Which iOS DAW are you "Finishing" the Most Songs In
Avid songwriter on "real instruments" (three records in the last five years), but cannot finish a thing in iMaschine2 (though it's good for the occasional verse or chorus). Any recommendations for something new?
Thanks!

The apps that aren't daws but more grooveboxes that can feel like instruments in their own right are where I finish the most stuff. Stuff like figure, iKaossilator, probably Beathawk but I just recently got that. Auxy definitely has that vibe too.
If I ever get around to finishing anything Auria Pro has everything I need (the IAP PSP plug ins are on sale now too FYI). Not cheap but worth it for me.
I hear Cubasis has good reviews and may be a little more straightforward to use compared to AP, don't have it so will leave others to comment.
For me - gadget - but not really a daw. More so now... but then GarageBand.
Auria! Everything you need to record an album![ ](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
Auria Pro. Not everything starts there, but everything ends there.
Well XovNus of course.
I would like to say Auria but midi wise it still has tons of workflow killer bugs
Auria Pro is the final authority for mixing my audio files. Can't really do MIDI in it worth a sh*t without it shrinking my audio buffer to an unusable level, but with Audioshare integration, I can import whatever I export from other apps (whether loops or complete stems) and mix as I please with the Fabfilter plugs.
Start: any one (or more) of guitar, Music Memos, Gadget, GarageBand
Finish: Auria Pro
Regarding MIDI in AP, I always save a new copy of the project once the MIDI parts are written, and bounce everything down to audio for final mixing. I treat the MIDI like a separate project, as if I was working in another app (like I would with Gadget or GB).
My point with midi and AP are the self editing capabilities: I edited track A and magically also track E is edited in some creative way
Instrumental: Blocswave.
Record songs: Garageband.
Live gigs: Launchpad.
AUM, in a live, jammy kinda way.
It was NanoStudio and BeatMaker 2.
I never did a whole track in other iOS DAW's. Even when i have/had them all.
I've not had that one personally - have you reported the bug on the AP forum? If you know the steps to reproduce it I can report it.
Avid composer here (17 albums in 2 years)
and I mainly work in Cubasis even if I occasionally get some initial ideas done in Gadget, Blocswave or playing some apps via Audiobus or AUM. Mastering I do in Audiomastering.
I do have Auria Pro but I just can't gel with it even after several attempts- I always end up frustrated trying to do even the simplest things.Yes, I know it has more "professional" features but it slows me down too much. Some of the other iOS musicians I work with use Auria and they often do the final mastering in Auria which sounds great so I am not knocking Auria in any way - I just can't get it to fit me personally.
Yes, I do run into occasional issues with Cubasis but not usually with the ideas, recording or mixing process. The main issues I come across are instability when using IAA. I love using AUFX:Space but often get errors, with apps failing to connect, when I come back to a project in which I have IAA on some tracks. Also, when mixing down projects with at least 1 IAA track, I still get tons of empty space at the end on the track. Also when sending stems to collaborators who are not using Cubasis we sometimes see synch issues where the other person has to move the stems by 1/32 or 1/64 not to bring them into synch with their project. Both of these issues have been reported to Steinberg more than once and several versions ago so those are my main frustrations with a Cubasis. But I will continue to work with it as it suits my workflow, though I will also look again at Gadget now it has Audio and some guitar fx.
Just curious, what simple things get you stumped?
As for bugs with IAA (and AU as well for that matter) that is sadly universal, Auria often glitches with IAA and AU.
Start : Infinite Looper
End : Auria Pro...but it is actually a pain because it is becoming less and less stable. Several times I had to close a project and reopen it to see the signal indicators on tracks, the CPU indicator is regularly going crazy (as I do). Ok, I'm still on an ipad4 and it is more than time to upgrade - I hope it will solve these issues.
I dont finish on ios, but on ableton. Ios daws are just too much hassle to use and i got very good plugins on desktop
Finishing on iOS is brutally unstable across the board...but right now GarageBand has the least friction for me. Have to stay away from most AU at the moment though.
It's true that anything with midi/IAA/and lesser so AU can cause issues in most DAWs, but while doing straight audio mixing for my latest CD I went weeks on Auria Pro without a crash. It was an absolute pleasure. If I could only be so lucky on the desktop! I really haven't had too many problems with the AU Instruments I've played with... so I'm crossing my fingers we're on the road to something more reliable on the instrument front.
Same for me. The approach I take with any software, iOS or desktop, and that includes the 3D software that I make my living with, is to accept the limitations and work around them.
I know that Auria needs a large buffer, and that it works much better with its own native plugins than it does with IAA or AU. This means that my workflow is based on bouncing MIDI to audio as soon as possible, and using the native plugins rather than external apps. This results in a pain-free experience, but it also means that I have to accept the limitations. If your workflow is much more MIDI centric then that might not be acceptable, in which case something like Modstep would be a better fit.
For mastering in iOS i find the Audio Mastering app the best by a country mile. Sometimes i likes the results more than what i get out of Logic Pro.
I failed to do it with Auria and the Fabfilter plug-ins. Must be user fault.
But everything went unstable for me and i couldn't think of doing it again.
So waiting for BeatMaker 3 and NanoStudio 2 which do the job again.
All in 1 or groovebox type apps are usually where i'm most productive but as far as favourite iOS DAW, Cubasis though Garage Band is getting there
Hi @richardyot it is really just unfamiliarity with Auria and its menu structure rather than Auria itself. Also, since I am so used to using Cubasis and can manage to achieve most of the things i need really quickly and easily (my needs are quite basic!) I haven't had any real incentive to get used to Auria, which has so many extra features it is quite daunting and confusing to me. I get feature blind in Auria and sometimes can't see the simple things I am looking for amongst the more advanced features e.g. How to turn on the metronome and count-in (which I have since found) and getting used to the piano roll editor (I end up deleting notes instead of selecting/moving them etc. ). I am sure that if/when I come up against something I really want to do in Cubasis but can't then I would certainly try it in Auria and spend some more time with it but Cubasis gives me everything I need at the moment.
@AlterEgo_UK that makes sense, I agree that Cubasis is much easier to get going in, and more straightforward to use.
BeatMaker 2.
I've been very lucky on desktop I suppose, it's been rock solid for years. I have Auria but it's user interface obviates the allure of the iPad for me. It doesn't draw me away from the two desktops I have right next to it. Cubasis is more approachable, but I can't trust its timing on export. GarageBand is next in line but it's AU effect support has been ironically the most unstable of all.
But I still believe iOS daws will turn the corner in 2018. Until then it's something I use, but never recommend to friends

Start: Samplr
FInish: Auria pro
Cubasis with a bunch of AU's is great. Played with AP for a few days and it crashed about 20 times enabling the warp and slice options. AP has a very clumsy interface, but got some extra features. I should start with Samplr if you don't care about synths and want to be blown away by the sound it can produce only using 6 tracks. Samplr is great.
Is it time to collectively wish (again) for a Samplr update? I thought I saw a tweet from the dev saying it was coming ... Maybe I hallucinated.
