Who here owns a raspberry pi?

Just out of interest, no particular motive.
Who has a Raspberry Pi?
Or maybe an Arduino?
Or a BBC Micro:Bit?
Or something else like one of those but is actually different?

Or perhaps you don't have anything remotely like any of this sort of thing at all?

  • I have a Raspberry Pi. I forget if it's 2nd or 3rd generation. My brother gave it to me loaded with various arcade and console emulators. I haven't used it much. But I've been meaning to find out more of what else it's capable of handling.

  • Well, Sunvox, for a start.

  • What I've just realized is that this poll is useless. What if I want to select more than one (because I have more than one of these)?

  • Tell you what, I'll delete the poll, just mention what the things you have are, like a normal person would do.

  • 1st generation Pi. Plugged it in. Too slow for anything useful. Bookend.

Really? I had no idea. i've heard of Sunvox for iOS but had no idea about being able to run it on a Pi. I just removed mine out of the case to find it's a Raspberry Pi 2 model B. My brother is heavily into these devices. Somehow I put mine on the backburner, forgetting all about it while being consumed with iOS apps over the past year or two. So now you resparked my interest in it.

  • I don't own any of them but am constantly considering it. I'm most interested in converting a PI into a USB MIDI->DIN MIDI host/router/mapper thingy.

At risk of overloading, have a look at this: http://zynthian.org
Well, better still, go here (ignore the brochure single-page site above) https://discourse.zynthian.org

  • I own a Pi 3. Don't use it much, but I think it's brilliant. Sunvox works, and I'm looking forward to that renamed-Tracktion app.

  • I have the RasPi model B. Hooked it up recently for receiving video signals over network. Unfortunately it needs at least model B+.

Good tip about Sunvox. I will try Sunvox there if I manage to install and run the software. Other than that, I used the RasPi for media playback/streaming, a bit for pd, but that's about it. I have not much knowledge in Linux.

  • I was just checking out my. others raspberry pi yesterday. made me think about using it as the brains to a diy midi controller. I only want to have like 6 arcade style buttons, and 6 faders. however I don't want to have to run it through. secondary software on my computer, before it goes into my daw. I just want a plug n play type setup? anybody have any experience with that? or would an Arduino be better???

  • I had arduinos for years since arduinomes more or less and for custom midi controllers. I had also raspi original and 2 getting dust all around for make a usb host to midi when I have the behringer dock and iPad3 (also buyed some teensys over the journey) but finally cck3 with power appeared and I could focus on make music and left aside too much hardware project. Since I never learnt to code really well and the distro for raspi I wanted to use was a pita I only make straightforward hacking today.
    I explain myself...

https://ccrma.stanford.edu/~eberdahl/Satellite/ (it needs ssh to deal with and I never know how to do nothing)

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arduinome (First attemp until launchpad mk1 appeared and fuck all the game)

    http://s1022.photobucket.com/albums/af343/Mudisticism/Octinct/DSC_0448.jpg
http://resolume.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7029 (Later at the lab where I apply to learn a bit more we contribute in rgb project, I left it before it comes into a business which never really took off)

So nowadays I just make circuit bending and straightforward hacks like substitute sensors or rehousing things into other more ergonomic or allinone for easy transport.

  • My RPi waits for this audio/midi hat to get released http://blokas.io
I'm close to giving up on waiting in a favour of good USB audio/midi interface.

  • Nice shield! Sadly for most of looping/djing projects more io are required...

  • I made one for my wife as a birthday present so she could relive her youth by playing metroid using retro pi. I play Mike Tysons punch out... We use it for video streaming also.

I got a 3 as a media server. It has issues though, losing connection way too often. Would appreciate any advice how to set this up properly as a reliable samba server.

  • Thinking about getting one to load pure data on it and build a small percussion controller/synthesis/sample thingy.

  • I have a pi B+ , use it as a wireless USB midi router. Very slow for any audio work.

  • Ive had Arduino since Christmas and Im hoping to build midi controllers and maybe a synth. It's easier going than programming ios and a lot easier than pure electronics. Its a great middleground if you are wondering if you are a programmer or an electronics wiz. It seems Im neither so its perfect for me. Really enjoying using it

    Check C.H.I.P better.

Get a Leonardo if you want easy class compliance with iOS. Also check those:

  • I purchased one about a week ago, and it should be arriving any day now. It is a Model 3 B. I have lots of things I'd like to try to do with it!

It's probably bundled with a Raspbian card, but if you're thinking of doing anything in the desktop OS area, check out Ubuntu Mate, too. Both have advantages and disadvantages. Raspbian/PIXEL has hardware acceleration for video playback, feels faster, and is more "official", but Ubuntu Mate looks so much nicer than PIXEL.

  • Hey Dubby,

I had my eye on that one also.

    Cheers!

  • Im definitely curious about getting a Pi to run as a dedicated Super Nintendo emulator. Didnt know you could make music on them too.

Great info! Thanks! I had been wondering about the differences between the two. I use Ubuntu Mate for everything at home already, so I'm already familiar with it. Are there any other pros/cons of each?

My kid took one and built a full arcade stile console for it, using an old monitor, speakers, and some game controls he ordered a-la-carte over the internet. He's got like ten bazillion games on it. If I remember, I'll post a pic when I get home.

    That is so stinkin cool

That one seems to be pretty popular with the pi people.
(It's a bit too 'advanced' and 'nerdy' for me).

  • I'd like to get a lattepanda. It's similar but has USB3, faster processor and it can run windows 10.
