How To Make Music Like This? Non-iPad/Audiobus Related

Hi everyone. I've been watching this live performance of Patten doing a DJ set at the Boiler Room: and wondered if someone could tell me what/how he's doing what he's doing?

It looks like he's using an Akai MPD 32 with Ableton and is launching clips of various parts of songs and trigger samples from the pads. It looks like each slider is used to control a different track and he is mixing them and cueing them via the sliders and has one of the knobs set as the filter.

I really love how he is mixing a broad range of styles and has me thinking of doing something similar with my huge CD collection and my own music. I really like his chaotic/dreamy style and how he has some tracks mixed that sound like they're different tempos as well as genres and like they clash but in a good way.

If anyone could give me some advice how to achieve a similar feat, that would be great.

  • what you see there is a person making good use of abletons samplign ablities. a good place to start is this:-

    Also:-

  • So presumably he's already prepared the set before performing it and got all his samples ready to go.

I'll have a look into it.

the 2nd video actually has a link to an already prepared liveset template that you can midimap to your own controllers and fill with your own stuff. extremely useful since the effect chains etc are already prepared. the video also shows what you can do with it. with all the effect chains etc no performance will ever be identical.

  • Is he triggering the vid clips too?

I don't think so. I've seen other Boiler Room episodes and they all seem to feature a similar video loop so I guess they run it themselves and the DJ or performer just does music.
