Sync Play/Stop between Genome & AUM?
Trying to figure out how to set up midi cc to either have the play/stop button in Genome to trigger the play/stop button in AUM or visa versa. I've tried a multitude of settings and am stumped. I thought I al,out had it working at one point, but it was short lived.
This is likely something simple I'm missing. I've got 3 synths with fx on each in 3 AUM channels. I've got all 3 synths set to channel 1. I've got a midi track on channel 1 that's driving the 3 synths. I also have an audio file loaded from AudioShare to play in a 4th channel in AUM.
I had the midi routing and midi cc control for the play putton in AUM set for channel 3, cc 95 & the same for the play button in Genome. I thought I had to use the echo button in the midi settings, but that's not working either. I've also tried turning off link and all 3 of the sync buttons tried in the Genom midi sync panel. No luck.
What I'd like to do is hit the play/stop button in AUM and have the play/stop button trigger my midi channel to start/play in sync with the audio file.
Seems like this should be fairly straight forward but I can't get the play sync to work. Suggestions?
Was thinking maybe it'd be easier to just set up a simple play button controller in Lemur to trigger both play buttons in Genome & AUM, but it seems like I shouldn't have to do that for something so simple.

Or, maybe this setup would be easier to do entirely in Modstep?
I was doing this in Auria Pro, but it kept choking with all the CPU juice gone from the midi file driving Fab presets. That's why I was trying to go the AUM route.
You could put them both in Audiobus and then use the Audiobus start/stop buttons to start them both at the same time.
You can load both into audiobus, and use the play button in the audiobus side bar to start both at the same time, with Link syncing the tempo.
As far as I can tell, you can't do it with internal Midi, unless you used a third app or controller, to fire a CC that you had assigned/midi learned to the play button in each. Neither genome nor aum seems to have the capacity to send a midi CC when you hit the play button in either. Genome sends midi clock and the start/stop commands, but aum does not respond to those. AUM responds to MMC, but genome does not send it. Genome responds to midi clock and start/stop, but aum doesn't send it.
The strange this is, there were times when I was able to hit the play button in Genome, and it would indeed start the player in AUM. I'd hit play on my midi track in Genome with the synths in AUM muted and ONLY the file player for AudioShare solo'd, and it would start to play. But, it would only play for about 5 seconds and stop. I tried so many things, I can't recall what my settings in Genome were, but I think I had "echo" turned on, and just one of the sync buttons selected (can't recall which). This worked briefly like this 2 or 3 times, then couldn't get it to work again.
I think I can make this all work within Auria Pro. I had it working in Auria, but it kept choking because I was driving some Fab stuff on the midi track. It wasn't really all that much and I've done MUCH more in Auria Pro without it capping out the CPU, but ever since that last AP update, it seems like I get the CPU warnings MUCH sooner now. I think someone else on the board was mentioning that too.
thx!
You can use an app like Sector to send out MIDI clock and respond to MIDI machine control messages. Sector will get tempo and stop/start from AUM via IAA Host sync and in turn control Genome. Setup in this way, Genome will respond to AUM's transport controls and tempo changes on the fly. It would be nice if there was an app that only provided this MIDI IAA clock transport control functionality. The source of the problem is not enough developers add IAA host sync to their apps. Patterning is another app that can also bridge this IAA host sync gap.
Are you absolutely sure there's no way to set the latest version of Genome up in a way via it's many midi sync settings to simply sync the play button with AUM's? It worked for me a few times but would stop playing after a few seconds. No idea what the exact settings were, but I know I had "echo" selected and I set the play midi control in AUM to "learn".
I'm going to try the Sector angle, but if I'm going to bother with yet a 3rd app, I might as well just make a quick and simple play/stop controller button in Lemur. Matter of fact, I think I'll just go ahead and do that. Syncing the play stop button of several apps at once with just one button might be handy to have.
Thanks!
Even though AUM can receive MMC, I haven't been successful with AUM responding to the start/stop messages sent out by Genome directly. You can use MIDI learn or assign a CC or note to the various transport controls in AUM. If you are not using all of the Genome MIDI channels in AUM, you could create a pattern in Genome and assign the notes in the pattern to AUM's transport controls. You'd filter out this MIDI channel in AUM to the apps receiving MIDI or alternatively add a MIDI CC not assigned to the apps you're using. For example, when Genome starts the note or CC can toggle record on and when the pattern loops back to the beginning or is the last note in your Genome timeline, it will toggle recording off in AUM.
The benefit of a Sector or Patterning approach is that including either of them means they could get Genome to change its tempo to match AUM and respond to AUM's transport controls and since AUM supports Link, this setup could be part of a Link network.
Are you allergic to Audiobus or something?
No. Just trying to get a better grip on midi stuff and understand the reason this isn't working. Dig?
Trying to think of a smart-ass reply, but it's Friday night and I'm tapped out. I got nothin.![:D :D](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/lol.png)
Come on, you're letting me down
I'll make up for it I'm sure.
No doubt
Genome is basically a funky beast. I used it to create a song that turned out very nicely, but I had to look up Anthony Alves' Genome to Auria Special Workaround in the Auria Forums to do it. Then, since I wanted drum stems, I had to select each lane in my drum sequence (triggering the Natural Kit from Sample Tank), and copy and paste each one at a time into a new groove while everything else was "off," for every drum voice (15 or 16) – in addition to the stereo drum mix, which became my "room" mic track.
Don't know if the bug still exists, but at that point (this was well before Auria Pro, mind), Genome would drift by 1 BPM downwards, even with everything hooked up properly, from time to time, and before each recording pass, it was important to double check that Genome hadn't slipped. Anthony notes that bug in his post. I was diligent on every pass except ... the snare drum part. So .. 3/4 of a 5 1/2 minute song features manually sliced and/repositioned snare hits ... yay! Well, I was going for a Stewart Copeland kind of feel, so perhaps it was a happy accident.
Still, as I started off, in the end it turned out quite nicely. Thought I'd share that experience in the off chance that current difficulties with MIDI clock might be related to Genome's funky implementation (at least, it was at the time.)
Here are Anthony's Genome to Auria instructions, in case that's still a thing, and if so, in case that might be relevant:

I suspected some Genome funkiness might be the issue since it almost worked a few times.
I'm out with the wife and only have my iPhone at the moment, but I'm going to try this later.
I know there are other ways to do this, but I was mostly just trying to solve a puzzle. Couldn't figure out if I was doing something wrong due to my general midi ignorance... or, if there was a bug/incompatibility I was unaware of.
Thank you for this!
You must be a lot of fun to be with.
You are thinking about Genome and why it won't sync............so funny.
I know I am not alone when my wife is like what are you doing on your phone, I'm like checking an email.
While I crop a sample for an Animoog timbre bank.
Oh, I'm not "fun to be with" at all! lol Though, I AM pretty good at having fun, ie. taking off to South America, climbing volcanos, recording exotic birds in an equatorial rain forest, wondering around aimlessly motorcycle camping and looking for colorful forests to make cinemagraphs of, chillin' in a forgotten surf ghetto... stoned out of my gourd in a hammock and groovin' on the sounds of waves crashing on the beach nearby.
Just not much of a "people person".![;) ;)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/wink.png)
Funny you say that about Genome. My experience with that app has mostly been positive and mostly intuitive. But, I'm not really a power user either.
The wife was reading the paper. She's old-school and still likes to go through actually printed text instead of zoning out on a "smart/idiotic" device like I do. So, I was just killin' time at the coffee shop and trying to avoid reading any more bad news. That's mostly what I used this forum and sound apps for lately... as a distraction from the darkness sweeping over the planet right now, and trying not to drink myself into a coma.
Yeah I was trimming back apps and doing well until Layr last night.
And Forever Beats.
And, well I ain't doin so well.
I don't drink or do drugs anymore so that's off the table any way.
I was just playin with ya man.
I totally get it.
I use Genome ONLY.
Doesn't make sense for the other apps time consumption to set up and use for me.
It is just so easy.
Trying to remember which app jolts it......................damn
Sector or Egoist I believe.
Yeah, I know.![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
And a big +1 on Forever Beats! Glad I picked that one up. Will likely mess around in that one tonight. The fixed midi out made this app a lot more fun for me. The wife's finished reading and I'm being summoned for errands.
Cheers!
I seem to recall Doug using the Midi clock from SeekBeats as a stable master midi clock for getting other apps to behave (in a pre-Link world), haven't tried that with Genome.
@skiphunt FYI the Sector app responds to Genome's start/stop so you might want to contact the Kymatica developer @j_liljedahl about how to do this and If AUM doesn't do this now, he can make it happen if he wants to.
