Covers Club - March 2017
What is the Covers Club?
It's a place where musicians come to give and receive feedback on their cover versions. Anyone is welcome, whatever their level of ability.
The spirit of the club is to contribute: if you submit a song for others to comment on, you should also have the courtesy to listen to everyone else's contributions and give as much feedback as possible. Posting a track and not listening and commenting on others is not cool.
The purpose of feedback is to be honest. Essentially you should give your truthful impressions of the song, whether good or bad. Negative feedback, if done in the right spirit and with courtesy, can be the most useful and can help the artist to grow and improve and correct their mistakes.
All submissions are welcome, don't hesitate if you want to contribute.
We ask that you only post one song per month in this thread - if you're lucky enough to be able to produce more, then please just submit your strongest material.

Welcome Home. (The Reunion).
The first of three songs i plan to cover and hopefully they'll all tie in to form a story. Trying to find songs with lyrics that i can relate to personally, that i can feel when shouting, have a maximum of three chords, and maintain the link. This baby is the last chapter to get the happy ending out of the way first.
Will let Tony "fantastic" Blackburn do the honours. Guitarism, iFretless bass and Cubasis came along for the ride.
Brilliant!........ Reminded of the Sex Pistols stuff. Now one geezer.
@Bluepunk Fucking brilliant man. Sadly, I'm old enough to remember the original but your version certainly has the edge. On a more serious note, great all round production, you get some authentic sounding noises out of your iPad instruments. Carpenters next month? 'Mr postman, fucking look and see'

@studs1966. Thanks, it was a lot of fun to make. Your Pistols comment is nectar.

Thanks so much. I'm thinking a very quick dip into New Romantic territory could unearth something cute and fluffy to destroy for the next song, (the middle chapter). But, it must have the words, the link. TOTP 2 is on now. Ah, first song is Kajagoogoo, Too shy. Um, nope, not applicable!
@Bluepunk Badass!! Really amazing work. Your iPad skills are off the hook. This shit is powerful.
Hate to go in the extreme other direction, but here is some more melancholy sentimental shit! Cover of Milk Carton Kids. Michigan.
@Bootsy I LOVE you going down the melancholy route. Again, your voice wraps me in fluffy, white clouds and holds my hand tenderly. Floats me away to a paradise. Been reading another thread about talent/practicing etc. Have you always had the voice of an angel, or is this something that you've had to work long and hard to achieve? Beautifully felt guitar playing that compliments your vocal. And your harmonies......wow. My wife heard your song, drooled, and asked me to work hard and attempt a similar style in the future. I will. Thanks Bootsy! I will be asking for tips in 12 months time. Thank you for sharing your song. You ARE a talented soul.
@Bootsy, that was incredible. I could just listen to that 20 times in a row and be more moved each time. Would love to know a little about the creation of the track. Auria Pro or something else, effects used on the guitar and voice, any additional vocal processing, etc. Thanks for sharing a wonderful track!
@Bluepunk, Man if had your way with words I might have a few decent originals. Thanks so much for that very kind and colorful review! Please tell your wife thanks as well.
I guess I've always sang and always wanted to be a guitarist /singer but haven't done much of it publicly except for posting songs in different places. Haven't really worked to hard at it just try to stay in key I guess. I'll be glad to give help out any way I can.
Cheers!
@Bluepunk I don't know the track and that type of music is not my bag, but if you knocked that up on the iPad then Kudos to you.
@Bootsy again I don't know the original, but that was a pleasant listen, great vocals and well recorded all round.
I've only this to offer, a basic rendition from memory of Pacific State by 808 State. Done live with not too much preparation, or listening to the original beforehand, so much so that it's slightly out of key
A mixture of hardware and iPad apps, Sunrizer and Poison 202.
Oh, you have a way with words alright, no worries there because if this is the sort of evening I'm in for when I DO manage to sing in tune, those tips would be appreciated much sooner please
She did let me watch the boxing afterwards..sorry, I meant after all. And, the public DO need to hear you live. Man, guitar, Beetle. Perfect.
@Joel75, thank you for those kind words.
This was all cubasis. I have a pretty simple setup, 2 AT 4021 condensors in xy on my guitar, and a studio projects c-1 for vocal. 3 tracks going with the cubasis reverb and eq and a little compression on the master out, then overdub the harmony vocal and guitar noodling.
Thanks for listening.
Cheers.
@Bluepunk, I hope you didn't think my "try to stay in key" comment was meant as a tip for you. I was actually referring to my singing flat on some of the harmonies in this tune.
I love your voice! Great tone and character. One of a kind.
Cheers!
Awesome job on the cans @Bluepunk This one really keeps the ticker pumping!! Love the theatrical vibe you create around a solid musical performance. I think I remember a Pistols Christmas song with a similar feel. You nailed this! Looking forward to the rest of he trilogy.
Amazing performance @Bootsy ! Once again impressive musicianship and mix. Guitars and vocals very easy to listen to. Would love to hear a Dobro on this one. I'm sure you play that as well
. A master of keeping it in control. Nice job!
@LeeB Thank you. Am admiring your studio and thoroughly enjoy watching folk pressing all those flashing things in perfect time with each other. There's another gentleman who allows us into his domain to witness his skills. He also dances rather well. Check out Mr @crony over at SOTMC. Top tune sir.
Appreciate you taking the time to listen and comment, thank you. Pistols, Christmas, ticker pumping........ time to find that Perry Como album.
@Bluepunk that's a savage rendition of the 1970s guilty pleasure. I seem to remember the original being sung by a slightly creepy older guy accompanied by a girl that is about 30 years younger than him. So while your version might have the seedy older guy, where is the pretty young girl?
Also, I don't remember the "fuck off" bridge section in the original, might have to pop over to my gran's to dig out the 7 inch and check, but I'm pretty sure that is a more modern addition to the tune. I guess you wanted to bring it up to date, make it more suitable to today's ears.
Anyway it's hilarious as ever, there's always a wry smile behind your songs, even when you're shouting. The production is great, the timing is impeccable and your Guitarism skills just keep growing. You really need to get yourself an electric guitar, annoy your neighbours as well as us. Mind you, the neighbours must already be wondering what's going on when you record your vocals....
Thank you. Yes, good old Lennie Peters was Charlie Watts uncle. I'm still working on finding the girl 30 years younger part! Costs me a bloody fortune swearing in song mode because the neighbours on both sides receive a box of chocolates, for every one they hear. That's the deal. The pallet of Milk Tray delivered to each this morning, is payment for Welcome Home...... and to have some credit in the pot for the next one.
Learning new tricks in Guitarism with every play. Will try out in SOTMC. Cheers again.
@Bootsy beautiful as always, lovely delicate guitar playing and the vocal is out of this world. Love the harmonies as well. The chorus is sung with so much emotion, it's one of those rare covers that is better than the original.
@Fasteddie thank you! Man you peeps are kind to meI wish I could play the dobro, slide guitar eludes me. I bought a lap steel years ago and never got it.
@richardyot, thanks so much. That is a wonderful compliment! I moved away from MI and my family 36ish yrs ago, so when I heard those guys and this song in particular I knew I had to do it. That may have added some emotion to it. Thanks again
Cheers!
@LeeB, nice rig man! Fun to watch, cool sounds. Don't know the song but enjoyed watching and listening.
Thank you Bootsy and Bluepunk.
My effort, a cover of Wings by Birdy,. I comped the vocal from 12(!) different takes, and bathed the whole thing in lashings of delicious Pro-R.
@richardyot beauty! Definitely lush sounding vocals. Don't know the tune but I like it. Had to look it up. She's a beauty. So when you say comped 12 takes, all 12 are running throughout? If so that's pretty tight.
Cheers
Thanks! It's not a patch on the original, but she's got an amazing voice, so I wasn't expecting to get too close.
It's not 12 tracks of vocals playing simultaneously - comping is the technique where you record multiple takes and then choose the best take for each phrase in the song, so for example one phrase might be from take 2, and the next will be from take 6. In some contemporary songs they do it word-by-word, but that's taking things too far for me - however phrase-by-phrase helps me to get the best out of my still work-in-progress vocal skills, as my pitch can drift quite a bit, and also sometimes one phrase in one take just has a feel that the others lack.
Only the chorus section is doubled, the verses are a single vocal track, with a smidge of compression, delay, and a ton of carefully tuned reverb.
@LeeB that takes me back to my uni days, and sweaty Manchester nightclubs where bottles of water cost you a fiver. Nice version of the old classic, my only gripe is that the mix is all highs and lows, there's nothing in the middle so it sounds a bit boom-tizz. Maybe add some warmth to some of the synth sounds to try and get a more balanced mix.
@richardyot thanks for listening. I know what you mean regarding the mids in the mix. The main culprit being I slightly over hi-passed the main Pad sound removing a tad too much low to low mid. Being a one take live effort I'm not too fussed. You kind of have to commit and get one go at it and learn by your mistakes in every session. Had I done it On the iPad in a track by track manor I would have addressed it.
Well done on the Birdy cover. I like the original and I've only been able to listen via the iPhone speaker, but your version translated very well.
