Dance lessons and Tap Tempo...

Hello everyone from a new user …I hope to post on the right section, tell me if I'm doing some error. :-)
I would like to know what are in your opinion the best apps with the Tap Tempo function.
I work playing for dance classes and I wanted to try to replace the MacBook and controller (and maybe the grand piano too :-) ) with something more portable, as my iPhone or iPad...so I need to have something that could replace good the working environment I use (mainly Ableton Live, where I can have some parts recorded and some other to be played live).
In dance classes it's essential to catch the exercise time decided by the teacher, so the main problem I had was to have the Tap Tempo function…I downloaded Launchpad (there is the Tap Tempo, but is on another page so is a little difficult when you need to be quick) and Beatmaker (that does not have Tap Tempo). So before I download other apps would be great to know what have Tap Tempo function, and what is better in your opinion.
Any other advice on apps to use in dance lessons is welcome, of course. :-)
Thanks in advance

  • It depends on your needs... could you explain a bit more the whole workflow?

  • In the beginning I was playing for the lessons just with the piano…then I started to introduce electronic ... first with a few patches of Max / MSP that I used to improvise together with the piano...now I use Live controlled by Push ... Live is perfect for this kind of work because it allows me to have both pre-recorded clips and the ability to play in real time.
I play for Contemporary Dance, and the work of the musician is not the same as for Ballet classes…there are of course some prefixed exercises, but the way they are made can change day by day…so is important to have the possibility to react on-the-fly to the differences of the day.
A typical workflow would be: the teacher explain the exercise, then set the tempo (the famous “three-and-four-and” :-), or something like that)…I tap on Push as he counts to set the right BPM…so I start a clip with, let say, some percussion part or maybe a long note pad…then Im going to record and looping on the fly some other parts while I play the piano... or maybe just play in real time on the Push some hit, or percussion, or noise and FX…then I should tweak or manipulate with some FX the recorded parts. Sometimes it is expected to have an abrupt BPM tempo change while the exercise goes on.

    So we have:

    • Piano for lessons and improvisation.
    • Push for clip launching and music improvisation (beats and melody I supose)
    • Live looping creation build from scratch.
    • Fx tweaking over "all" involved parts (not just main)
    • Accurate control of bpm with abrupt changes.

Well my bet will be mainly novation hard/soft with some extra apps.

    • Novation Launchkey (or launchcontrol xl if you want to keep the piano in the classroom)
    • Korg Module or Sampletank (you can skip them if you don't need extra sonic palette aside the piano)
    • Launchpad hardware/app (if you gou the launchkey/launchcontrol xl route you could avoid the hardware side) for clip trigger/launch since Push seems not work with iPad (maybe I'm wrong, not full sure about it)
    • LoopyHD (good for abrupt bpm changes) or GTL (it depends on how you wonder build the structure for the improvisation). Also Quantiloop could fit in this even better for the fx part...
    • AudioBus (3?) or AUM for apply some fx over the parts/main (livefx, turnado...)

The straightforward/cheap could be launchcontrol xl and some apps... ;)
I forgot some parts like isomorphic keyboards and so but I will very glad to see anyone opinion and learn by the way ;)
