Great thread guys!
Wish I had the time to attempt a DIY midi controller.
Sounds addictive for sure.
Hi, I'm creator of OpenDeck - thanks for mentioning it.
If OpenDeck board is expensive for some, keep in mind that OpenDeck software can run on Arduino boards - I've added support for Uno, Mega, Leonardo and Pro Micro. OpenDeck can be loaded on those boards which turns them into class-compliant USB MIDI devices. They can also be configured using web interface. I'm selling Arduino boards pre-loaded with OpenDeck software, or you can buy just compiled firmware from me and load it yourself. Another option is downloading the source code and compiling and uploading it yourself - this is free.

Wow this is cool. So all I would have to do is purchase an Open deck loaded board, and plugin my pots or switches. And use a web interface to setup? is there any coding needed? or is it simply selecting the number of control inputs and types, and sending that info to the board? if so.... awesome!
Yes!
No!
Connect buttons, connect pots, connect whatever, configure in interface, go! No coding, no soldering, no messing with electronics.
fantastic! i know where some of my next paycheck is going. thanks
Amazing as usual! Glad to see you here, mate!
For the OP don’t forget to check my (now old) post about diy midi controller.
Opendeck is the perfect platform for it since you can skip coding
