iPad For Music Production
Just a simple question: I already have the iPad Air 1 and it really helped me take my music production to the next level and apps like Bloc Waves makes it so much fun whenever I reach that dredded writer's block. I'm thinking about just getting the iPad Air 2, does it matter, or should I get the iPad Pro or iPad Pro 12.9? I don't know which model right now.

I have air 2 and would really really like to upgrade to the bigger pro(i would like bigger screen and more horse power). I dont know how big of an upgrade air 2 is to 1(or how much power your work flow needs), so dunno if it would be worth it.
IMO if you're going to spend, go for the newest and most powerful you can possibly afford. Whether you need the power or not isn't as important as the longevity. Each iOS upgrade seems to either bog down older hardware more, or drop support for older hardware.
The other thing is: don't buy until you really need to, for as sure as hell, as soon as you buy, something newer is going to come out.
I would advise the pro 12' also. Bigger screen, more RAM(even compare to pro 9,7), more CPU(same as pro 9,7), and as wim said about longevity.(same as 9.7)
So if it's really too expensive, go for the pro 9,7.
Also, something to consider; what would be your use of this one ?...How many apps max are you planning to use at once ? Do you need a looper with recording voices? (that require an ultra low latency, so highest CPU)
DO you plan to use it live, during 2 hours, or just for 10 min gigs ?...
Oh yea and since air1 is more than capable for most of the stuff, if you dont feel really limited by it, im pretty sure there are some new pro ipads coming somewhere this year(maybe fall or late summer?)
I have the 12.9 pro and it's really easy to stick in a backpack. Very slim and portable.. as was styed above, go for the best one you can afford. The 4gig RAM will come in handy
Just upgraded from air 2 to Pro 12.9, really satisfied. It's a much more laptop type experience but wrapped up in iOS. If your thinking of waiting for the next gen, I would say that Bluetooth doesn't play well with music production too much lag!
Are there rumors that the next gen will reduce that lag?
Couple of things with this. iOS will not send audio to a bluetooth device, if the app doing the sending is capable of recording. I have seen various explanations over the years, but if your intent is to mix over bluetooth speakers or headphones, it doesn't work. Second, bluetooh uses lossy compression, so if you want to use it for mixing, it's not a great idea, as you are dropping fidelity.
For just playing back completed works, I have never noticed any lag. I don't know about playing live.
Aptx is the only low latency codec that would be useable and apple doesn't support it hence they've developed something proprietary for air pods.
Playing live etc doesn't work well noticeable lag
I'm still happily on Air1. Depending on how Beatmaker 3 and the new Gadgets perform, I may wait another year to upgrade to a Pro.
Hopefully the new iPad Pro will have the new upgraded Bluetooth built in
Apollo is doing quite well the job to connect 2 ipads already.

I find the big pro a bit awkward to use apart from on a table so kind of wish I had bought the smaller one sometimes, but other times I'm glad of the bigger screen Ho hum...
It's the big Pro for me![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
