ROLI Lightpad Block with PPG WaveMapper
I got a ROLI Lightpad Block a week ago. I wanted to try it as a cheap MPE controller, and even without the control software it is working great. On the IPad I have been using it with the PPG apps which support voice per channel which is very cool because I have been making patches in WaveMapper that respond to ROLI slide, strike, press, and glide. Not found a way to do lift yet. But still very powerful since in the PPG apps almost every parameter can me modulated by one of those sources through CV, CX, CY, velocity, after touch and mod and pitch wheel.
I have also used it successfully on my laptop as a controller. Very cool with Softube Modular.
Anyone else out there using this outside the Noise app?

I am but haven't gotten into actually assigning parameters for the axis. Can you briefly say how you go about assigning them to the block? I assume you are using the block in VpC keyboard mode in wavemapper?
PItch Bend Range to 24.
MIDI mode to VpC.
CV, CY and CX are automatically mapped correctly.
CV is internally set to note velocity.
CYis internally set to CC 1
CX is internally set to channel aftertouch.
SO actually the only thing you have to do is set the pitch bend Range.
The great thing is, this is modulating individually per channel, so it is true MPE control.
Fantastic! That is good news! Thanks for the info.
I'm considering getting the Lightpad Blocks but was confused over whether you have to use them with the additional Live and Loop blocks or if they're just optional extras to trigger the looping and recording/live triggering of loops without touching the iPad.
I've seen a few videos of the blocks controlling Ableton too and as you've mentioned here. It is essentially a midi controller (albeit MPE assignable) and so should be able to be used as such with any DAW.
The prospect of getting a few of these as a cheaper alternative to a Linnstrument is very tempting.
Lightpad can be used alone. And any DAW with midi filters or transforms will work. I find it very playable and expressive. I have used it with the PPG apps, Softube Modular which has a ROLI module, SynthMaster 2 and One which support CC 74 to 1 mapping, Diva, Pro One, and the built in Logic Synths which support MPE. Some have complained about the sensitivity of the surface but a simple velocity mapper can adjust that. ROLI is supposed to come out with control software for the desktop soon.
It also works well in Animoog and Model 15.
It's a shame you can't edit the sounds or import your own samples into the Noise app, maybe that's something Roli will add in the future.
I think I'll see if I can have a go of one. I know when I had a go of the Seaboard Rise that it felt very strange, like trying to wade through treacle a little bit. I didn't like the very rubbery feel the keys had but perhaps there's a knack to playing it and maybe the shop display model had suffered from a lot of use.
I don't know if the Lightpads have a similar feel to the Rise?
they are stiffer and not so rubbery. kinda teflony. I like the feel. more resistance but still malleable and pushable. Yeh, the RISE at times feels like loose leg skin but I've gotten used to it.
