Glitchy Gadget?

Nothing to do with the 3.0 release.

What's happening is, when I start fine-tuning the levels and effects in a project after I've worked on it for a while, it will start glitching out about midway through playback.

Current project uses 12 tracks, each with 1-3 IFX, 13 scenes (8 bar each), no automation. So not minimal or sparse by any means, but not overly complicated either. Oh, and no imported samples.

Air 1, latest ios. I don't run anything else while I'm using gadget, and I put the iPad on airplane mode.

Rebooting doesn't seem to help. I think "corrupted file", but that doesn't seem possible. And if I export the stereo master into something else, it sounds fine - it's just glitchy when I play it back in gadget, which makes editing all but impossible.

This happen to anyone else? Any suggestions?

  • Could be the CPU throttling due to it getting hot.

Thx. Anything I can do to address this?

    Freeze some tracks?
or work outside on a cold day.

freeze tracks that you are not working on, these will use less cpu.

We don't really have those where I live ;)

But I can certainly let the iPad literally cool off for awhile before trying to force the issue, which is what I was doing. Really appreciate the tip! May have been obvious to y'all, but it wasn't to me.

Ya know, I tried freezing all of the tracks, but got the same glitchiness. Now, if it was a heat issue, that may be why. Gonna try the "cooling off" approach tonite.

If you freeze earlier then the CPU will not get as hot in the first place ;) It would be nice to have a Freeze All option that you could use when you know you are just going to playback and not do any edits.

  • One more thing you could try is increasing the audio latency in the settings.

I'm happy to try that, but I don't know what that means or how to do it. (You are dealing with a very unsophisticated clod over here, if you hadn't already figured that out). What am I looking for with that?

  • I ran into a glitch where the last scene in the list steadfastly refused to be shifted elsewhere. Goddamn did that have me fuming. Worked around it by shifting previous scenes below it and once it was no longer in the bottom position, it behaved.

This is a good point actually, if you are editing notes in the grid and not really playing them live then set the latency to the highest possible value.....
    Open Gadget
    Open Settings
    Select More Settings
And then Audio latency is the 3rd setting in the list..after the Notifications and Background refresh.

What this controls is how far ahead of playing the software can render the audio....the bigger the number the more time it has but the more 'sluggish' the keyboards will feel....if you are programming on the grid it will make no difference to you and go for the highest number.

Be aware though that if you are opening gadget inside AUM or Audiobus...then changing the Gadget settings will make no difference..you will need to change them in either AUM or AB.

Tap the cog in the top right of the screen and select Other Settings - Open. Try changing the audio latency to 2048. I think the default is 1024.

  • I've had this happen to me too. From memory, renaming the track / closing Gadget / re-booting / opening the re-named track sorted things out.

Yeah..i have seen this happen too. And even though you know it isn't gonna move, you still keep trying....MOOOVVVEEE DAAAAAMNNNNN YOOUUUU LOL

  • Maybe this helps (a bit..):

    • reduce display brightness. Reduce it in an extremical manner.
    • set off wi-fi and bluetooth (and mobile internet in case your iPad Air 1 has a SIM-Card slot)
    • disable location services (but not for system services), and do all the walk of this here:
      www.apple.com/batteries/maximizing-performance/
      ->do it completely! Everything.
    • Upgrade iOS to 10.2.1. in case your version is a bit older
    • in case issue persists: consider re-installing your iPad

(first step: Backup in iCloud, second step: then let your iPad air go to recovery mode and follow this route: https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT201263 - third step: Do the second step a second time - forth step: setup your iPad Air1 from iCloud)

    I hope this helps.

  • Well, figured all day was enough time for the thing to cool off, so I fired it up and- glitch city. Per @Igneous1 I tried renaming/rebooting- thought I was good, but then right back to glitchville before too long.

Froze a mere two of my twelve tracks, and it's working like a charm!

@AndyPlankton, if you're ever anywhere near Dallas, ping me and I'll buy you a beer. In the meantime, my sincere thanks will have to do.

  • Gadget has another glitch in that there are timing issues when Link is enabled. String together some closed hi hats and see what I mean.

    Anyone else experiencing this?

Turn Link off and all is fine

I'm in the UK so it will have to be a virtual beer :), and you're welcome :)
