I can't record automation with midi knobs either. Their problem is subtle: midi knobs only send CC messages, while the knobs are moving. So patterning wouldn't know when you are still tweaking, and it should write automation, or done, and it should stop writing, if the knob is still. It doesn't know if your hand is still on the knob.
It would be great if it wrote automation until you let up on the record button, once you touch a midi knob. "Latch" setting it is called in the DAWs.
