Money for nothing, apps for free

Here's a game. Let's assume you had no money whatsoever. Imagine you had no job, and all the money you ever had had disappeared long ago and all you face from now on are recurring bills and rent and outgoings, no income. Imagine that somehow a fairy godmother had placed an iPad - a usable modern one - within your custody, but flew away before you could mention anything about iTunes vouchers or paying for feeding this thing on your lap.

How far can you usefully get with iPad music making without spending a single unit of currency? What apps would you put together to form a viable production platform or suite, that in total cost nothing, zero, empty.

Can it be done?

Addendum: a few rules, I suppose.
1: GarageBand has a price on it, and let's assume it will cost money - I know some people are claiming that it was free for them, but I paid for it a long time ago and have never seen it be free, I've always seen it have a price attached (admittedly a low price) - even now you'll see that it has a price. So, whichever special condition makes it free sometimes for some people shouldn't apply here. For this thread, it's not free, so don't include it.
2: The iPad is not going to be sold. You're stuck with it. It's not even yours to sell, it's 'contributed' to you but unfortunately no money in the iTunes account that was also 'empowered' to you was supplied, and you've no way of altering that. All you can do is 'buy' free apps, that's all, that's the limit, that's the game.
3: The game isn't about avoiding the game - buying something else, using a PC, going fishing, etc. It's how far can one get with just using free iOS apps (actual RRP free apps, not even 'free this week' or 'free for a day, once, years ago' apps - regular free that are always free apps).

  • Download Garageband. Done I guess (I don't use it myself).
If we expand the question a little bit though, "music making", does that entail recording or performing? If we are to look at apps that could integrate with other apps etc (and excluding Garageband for some reason) it sort of limits the search somewhat. There are loads of free apps that doesn't connect to anything else.

  • I could make do with gadget le for sure, don't want to.....but i could

  • Well, I paid for GarageBand and I believe it still costs money (ie, isn't free).

  • Hackery, quakery, gunpower and plot....but enough about my plans to make money to feed my app addiction. I think a comb and some old-fashioned Jeyes , a cigar box bass and lyrics that start "Woke up this morning, I was out of my mind..." would see me off to good start.

  • I would sell the iPad. Really. First thing on the morning .

Garageband has come free with new devices for the past few years (along with the iWork apps). So I suppose it depends on which model the fairy has brought.

Fuck, I actually bought the iWork apps, too. Bastards.

  • There are several apps that are quite good and don't cost anything, among them - Figure, and Auxy.

I would probably use Auxy Classic (it has midi out), Diode-108, Nanologue , etc

First of all if all my money was gone long ago how can I pay for rent and outgoings? I'd sell the ipad so I can eat, to hell with music making. It's not like I'm goofing around humming supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!

  • Honestly...In that scenario...I would sell the iPad.

  • Ah, it's an unsellable iPad - fairy godmother gave it to you, if you attempt to sell it it turns into a horse and carriage before you can sell it. You're stuck with it

  • It's a trap, she is wicked!

Sounds like a curse..are you sure there's a big musical number at the end of your movie?

You'd be better off with a junk PC and copy of Reaper. Then you could download a bazillion free vsts.
If you had no money this would be the scenario then - find PC in dumpster. Go to area with free wifi and download Reaper (indefinite free trial), download free vsts. Done. Free iOS apps are terrible in comparison.

  • Sell the iPad, buy a cheap old laptop then install something like Tracktion 5 or Podium Free and lots of freeware plugins.
An iPad with free apps is just not viable enough to make Complete projects.

  • Learn how to use Garageband / sell the ipad - especially if it's a 'Pro'.

  • I will visit every blog doing gift code apps. It's not money involve and I could use the iPad for visit those. I get some apps in this way when I have not marging to buy everything I want :V

If only SunVox was free (as it is on PC/Mac)... :)

  • They say that there's no such thing as a free Launchpad.

Which is sort of true as the main app is free, but to do anything useful with it you have to spend some sheckles.

  • The problem with Apple and especially the iOS devices is that they aren't futureproof. So even if an iPad was handed to you and you used free apps Apple would be releasing updates that would make the iPad and the apps obsolete and with Apple's new policy on iOS11 where 32bit apps will be removed it means those apps are lost forever if your iPad needed restored. Also, Apple has this annoying thing where downgrading iOS is next to impossible.

  • Rob a bank; use the money to load up the iPad with fabulous apps; write a catchy tune about the robbery and subsequent getaway; get arrested; become a pop icon. Rose and Valerie screaming from the gallery say he must go free!
