12 Gauge Microphones

I recently found out about these guys from a friend. They are hand built, using spent shotgun and .50 calibre cartridges. The demo clips on YouTube sound pretty darn fine, and the price for the budget conscious is tough to beat, (one of the reasons many of us are into iOS music making). The acoustic guitar clip for the 12G50 sounds beautiful, so I have ordered one.

He includes raw wav files on the YouTubes to listen to. For me, I really want better acoustic tone; I'm not hearing on recording what I'm hearing while playing.

    Note that in the youtube video he is using (just assuming it is a man that would make mics from bullet shells!) two mics for a stereo sound, it is much easier to get a lush recording of acoustic guitar when doing it in stereo. I like that mic arrangement too (one by the bridge, one by the neck). I have used inexpensive, chinese small diaphragm condenser mics with similarly good results, but his demo sounds good too, with the less expensive omni electret mics. There would be more bleed with the omni's, and room sound, so it would be important to get them as close as is doable to the instrument.

    Thanks, @Processaurus. I will be experimenting a lot. I have my faithful old AT2020, I'm going to try close up with the 12 Gauge, and room with the AT2020, and also try the bridge/neck placement as well.

    Try the reverse of that too. The 2020 up close will give the guitar a little low end boost from the proximity effect. That effect is minimized with omni mics. Part of what makes them so useful, for sure, but can be musical either way.

    I'm assuming these are like a pair I bought years ago built into XLR housing. They sounded good; absurdly good for $20 each. I don't use them much anymore as I lost the mic clips and I don't record acoustically all that often these days.

    For sure, @syrupcore. Going to try a bunch of things. Classic home studio stuff; small room, that I can't treat easily. A fair bit of monkeying about will be required.

    What's really fun about mics this size is you can pretty easily put them anywhere. Hang from the ceiling with a hook or tape to the boom end of a mic stand... Great fun for experimenting.
