cheapest ipad that will keep up for minimal duties
so, super happy with my ipad pro 12.9 and iphone plus, which have mostly taken over most duties, along with my op-1. gassing as always, looking at drum machines, synths, fx, etc....this is apparently never going to change but the truth is i hardly go down into my studio to power up any of my hardware. i love it, just don't use it. my lazy ass prefers lounging on the sofa, going to the park, etc.
anyhoo...thinking of picking up an ipad to solely run patterning or some other drum machine, fx, etc. basically something with link and not have to keep switching screens. will a mini 4 work? ipad air 1? what's the oldest i can go?

I'm still pretty happy running stuff like what you want to do on my ipad4 (running Patterning with a couple of fx and maybe a synth or two at once.) ... I think an Air1 would more than suffice for your needs.
what's newer? the 4 or the air1?
the air1 is newer - ipad 4 is 32 bit only, Air1 and up is 64 bit - and faster processor in Air too. Think it's the same Ram
My air1 (newer than 4) is great still. Only reason I am looking at pro is for pencil.
hmmm, prices aren't too bad. lemme see what i can hock. i guess i should try for 64 bit minimum. which is oldest mini with 64 bit?
Yep, get the Air 1st gen. It is the first iPad with 64bit processor. They can be found pretty cheap on eBay. Or Apple.com has refurb units if you're buying in the US.
i got an Air 1 and everything runs great on it- mostly use Gadget tho it's been a little while. ymmv
iPad Air1 without discussion.
Reason: You are loosing lots of performance* with iPad 4 or lower - the financial gain dont justify this. iPad Mini 2 would be a good choice, too (same processor etc.), but for my taste it is just a bit too small. Less fun, i would say.
(* iPad Air 1 has a big performance advantage for 64-bit apps of about 60-80 percent compared to an iPad 4)
Not sure, but i don't think the air 1 is produced anymore since they launched the air 2 32gb. Since they launched the air 2 (32gb) for only 399,- the air 1 suddenly disappeared from the stores here in Holland.
The cheapest new iPad you can buy off the Apple site is an iPad Mini 2 32GB for $269. The Mini 4 32GB and the 9.7" Air 2 are both $399 with identical specs (except screen size and A8 vs. A8X, whatever that means), but most here think the Mini 2 is suitable (64-bit).
Of course there are rumors of new iPads coming and waiting might be a good idea, but isn't that always the case? And then the Mini 2 is likely to drop off the list and the cheapest will be more expensive.
thanks for that...this should be a sticky, on ongoing thread that keeps track of devices that can keep up. going to wait to see what happens, truthfully both my kids have ipad minis and i make sure they are in bed by 9, so i can use one for patterning. thanks peeps.
I recommend what I use - iPad mini2
Awesome compact machine. Never any issues.
I don't overload it like crazy but always am able to run what I want. In gadget there is a limit to the number of gadgets you can run simultaneously. around 8 or 9?
If you have anything you'd like me to test, I can do it for you. See how far you can push it.
