Is it possible to route Garage Band output into Audiobus?
Trying to find a way to route Garage Band output into Audiobus, so I can send it to MiMix, and assign to specific output channels in a multi-channel interface.
Anyone know of a way to do this? I know you can add Garage Band as a destination, or output, of Audiobus; but then the audio from Garage Band is forced into CH1 and CH2 out.
.... I hope Garage Band eventually gets an update to work with multi-channel interfaces ...

not possible. GB only is available in AB output, not input
Is there a way to have the iPad's CH1 and CH2 outputs be routed to Audiobus' input?
I know I can select the System Audio CH1 and CH2 as input in AB, but that's the iPad's input channels. It would be a nice feature to be able to route the iPad's CH1 and CH2 outputs back into AB to be able to reassign apps that don't have AB integration from these channels.
Use an iConnectivity device to route audio outputs 1+2 into outputs 5+6, then select those as inputs in Audiobus? I'm sure it'd require more brainpower than this loose concept, but maybe possible? Probably better working with 2 devices too.
I actually have an iConnectAudio4+, and have thought about what you suggest, but I have all 6 analog outputs being used.
Now that I think about it though ... hmm ... Within the iCA4+, I could enable the USB1 mixer, and send the iPad's CH1 and CH2 to the USB mixer, then send it back to the iPad through input channels 3 & 4. Then in AB, I would hopefully see CH3 and CH4 available as an input and be able to remap them to whatever output I want in MiMix
Interesting thought ... I'll have to give this a go when I have time ...
I think you can get more outputs with a bit of tweaking, if we're on the same wavelength here. I have 1-4 as normal. 5+6, 7+8 and 9+10 are working as sends between my two devices.
Please let me know how the experiment goes. I'm interested to get a bit more in depth with my iConnectivity 4+. I've learned the ropes pretty well but reckon that real alchemy is possible with a bit of ingenuity.
Absolutely agree with you. The iConfigAudio boxes are quite an amazing piece of kit. I'm sure the real capability of them is yet to be determined; and as you said, most likely only limited by how creative and inventive you are.
iC box. Route the output of the iPad running GB into the other iPad running whatever you want - AB chain etc. The only way I can think of too that makes GB useful to my workflow.
That's a good suggestion. I thought about running Garage Band on my iPhone, and connecting it to USB2 on my iCA4+, then I can route CH1 and CH2 of the iPhone into my whatever iPad inputs I want. Although I would then need 2 devices on stage. This is for a live stage setup, so minimal is good.
I initially wanted to keep all live channels off of CH1 and CH2, due to those two channels being used for iOS default sounds and notifications. This is wy I was trying to see if there's a way to route Garage Band audio directly into AB. I know I can just mute the iPad, and use airplane mode, etc ... But would prefer not to take the chance of something binging in at the wrong time over the mains. Garage Band really should get multi-channel audio in this new word of IAA apps.
I also have another app (PRIME, which isn't AB compatible) which isn't playing nice with multichannel, and is forcing me to use CH1 for in ear click sounds on particular songs/tracks. This is another reason I was trying to remap Garage Band to different channels. Although if I can get the PRIME issue worked out, this conflict goes away and I could use Garage Band on CH1 and CH2 (still having the "accidental iOS sound during live performance" risk though)
I tested it today, and it works just as expected. In the iConfig patchbay, I connected CH1 and CH2 of USB1 Source (where the iPad is plugged in) to USB1 Destination CH3 and CH4.
Then in Audiobus, I setup a chain with input set to "System Audio 3 & 4" and output as MiMix. Then in the MiMix strip, I sent the output to CH3 and CH4.
So now when I play Garage band, the audio is routing out of the iPad CH1 and CH2, into iConfig, then back into the iPad through inputs 3 & 4, into AudioBus, through MiMix, and back out of the iPad's outputs 3 & 4.
Pretty slick setup, and would allow for Garage Band output signal to integrate into AB for further tweaking through other AB compatible apps.
Excellent!
I'd guess that other apps would also come back in along with GarageBand. I'm sure it could be remedied with some thoughtful routing though.
That's the challenge. Anything running out of CH1 and CH2 will come back in, including iOS system sounds/notifications. I suppose if the app has the ability to pan the output, you could do this with 2 apps. Pan Garage Band to the Left Channel (ie: CH1) and some other app to the Right Channel (ie: CH2), the you could setup two mono chains in AB for the 2 apps and send to two different strips in MiMix.
Or, if you have a multichannel capable app that just isn't AB compatible, this is an easy way to route the signal in. Ex: I have a multitrack playback app, that allows me to select which audio channel to output each track within a song on. So I could choose iPad outs 5, 6, 7, 8 in this app .... then loop those channels back in VIA the iCA4+ to whatever iPad input channels I want, and setup AB to pull each system audio channel into a separate chain.
^^^^ It's easier if you use two iPads
I suppose it's a matter of perspective. Having another iPad integrated into my setup wouldn't be an easy thing to accomplish since it's a guitar pedal board, built for stage setup, and is pretty compact for transport.
Looping it back in iConfig was pretty easy though!
Cool.
Sweet guitar. PRS? I still like my strat I've had for 20 years - but if I were to ever get a different one I'd be interested in something like that.
Thanks. Ya, it's a 2004 PRS Hollowbody II 10-top, with the piezo option. Definitely a sweet guitar. I've played a 1978 Gibson Les Paul 25/50 for many years, and it's a really sweet guitar too, but really heavy. Picked this one up in Oct, and it's been great! I did swap the pickups for something a little fuller and hotter than what came in it. My back is thanking me for the weight reduction! It's a little over 5lbs
Any news on this? Still no option to route GB to AB (or even AUM)?
