Elastic Drums is totally sweet... Any tips on using song mode?

Just started getting into using Elastic Drums, after having it on my "to do" list for a while now, and am very excited about what this app is capable of. I could start a whole other topic just on that, however, I'm mainly looking for any tips people might have on it's song mode.

You get up to 16 steps per pattern, and four patterns per song section. My main stumbling block is, in short, how to proceed: Copy and paste, then do a variation with the pasted pattern? Do automation per pattern, or do automation last when the song is done?

Yeah, I realize there are no rules, and any approach can be considered the right one. Just looking for ideas to perhaps light a spark and get things going.

  • The one one tip I can offer, is to get a good sound first, before writing a bunch of patterns, because the sequencer, for better or worse, has the sound change from part to part (measure to measure).

Say you get a bunch of patterns written, then decide to change the sound of some of the drums, you would have to go through and change the sound for each pattern.

It makes it easy to get fast variations, but there isn't an easy way to just change the sound of a drum, globally.

That's good to know, thanks for that. I usually work that way anyways: create patches first. Still good to know.

  • On the iPhone version, if you map velocity to pitch, it's impossible to delete individual notes it seems. Cause you go to tap them and instead of deleting it just changes the velocity. Is there a way around this or does the iPhone version just suck?

Ah yes, this is a very good point and I've learned the hard way on this!

Same. Even if you haven't committed to going 'full song' but have just strung together 2-4 patterns to make a longer rhythm loop, it can be a right pain to adjust a single drum sound. Honorable @magnum38, could we get 'Copy sound to all patterns' a spot on the 'maybe one day' list?

    Pretty please?

Being able to selectively chain patterns while working on them would be great. Right now I just reserve the first four patterns for 'active editing' and just copy patterns into there when I want to work on them. It works well enough but it would be great to toggle 'active patterns' when in song mode.

Also, yes, it is a super awesome app. Now that the sampler is here... fantastic! Beautiful friend for Blocs.

  • Select the Instrument you want (1-6) on the Instr screen . Tap "Option" then Tap "Copy seq+instr" - Now Select Another Instrument Track (From any Pattern, including Different Presets), Tap "Option" again, you'll notice Copy seq+instr is Grayed out. Long Tap it, Release, and your Sequence Will be copied over. Copying to a muted Slot, or a few inactive Pattern Slots can Preserve/Make Available your favorite stuff. You can copy/paste to/from Inactive Patterns as well - so you won't be toggling sounds on and off etc.

  • Tip # 2 - follow the same Process as my last post - this time, add some automation to the Sequence... Now, Copy over the Sequence to a new Slot - delete the Notes - The Automation Remains... So can use this to Preserve your favorite Automations etc....

  • I'm finding a lot of the presets to have nice examples of songs.

Also, the awesomeness of this app cannot be understated, especially with the IAP sample import.
