One of the 'problems' I see with Link in iOS 'audio based' daws is the 'requirement' for real-time time-stretch of audio which is still quite CPU hungry.
Would we accept 'snaps'n'crackle' on 20+ audio-tracks when changing the tempo??
This is partly why it may also be tricky to implement a 'tempo-track' since recorded audio would need to be stretched in real-time with the tempo-changes.
Sure we have a load of 'beatboxes' with Link support but none of them (that are publicly out, betas excluded) can 'stretch' the samples making them next to useless for tempo-based sounds.(Rex-Style 'slice-triggering' is not real time-stretching, the slices are just either cut off or played back in reverse if they end before the next slice should be triggered).
But I'm pretty sure we'll see something within a month or two.
I trust @LFS and his team knows what they are doing regarding Cubasis.
Personally I'd love to see the Cubase 'Sampler Track' make it's way to Cubasis...
I think recording is the hardest part. If you imagine trying to record onto a reel to reel while someone slows the tape by varying amounts at varying times....and then play it back at varying speeds and expect it to sound correct.
That is what a DAW will be expected to do with Link support, or indeed with any external tempo control.
Link itself is not the issue, it is the recording at a variable speed that is the main challenge. This is Why MIDI Clock in Cubasis is output only, and why tempo tracks are not implemented. When the speed is controlled by a tempo track the problem is not AS great as you can predict what speed you need to record at. When the tempo is controlled externally you have no info other than the current tempo, which by the time you've worked it out may have changed.
These are not DAW's however. So far I can find no DAW on iOS with LINK. Well not sure about modstep? Does it handle audio?
AUM is the closest thing to a DAW that supports Link.
To me Modstep is a proper DAW...Even further...Well, live oriented I would say...
Combined with AUM it's just a blast, to me...
It has a good sampler included, which now works fine...
Gadget missing audio, true, but, as very nice synths and user friendly midi editing.
I personaly finalise my tracks with Cubasis, but all is predone with AUM+Modstep, and some magic effects...![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
Loopy does some time-stretching, AUM only slows down or speeds up the playback of the audio-files.
Also an app I'm testing allows the user to enable 'stretch' for audio-tracks and it has Link support too...
B to the M to the 3 FTW!
How about increase in MIDI PPQ resolution?
Both Launchpad and blocs do audio stretching with link....neither is a DAW though.
Modstep does not have audio tracks but does have a sampler.
The closest we have come to a DAW like environment with Link is Gadget....when v3.0 with the audio gadgets does finally arrive....but we currently have no idea how it will work or how well it will work.
And Reason.
Only BM2, of the list above, (Genome, Gadget, Modstep) its the only actual (audio tracks etc) iOS DAW with Link so far. The sweet, ultra-stable, nearly forgotten $10 BM2.
BM2 has had Link since 12/13/16
Meanwhile, go team Steinberg. Cubby is so cool.
Knowing it's controversial to call it a daw, but NI Maschine has Link too. F***ing nice.
I have been in exchange with Ableton regarding the SDK once link has been announced.
Since Cubasis is driven by a super small team, we always have to find a good balance in regards to update scopes.
We're aware that Link support would make a great Cubasis addition, but it comes at high costs engineering-wise and collides with existing roadmap plans at this moment. Nevertheless it is included in our backlog.
Best,
Lars
