Honestly curious. I use it to play around with chord combinations when I'm sans guitar, or piano. Is that musically unethical?

I think you might be being a little hard on yourself....

  • No. It's fine. It just can seem like a short cut too many if you don't change it and make it your own at some point. You're free to use your results as you please, according to the dev. In fact, I heard Chordbot playing an NFL game out to commercials once as cheap and easy background music.

  • It's literally just a sequencer. If sequencing is cheating then no-one has made any "real" music for the last 30 years...

  • Closes eyes and keeps humming C Am F G, C Am F G....

  • I don't see it as cheating, but the thought seems to get mentioned anytime chordbot comes up. Anyway, moving on...

reverse that and you've got your chorus, too

Brilliant! Job done! And it's not even six o'clock. SXSW is up and running this evening, might wander down the street and see what trouble I can get into, secure in the knowledge that I have the hit all these young kids are out looking for...

    Ouch!

I have to disagree, though. I think the canned phrases, all made to seamlessly mingle together, puts it into a different territory. That said, I only mean it's cheating if you package it up with minimal additions and call it your own.

I've always felt I was cheating compared to those who spent their entire youth practicing someone else's music on an instrument they never loved or mastered. We're all making decent music from day one these days.

  • Haven't used chordbot in a while, tempted to update but might wait a few days while a few of the problems are worked through.

Yes, it's extremely musically unethical, when working on chord progressions the ethical choice is a quill, ink and parchment.

    How is using Chordbot cheating?

The moment you cheat for the sake of beauty, you know you’re an artist. (Hockney)

The right quote at the right time.

Ahhh, got it now. Thanks for clarifying!

It's no different in that sense to using an arpeggiator on a synth. Funny that I always stay clear of them because I find them unsatisfying, I don't want the machine to write my riff for me....

I think Chordbot's pretty cool though for putting chord sequences together, and I've even used the MIDI from it once or twice in a couple of songs, handy for when you need a piano arpeggio for instance. But it's just as easy to put chord sequences together on the guitar, and more fun as well.

In my mind a chord sequence is just scaffolding, something for the melody to sit on top of. Chord sequences are pretty limited, there's only so many variations you can put together (which is why the same ones always crop up), so I really don't see Chordbot as cheating. Is Fugue Machine cheating? That's an app that wants to write the melody for you as well.... None of it is cheating, I think it just depends on where you look for satisfaction when writing music. Some people like crafting great beats, others like to mess with complex chord sequences - personally I'm happy to use canned beats and simple chord sequences so I can write a melody, that's where the meat (and potatoes) is for me. But of course everyone's mileage may vary.

Cool, Dev told me this would be updated soon. He's pretty responsive. Anybody informed him of the bug yet?

Question: Are all your previous Chordbot files there and working after update? Just checking before I dive in.

    Cheers.

All of my terrible files are exactly as I left them. Now a REALLY clever update would have sorted out my lack of tuneful talent as well....

    Thank you sir!

I think the 'Meh' comments are coming from peeps who just do music differently.

Chordbot is awesome to input chord info of of songs already created elsewhere and to to try out different styles variations.

Just a great tool in the long process.

Agreed. Especially with the easy midi out into elsewhere etc.

  • @SpookyZoo If you mean me, I'm not meh at all. I use it lots. Just having a discussion. An interesting topic, I think.

And whoever put it on the NFL bumper I mentioned was cheating.

  • Just added 32bit support, so my old Phone's supported after all. Excellent.

    Good news! :)

And nope, my commented wasn't referring to you.

Some peeps on the first page shrugged their shoulders at the update. Was just highlighting that for some of us, who use it in different ways when making music (midi file out, swop out parts of chord progressions, audition different syles etc) are actually rubbing our hands.

    No right answer, etc!! :)

    Thanks to the Dev!

  • Thank you Mister/Missus Developer. Works a perfect treat.

  • Yay for 32b! Thought my mini was done. B)

  • Direct Midi out seems like a no-brained. Wouldn't it be nice to route all the instruments to different synths in Gadget?

  • A question:
Chordbot receive Midi Clock or Link?
