a time. They will be played unprocessed at times, and also pitch shifted to make chords, perhaps with volume envelopes on them or effected in other ways to create textures. It's highly unlikely that you'd be able to recognize an individual voice in the piece. And the piece won't be picking specific voices, it'll be doing things like "play 100 voices chosen at random at the pitches C and F in the next ten seconds, spread evenly out across the speakers," or similar types of instructions. The way I've done this in the past is to gather source material, clean it up, and then "compose" by making Max/MSP patches that interact with the material.

... Approximately how long it will the installation be up?
Likely just one night. But if I have the opportunity to leave it up longer, I will. .

... What will happen to the recordings after the installation is taken down?
They will remain in my possession and not be shared. I'll hold on to them for possible future re-installation or documentation purposes.

... Who else will have access to the recordings before, during and/or after?
No one. (I guess the one exception would be if the installation was set up somewhere without me being present, the organizers would need a copy of the MaxMSP patch, which would have the audio included with it. But it would not be publicly available, and the person would have to be a real jerk to use them!).

... Are you being compensated for the installation at all?
I've done a bunch of these types of things and have never once received money for one. It's unlikely that I would be compensated for it, and much much more likely that I will spend money to make it happen. In the (unlikely) event that I am offered the opportunity to say, fly somewhere to do the installation, I'd probably accept the opportunity, which wouldn't be possible to do without being compensated.

Thank you very much @benkamen , that's perfect, awesome, I'm happy to oblige now. :)

On re-reading your requirements for the vox, I realise I don't know what "sing warmly" means, and indeed am unable to imagine what "cold" singing might sound like! Heh. :)

In all straightforwardness, would you please clarify how you imagine temperature-controlling human singing? Thank you lots. :)

  • Ha, it's a reference to a Pauline Oliveros piece. Here I think warm means, clear and open, a voice that blends well with other voices.

Hmm, ok, could what you're looking for be described as "singing gently"?

  • I dunno. Whatever "warm" means to you!

Awesome page update @benkamen way helpful! :)

I have a suggestion answer for the "why" ...

"Because creativez gots to create, yo."

By the way when I asked what the event was for, I meant was it a charity fundraiser (which charity?), or to celebrate a gallery opening (what gallery?), or a memorial anniversary of remembrance (remembering whom/what?), etc, is it for anything like that?
