Can I connect a Tascam M-208 to an iPad?

A friend of mine just gave me a Tascam M-208. I have two interfaces for my iPad: a Focusrite 2i2 and an iRig Pro Duo. If I wanted to track a live drum kit (5-7 mics), is there an easy way to merge the Tascam with what I've already got? Below are pics of the Tascam. Thanks for any advice on this.

  • Hmm, interesting ! =)
Seems that you have 4 subgroups, so normally, you should have 2 stereo pairs out+ the main out on your Tascam.
That means you should consider it as 2 mini mixer, going to your 2 ipad sound cards...

You might wanna use one of your sound card as an insert, or as an AUX (to distribute effects from the iPad)

Test it out ! Now you've got the gear ! It seems to have a great reputation !

Thanks for the advice. So, there doesn't seem to be any way to send more than four individual audio signals out of the Tascam, right?

I don't see any way to do what I want, which is to record 4-8 tracks simultaneously in Auria or Multitrack DAW, with the Tascam, my audio interfaces, and my Air 2.

I suppose I could track audio on two iPads. I have an iPad 2, which should be able to record two tracks; and an iPad Air 2, which could record two. One interface on each?

The mixer seems like a waste of time, right?

Nope, just 4 out max, it seems...So you may have 4 individual track, on the 2 ipad...Then you'll have to transfer the takes between ipad, thru bluetooth could be quite fast, but bit fastidious.
Well, I wouldn't do that, I rather use it as a premixer for your drums, and have a stereo take to an iPad.

This mixer has a parametric EQ, might warm things up...Might be interesting to use a vintage guitar pedal in aux to create something original and crunchy...Or the other iPAd as an effect unit as an aux...
It really depends on the quality of preamps in fact, but I may think that they're good as the Focusrite or the Irig...So...

Thank you, sir. I like the idea of sending a stereo mix of a drum track. Great idea. Guitar input could be interesting too. Certainly could be fun to see if there's a difference in the way things sound with the preamps. I appreciate your help.

  • Maybe it could be possible use flb and fx send as another paur of dedicated outputs but in any way you will need another audio interface to record these 6 mono signals so submixing as @crony pointed will be my advice too. Keeping things simple as most and just focus on make great takes instead six part recording which will need audio surgery. If you have all the setup and enjoy "Aurianing"... great... but if not, why to deal with these mesh?

Thanks for the reply. I was hoping to be able to track a live drum kit and have as much control as possible for final mixing. I'll play around with it, and I got it for nothing. I appreciate you taking the time to help me out. Thanks, again.

  • Sometimes less is more ;)

  • Awesome @supanorton , Tascam gear has a huge place in my heart, from learning on Tascam PortaStudios to doing work at a project studio with an TascamMSR-16 reel to reel to my current Tascam US-2x2 iOS studio interface the stuff ALWAYS sounds great and is built brick shithouse tough.

Check out the forum http://homerecording.com/bbs/user-forums-by-brand/tascam-user-forum/ for excellent info on Tascam mixers from that era.

Like @crony said there's some options with the group outputs but to get the most out of it (especially if your interface can't handle multiple inputs) you may stick to using it as a submixer and record the main stereo outs only. If you have some live drums or a hardware keys setup you may lose some flexibility with not recording a track for each drum, individual L/R keys output, etc. but you'll still get the cool tone of the mixer.

    Good luck brother...

Thanks, man. If nothing else, I've got something to play around with. I appreciate your help. I had a Portastudio in the late '80s early '90s. I have to see if I can dig up the old cassettes. Thanks, again.
