My first cover song, Jyllingevej by Kim Larsen (Danish)

edited February 2017 in Creations

This is my first upload ever. Had great fun doing this. Recorded and mixed in cubasis, recorded through Scarlett studio. Guitar tone is presets from Tonebridge and bass is ThumbJam. Please share your thoughts about it ;)

  • Hi Kim thanks for posting your song. The song has lots of rocking energy but I think you need to remix and get a better balance for the drums and vocals. I find the drums are lost behind the guitar and the vocals need a little more presence. Great effort though congratulations :)

Thanks. I see what you mean. The drums is from drumsession by @DerekBuddemeyer . But i cant seem to get them louder without clipping. Maybe turn everything else down? Oh, and Kim is the original artist. I just made a cover. ;)

Sorry about that :) Kim is a nice name though! I should have known Of Kim Larsen!
In regards to remixing perhaps someone with experience with drumsession and cubasis can give you advice. Best of luck
If you have any stand alone apps like Audio Mastering or Final touch they might be worth trying the final mastering of your song

  • I have both. Gonna try messing with it some more.

  • I dig the guitar sounds! Forgot about Tonebridge. Sounds like all the parts are there. It might be cool to start your remix with the drums and bass, get a good balance, and then bring in the vocals, then the guitars. Looking forward to the remix.

  • Thanks @supanorton. That is a great idea, will definitely try that.

  • All the best with your music Jakersjaw!

    Thank you @Arpseechord
    Another try. Better?

Edit: I accidentally uploaded the first draft without bass and edits. Changed it now.

I'll listen to your remix a little later today. It's very early in Canada still....have to get more sleep
Look forward to checking it out on my excellent headphones

Ok Jacob I gave your original mix a listen on my headphones and then I listened twice to your new remix. Overall the balance of vocals to guitar and drums is much better. If you'll allow me there are some things that could take it to the next level. I'd like to hear the drums slightly more brighter in tone, they are a little too bass compressed( not louder in volume but more spacious).Sometimes I find throughout the song the cymbals( hi-hats, ride) on the far right in the mix sound isolated from the drums at times. Your leads at 1:22 and especially near the end at 2:19 needs more presence (slightly brighter and more upfront) for contrast in the dynamics. The vocals I find sit very good throughout. The guitar sounds are awesome and your level of musianship are not in question, excellent job :)
Thanks for the opportunity to listen

  • Thank you very much! I really appreciate you taking the time to listen and give such constructive criticism. I totally agree on the tone of the drums. And the ride and cymbals is actually layered from a kit in cubasis. So it makes sense that they sound isolated. Are you meaning lead vocals needs to be brighter, or the lead guitar? And again thank you for listening and your compliments :)

Hey no problem glad to help out. Don't touch the vocals they are balanced very good. Its the lead guitar seemed a little weak especially the bigger lead you have near the end of the song. It's a little shy and needs to shine a bit more.
    Keep on rocking :)

  • Cool to hear a mix making such great progress! I will echo @Arpseechord has already mentioned. I'd like to hear the drums cut through a bit more, especially the snare. I love the rhythm guitar that comes in on the left channel right before the lead guitar breaks, nice addition. I dig the song.

Much more enjoyable. Sounds more alive and open especially the guitars are rockin'. I agree with supanorton I'd like quite a bit more bite in the snare drum
Congrats on your efforts and thanks for the chance to listen :)

  • Definitely sounds more "alive". If you used DrumSession, maybe try one of the less compressed kits. I think the compression is killing that snare.

  • Thanks @supanorton. Yes, I will try with another more dry kitt. Thanks for the suggestion.

Sounds nice! I would suggest to play the rhythm guitar part twice and then put one part a bit to the right, and other part a bit to the left. This way you will achieve a great stereo effect. You can even use different (but similar) presets for the guitar parts. Experiment! Cheers.

  • Thanks @tigermetal that's a great idea!
