That app for when you have harmonic idea in your head, and you just want to quickly find the chords?

edited March 2017 in General App Discussion

I do understand western harmony, but I need help to identify that chord I hear in my head when I'm on the go (if I sit at the piano, it's easy)
Any apps that can help with that? Thanks!

Tonal harmony is too classical, suggester has gone full iap, chordbot ?

  • I'm a big fan of ChordUp.

  • I was playing with Chord Note today. Very basic and no connectivity but it's only $1 or something so a bit of fun http://therootage.com/iphone/chord-note-en/

  • I've tried SoundPrism, Chordbot, ChordPolyPad, ProChords, Fiddlewax, Chordion, Navichord... All nice and useful.

For me, ChordUp still the simplest to find "the chord in your head". Designed for midi use but I wish it was also AB compatible or had a recorder.

  • Thanks for the suggestions, guys. I just realized I own chordup but haven't really given it a try. I'll check it out along your other recommendations.

  • I vote Chordup. It's just so easy to flip through various chord types of all kinds. And plus you have 3 different playing surfaces to choose from for whatever works best for you.

    Piano Companion

  • ChordUp is great, but I'm not finding a way to change the notes and chord types... how does that work? Is there a manual?

  • @pedro you just hold down over a note and swipe to the chord type you want. There's an option in the settings to enable the type to be locked in for that note. Whatever chord you have selected at any time, the notes of said chord are what is playable at that time.

  • @db909 thanks, but is there a way to change the root notes on the grid, and what chords show when I press them? Or are those the only chord choices? Can I get other chord types than those that come by default?

  • Might want to look at Different Drummer, GuideTrack, or Guitar ToolKit also.

  • What I find in ChordPolyPad is much better than what I have in my head :) it is the most useful composition app for me

  • @pedro those are the only chord type choices yes. It's just all 12 notes with 9 chord types for each.
