Enjoyed the run-through, thanks. It seems like an instant classic.
Yeah I think it is
Great demo, love the sounds! Your playing here is great as well, at least 2-3 sections could easily be expanded to produce full tracks!
Ahhhh, the video I've been waiting for. Thanks for this Doug, brilliant as usual.
Are the scales user editable in the way that Animoog is, where you can individually select what tones you want in the scale?
Yes
Thank you.
Just been building up some more layers and recording into Cubasis, this thing is insane
Would like to hear insane.
Yeah, this might be worth a Part Two Sir Doug![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
I hope that you record that insanity and share it with us.
Brilliant, Doug. Very inspiring, makes you want to dive in. Thanks a lot.
Great walk though, Doug. Agreed...it is completely insane! Do share your results.
I've put together a handful of drone patches if you're interested in checking them out. You can grab them from the link below.

Thank's for the video. I wish you have dived deeper into the Arp section
The sound seems still O.K. but nothing outstanding against other synths. But of course i never would imagine f.e. Model 15 like quality with 256 voices.
I think the nice workflow and easy layering is the great part of it. It really looks great.
The reverb is not so good i think. It makes huge sounds a bit too muddy and undefined from what i heard.
Some questions left. Can you also set velocity layers?
And maybe most important. Is it possible to modulate the FX too?
I think it's worth the price for a versatile synth with a nice sound and good workflow.
Especially for some layered arps and drones it might be good (the keys, leads and pads i heard didn't make it).
It's def. a synth you need to explore yourself and design custom patches.
I might grab it and see how far i can go with an iPhone 6S plus and compare it to sound design gems like Mitosynth and Model 15.
Thank's again for the video!
I want to like this synth because it looks fun to configure and I like the UI design. But, I've yet to hear anything that sounded even remotely "insane".
Don't want to disparage the sound engine in LayR, because I'm sure it's just a matter of personal preference. Not getting the warm fuzzies I get from synths like Mitosynth, Model 15, Animoog, iWAVESTATION, most of the Twin1&2 presets, TC-11, etc. LayR sounds only OK in comparison.
Though, I'm starting to wonder if that's because the majority of the samples so far are basically just the dev's presets. And maybe those presets he designed mostly as background accompaniment to other instrumentation and thus not stand out too much? Because the demos I've heard where users mixed LayR with guitar, a little perscussion, etc. sounded more appropriate for this synth's general character.
Thanks for the video! And +1 for diving into how the arp works![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
I can offer some answers here. The reverb, yes...it's not so good. I even go so far as to say it's quite bad and hard to listen to. Very thin, very shrill, though the frequency can be tamed a bit. And there are 4 different types. The delay is decent and can be tempo synced with cross feedback. There is also an EQ at the end of the path with low, mid (with Q adjustments) and a high band. None of the effects can be modulated however.
You can set velocity to control volume and filter amp mod.
As a drone creator it's one of the best I've seen. With the extensive modulation options for each layer, as well as MIDI events in the sequencer / arp it is possible to create some VERY rich and evolving textures; both tonal as well as just bizarre. Setting the filters to self oscillate, then modulationg the cutoff has made for some intense textures. Gangs of ghosts sorta stuff.
As a straight synth for leads, basses and such, it hasn't blown me away. It's missing a lot of warmth. If you saturate it through additional effects in AUM, etc. it REALLY helps. But by itself it's kind of an ice queen and I'm not sure if it fills a unique void as a "versatile" synth. But like I said, as a textural, evolving drone maker, it's in a league of its own for certain.
Hope that helps!
Only guessing at your definition of "insane," but I can say that I have been able to milk some insanity out of it. At least based on my interpretation of the word.![;) ;)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/wink.png)
Drop me a note at bricebeasleydesign[at]gmail.com if you want me to shoot you some mp3 examples.
Which reminds me of that I never said "thanks" for the preset download! Thanks! Very inspiring! I need to create some and share too, just for the heck of it.![ ](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smiley.png)
This LayR app is a MONSTER
Model is a Mod sound, duh.
Unlike MITO, this app hits all the boxes for the depth of the sound where sometimes the samples or interface limits fall short for me using MITO.
This has a really impressive sound for anyone who loves synths.
Yes, thank's!
Thanks for another nice demo, Doug - I remember thinking when you hit that first Low C pad, "Wow, you could build an entire ambient music album with just this app."![:sunglasses: :sunglasses:](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/sunglasses.png)
Very cleverly designed app. A true piece of art.
Discovered with great help from Doug, a great enthusiastic performance, and John Walden's great and informative review on MusicAppBlog. Hereafter pulling the trigger almost felt like a nobrainer.
No worries! And you're welcome. They might come in handy should you ever enter a rewarding career in haunted house management. Oh god, I hope you aren't already the manager of a haunted house![:# :#](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/grimace.png)
Yeah do it! Will be interesting to hear different takes on this synth.
Thanks for that insight, I'm jumping off the fence when funds permit. Evolving soundscapes are my thing. I thought the Arp looked like the killer feature from first impressions I still think this is the case.
No problem. The Arp is definitely a great feature...but if evolving soundscapes are your thing then I believe you'll be even more attracted to the modulation capacities of Layr. LFOs will scale from as slow as 2 bars (tempo synced) right up into audio rate territory. Plus, the LFOs each have 10 different wave shapes, offset, time scaling, etc, which can then be combined in a multitude of ways to create some really interesting modulations. And there is an additional random LFO for good measure. And all of what I just mentioned is PER LAYER. So imagine 16 different layers, each under the command of its own LFO army. It's intense!
Hey, I dropped you a note earlier today. Did you get it?
