Any apps that behave like Beatstep?
Been watching some videos of BSP performances with hardware, and I wondered if there's any software out there that would allow me to very quickly program rhythm and melodic sequences, change patterns quickly and trigger my racks in Reason over MIDI? I'd really like to get away from just sequencing on my screen and start doing more live/spontaneous stuff using my iPad to control software and hardware synths.
For anyone unfamiliar, BSP is two monophonic melodic sequencers and one 10 channel (I think) drum pattern sequencer, with 16 scenes available for each as well as channel muting, fills, randomisation, etc.

Also just realised that Modstep is probably quite close to this but it's kind of intimidating to me, atm at least! Looking for something with more of a hardware paradigm![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
Damn, triple post. So Modstep just clicked for the first time since I tried it. So I guess I just answered my own question haha
MidiSequencer offers a hardware fader based sequencing experience of a single track with chords & midifx & can go very deep ( including NRPN /SYSex for tricky hardware) .
It also offer StepRecord & some External midi control so you can control with hardware .
A 64step x 4playhead x 6 ( T )Rack super duper version is in betatesting & will be worth the short wait .
I write as a biased betatester .
I am also a biased longterm beta tester for Kirnu Cream arpeggiator ,
which offers 4Tracks( with IAP) of deeply programmable polyphonic arpeggiation .
Input notes can be played Live , or there is a Chord Memory function , so it can be used as an arpeggiator or made to behave like a sequencer .
Another excellent programmable arp which can be used for sequencing is StepPolyArp .
I recommend all the above as great Touch interfaces , with Pattern switching , which when placed in front of the computer monitor give a creative hands on feeling to creating , experimenting with midi sequences at the input stage of a DAW .
For capability I should also mention Thesys single track sequencer , but its gui is a lot smaller & more fiddly .
For drums Patterning's circular design & pretty comprehensive programmabilty is a great touchscreen experience in front of a computer , & it sends midi out ..hence me recommending it
iSpark is an excellent ios drum machine but NO midiout , so no good for your purpose here.
Ps. I think you are right to be wary of ModStep for your stated purpose .
Not only is it not the most immediate or intuitive design per se , but as its main purpose is as a Clip Sequencer , its "inner sequencing" capabilities are less deep & less playable than the more hands on apps I recommended above .
I'm talking about play directions/modes , ratcheting , randomization , probability , discrete sequencing , individual step swing, shift , transpose etc , all presented in an immediately playable format .
Yeah I mean, I've literally made more progress with Modstep in the last half hour than I have in the days I've spent (cumulatively) in the past. It's undeniably good but the interface is a little cryptic. At least it's got a help system! But yeah there is a lot of page switching and stuff. It'll take me a while to get comfortable with it. I'll definitely check out those others you mentioned though! Thank you![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
Related side note; anyone know why playback speed isn't doing anything in Modstep?
As with so much of ModStep's inscrutabily , it's because so much of the control is Gesture based , including the order of commands , so IIRC you have to choose the speed , then touch the clip ? , if not its the opposite ..!
Thanks man, got it! Wasn't immediately obvious. If I could mute individual pads in a pattern this might just fit the bill ya know. It's definitely better than I remember it being. I can't wait to hook it up to my Volcas!
You may also want to check out midiSteps.
The truth, stated perfectly.
B-Step 2 is worth looking at. Goes pretty deep with some unique features.
Wish it had link though.
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/b-step-sequencer-2-pro/id854779961?mt=8
Also has a lite (free) version,
Good 'un. B-step is pretty great.
There's also xynthesizer. You can split the octaves to point them at different MIDI outputs and transpose the sequence(s) in real time.
Infinite Looper maybe...
Or even Patterning
@Wally it seems Thesys can only respond to midi channel 1, so if you want to send a program change, to load a preset, it must be thru channel 1. Is that true ? Thanks![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
@crony I dont know Thesys that well , ( havent got the eyesight for it ) ,but I know there's a Midi setting including Select Channel number per port by clicking on arrow .
Have you set that up ?, unless Program Change using MIDI bank is different again, I'd always assumed channel select was global for all functions , but I've never used that deeply I'm afraid .
@crony FWIW I've just tried sending Program Changes via Virtual midi & hardware , set channels & Omni , to no effect . Manual unhelpful if there is a specific setting or switch , but FYI I cant get it to work either .
Any Thesys experts got Program Change working ?
@wally I don't have this app...It's a "real user feedback ask before, maybe, buy" demand![;) ;)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/wink.png)
So, as I understand, the input midi channel here allows you to set which midi controller will interact with Thesys itself.
So it should receive PC from that midi channel.
What controller do you use to send the PC ?
Can you trace the signal to make what's sended ?
Then, Thesys will play is pattern, and send it to an external synth, and this is at this point, that it seems, by default, Thesys is sending ONLY to channel 1.![:dizzy: :dizzy:](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/dizzy.png)
That means you must have your external gear set on channel 1.
Which, if I'm not wrong, is just a shame.
So yeah I've invested a little time into Modstep and it appears to be the closest to what I want although the sequencer isn't quite as snappy as I'd like (long press to delete, no pad mute, no arpeggiator). But certainly for what I wanna do with it it should be alright!
you should grab steppolyarp. its one of the best midi appregiators i have used. since both modstep and steppolyarp have link they work together amazingly well. just draw chords in modstep=>send to step poly arp=>modstep.
you can even record both unappregiated and appregiated midi this way. as seen in this super unproffesional video shot by me:-![](https://img.youtube.com/vi/qiCxFk-G_Sg/0.jpg)
Also. thumbjam has 4 simple appregiators that also link. Yes. i know kirnu is good as well but since it doesnt have link it sometimes goes out of sync in terms of where a phrase begins. in a live jam setting its better to stick to thumbjam and steppolyarp. i think 5 appregiators is decent enough don't you ?
Loving Troublemaker's Seq. Will be a blast when/if scale lock is implemented..
