I've only had Modstep since the holiday sales. I avoided it for a long time because I thought the learning curve would be too steep based on many of the threads.

I have not mastered this app yet, not even close. But, I have found the app interface intuitive enough that I have yet to even watch a single tutorial. Yet, I'm getting all kinds of great use out of it already.

Actually, I've only just now had to refer to the manual for something I couldn't figure out on my own, and it was clear within minutes.

I'm not a "musician" nor a power user driving a bunch of higher end hardware, but for my use of controlling iOS synths and effects, I've been pleasantly surprised at just how freakin useful Modstep is, even for a novice like myself. Though, I too (like @JohnnyGoodyear) would very much welcome a good tutorial so that I can build on a solid foundation. Modstep is clearly a powerful composition tool that I'd like to invest more time in getting to know better.

My own initial experience with the AUs was stable enough, but noticeably flaky. This latest build seems rock solid in comparison.

The only hurdle I'm currently trying to get over, is how to use the DM2 templates to actually control DM2 loaded within Modstep. I've tried a half dozen times since I bought the app and have failed every time. Confident it's 100% new user ignorance though.

You would like to play the drum part in the Modstep piano roll and have those excellent DM2 sounds emerge, yes? Me too.
Although the 35 new sample kits are definitely intriguing.

  • I really like that MS remembers Sensual Sax's settings now especially for the Luv knob :o o:)

  • Pretty much echoing @skiphunt and @wim. I admire ambition and I hope this update has stablised the build enough to move forward with more features.

I'm guilty of under-using this, should dig in more.

  • @skiphunt Have to say that as a n00b I have found Mister Haq's series starting here

to be a good mist diffuser. I imagine you are already off from the playground and out into the more advanced weeds, but for other beginners like myself they're certainly useful.

  • Agree!

Thanks! Yes, I'd mostly got all of that already... but I hadn't thought of simply checking the Modstep YT page. Just subscribed. thx! :)

  • She'll break my heart, but I'll keep coming back - stability? Nah... Autosave off, yeah - live in the moment! Undo? Nah... never look back!

Aum is better for recording since it perfectly slices stuff when link is on into bars

    beg your pardon?

It starts and stops recording in time with link. so lets saw you click stop recording at 3.3 bars. it will actually stop recording after completing the 4th bar making it a perfect 4 bar loop. this makes it really good for recording loops you can directly dump into ableton or blocs.

    I never ever noticed this.
So just when you've got, say, an Elastic Drums loop going, and your noodling along with TC-11...you push record and it starts on the 1, and then you push pause later...and it finishes whatever bar it's on? WOW.

    Yup :)

  • I'm only a year late with finally saddling Modstep up, but this is really very good. Thank you Korg for getting delayed on your own special freeway or I would never have gotten into the thing...

Once you can see into its eyes, it really is a beautiful thing :)

  • Really curious to see if AB3 reduces the process of re-connecting everything every time you open MS.

I think you're right. I will never leverage every last technical trick out of it (or anything), but having figured it out enough to run three or four apps it feels the easiest way to play folks from different families in one place in a way that is more fluid/creative than I do in a DAW...and I like the noise I can make in it. The rest of it is down to me which is all I'm ever really asking for...

That's it exactly. I have taken lately to running stuff in AUM to play with sounds and sketch out riffs. I come away with three or four nice stems that I can work on later. But I think with Modstep I'm just a slight angle away from preserving these sessions in midi. That would be fantastically helpful....

Agree. At this point I'm of a mind that if they keep working it and I keep learning it this may be my primary creative clubhouse...

Yes, this would be a huge bonus... and would contribute nicely toward the "primary creative clubhouse" that J Goodyear speaks of.

  • Hey guys, seems like it´s mainly working out for you, good to hear! Just wanted to share some thoughts on Ableton Live Export, since this pops up here sometimes:

@ecamburn: We decided against supporting AbletonLive export for now since we already have the possibility to export audio and midi files. Warping is cool, but unfortunately the Ableton Export SDK only supports the bare minimum of MIDI (from the Documentation: "Live does not represent MIDI clips as actual MIDI files, and furthermore, this library does not expose all MIDI features which Live supports. Specifically, it only supports MIDI note on and note off messages (with velocity).” This might and hopefully will change.
So by using MIDI file and audio export from Modstep you might not get Clips with Warp Markers prepared, but you get audio tracks cut at the start and the end with their BPM in their name and MIDI files that contain all the CCs and modulation that would be lost when using Ableton Live export.

@Processaurus: Yes this bug was fixed!

Regarding undo: we hope you guys can live with Autosave as it is for now, we will definitely include it in the bigger update.

Great, thanks for fixing that, and the continued development!

Can I pose a question to the Modstep Hivemind?

I have a great pattern in StepPolyArp and a good accompaniment in Patterning.

What's the best way to build on this using Modstep?
EDIT: This is too particular for this topic. Will post outside. Sorry.
