  • Just so we're clear: we're not planning to be a killer for anything. Audiobus 3 is meant to improve the workflow for musicians so they can spend less time setting up things and more time making music. That's what we focused on, and only on that.

Pretty sure that will never happen due to how it's author was speaking about it.

But nothing stopping in the future from AU sequencers being developed (when ios updates to allow it) or j_liljedahl developing a separate sequencer app which connects to the same filespace as AUM

focus on the value. love it

  • I expect, and sincerely hope, that with the AB3 release we will see same the r/evolution for midi that the original AB brought to audio. I think that devs having access to what I'm sure will be a clearly laid out midi SDK will finally end the, to me, chaotic and hit and miss of getting midi from point a to b.....

More than enough. Looking forward to it.

  • If AB3 forces apps to support state saving (regardless the app format) then it would be instant buy.

No, that would not make AB3 on par with AUM. With AUM, you can send 60 % of the signal to mix bus B before effect 1 and 30 % to mix bus C after effect 2, with B and C both sending to D where they get effect 3 treatment before being fed back to the original input. It is a highly versatile live mixer. I don't believe (or see the point of) AB3 reimplementing all of this. But a basic mixer in AB3 would be nice.

Hosting multiple instances is technically only possible if the hosted app is an AU.

AB3 and AUM will happily co-exist.

Not to mention that you can use MIDI to automate the channels in AUM for volume, mute, recording, playing, panning, bus send levels, and more. MiMiX can provide some of these functions but not to the degree AUM can. I agree AUM and Audiobus 3 will happily co-exist and at times improve upon the strengths of each.

I hope that there will be some competition between AB3 and AUM on the features side. A build in midi sequencer for example would be nice in AUM.

I'd prefer not to have a built-in sequencer in AUM as I want to keep the app lean and add in other apps as and when I need them. There are already lots of MIDI sequencers and DAWs with MIDI sequencing. I would welcome a MIDI sequencer from Kymatica that integrates well with AUM. The more complicated the app, the more work that is required to update the app as well and I'd rather have more frequent updates to respond to iOS audio environment changes.

And of course I didn't meant an AB3 would litteraly kill other apps. Workflow is something personal and most people get used to a certain workflow, and although it can be that their workflow is not the most efficient, they hold on to it because they are for example very familiar with it.
The point that I wanted to make is that we could end up with certain apps that can do more or less the same things. The personal workflow and extra possibilties and of course price tag will determine the succes. And of course all those apps could be even be successful for different people. For me AB3 could be a killer for AUM just because of the workflow and possibilties.
Interesting to mention is a thread from a while ago with the subject: "I'm finding recently i don't use audiobus anymore." https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/14503/im-finding-recently-i-dont-use-audiobus-anymore This because the starter of the thread did everything with AUM. But certainly AUM was not a AB killer and others just went on using AB.

  • So will there be a mixer in AB3 as well, @Sebastian?

Yes, a simple input mixer to adjust levels for all audio generators. At least that's what we're starting with in Audiobus 3.0.

    Yay! And Mute/Solo/Pan as well?

Great :) Will there be multiple output routing to different channels of an audio interface?

Some simple yet powerful AU sequencer and the ability to run its midi to AU sound generators
