Yes, well it does improve with repeated attempts with it, but that's partly because all the early trials I did with it were just terrible: the drums would come in at least 50% faster than the tempo I was actually playing at. That does seem to settle down after some time and the tempo matching works better.

They claim it's like playing with a session drummer. I think it's like playing with a session drummer who has no feel, or who just happens to be Animal from the Muppets.

I recorded a demo so you can hear for yourself, I play the guitar while AI drum analyses the strumming, and then it crashes in, and plays lots of fills that don't go with what I'm doing:

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/rqz2bj8sdbiw9p1/X Drummer.m4a?dl=0

Compare this with Music Memos, which plays with a much lighter touch:

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/irktfr0o0mr3ch0/Music memos.m4a?dl=0

Maybe PG customers just like to rock out, but it's supposed to be able to figure out what genre you are playing. I tried lots of different things, none of which I would describe as "rock" and everytime I got.... rock.

Obviously their AI isn't a patch on Apple's, which isn't surprising, but it makes you wonder why they bothered.

Then again maybe it will get better, this is v 1.0. Maybe I will understand it better if there is more info about it. Maybe it will learn that I don't always just want to rock. Who knows.

You stopped playing the riff when the drums hit in and then started playing the riff from start again at the 2nd beat of drums, thats why it put fills in weird places.

Couldn't help it - the drums coming in broke my flow... They don't come in on time as far as I can tell.

The style is a bit like one of the drummers in a band I'm in has - his drumming is very intuitive and he puts in lots of fills in less obvious places, a bit like Ringo used to do. Thing is I really like it, as a bassist it makes it really interesting for me to play along to, though I can see for more straight styles it could be a bit confusing.

    .

I actually quite like that, it's busy drumming, but more Ringo than Animal.

  • I tested this app over the past few months and made a few suggestions along with others, all of which seem to have been ignored. Strange because PG released a free AI drum app that isn't a whole lot different than this one. I'm shocked they released this as the person who was replying to suggestions during the past few betas was extremely responsive and excited about the possibilities. Weird.

Can you give us any pointers on how to better use the app?

  • I would hope it has been drastically improved since being in beta. I'll be sticking with Drum Session.

I wish I could. I'm shocked that it's been released.

  • Great stuff, @richardyot ! Thanks for the review and "Animal from The Muppets" joke that cracked me up. Seems disappointing but I will monitor for future improvements. PG is such a frustrating combination of awesome stuff and overpromised/underfulfilled.

Ya, something doesn't seem quite right about this. When I was beta testing it....... It felt like it was being overseen by a completely different "branch" of PG. I think they do have offices/or whatever in other areas of the world besides the US. I want to say this was being overseen by their Japan division??

As has been said before, it seems like PG are branching out into so many different areas/products/apps, that it is proving difficult for them to keep up /maintain everything? I'm thankful that Bias FX still works a breeze for me and sounds as great as ever.........

Sounds like a drummer on a session alright.

Except it isn't a session of the musical variety.

  • Ok , If I have other Drumapps, I need this then?
you're happy with the app, after a longer test?

Definitely if your looking for a drunk drummer substitute for some reason or other.

That was my experience beta testing their mastering program. to put it one way, they are a curious company.

  • I still stand by Bias FX and Amp as two of the best apps I have. I don't think this Drum one holds a candle to these two. Now Drum session on the other hand.................

  • Yup, I love jam up pro Xt. But this Drummer thing , just not buying from on anything I have heard so far.

  • Well now X Drummer has Audiobus support.

Kinda, you can put it in the input slot

  • The question then becomes, "why would you"?

I'd think the best places for this app vis a vis Audiobus are the MIDI input and output slots and the AUDIO input slot.

  • I'd like to be able to use it like the drummer in GarageBand essentially so effect slot would be best maybe?
Or just be able to paste a loop in

  • It works in GarageBand with audiobus. Just tried it out. Also works iaa with bias fx but not with jamup, which is a drag.

No and no. They left the app half way done imho and isnt worth more than 99cents as is. Sucks because i had high expectations about this, and then they released this useless app..

I hope they make this great again, but i kinda doubt it

Reporter: "Is Ringo the best drummer in the world."

Lennon: "He's not even the best drummer in the Beatles."

The thread reminded me of this, and that Ringo had son Zak learn drums from Keith Moon.

Agreed, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt for now though. The potential with this, especially with cloud-based add-ins is pretty good. I, too hope they really flesh this out...
