Using an iPad and Surface Pro combo
Anyone here got any stories of how they have used this combination for music making? Anyone here actually using this combination? Anyone have any really good links to post of videos of this combo being used?

Yes, my Surface Pro plays real music via Spotify while I make squelchy iPad noises sat on the sofa...![ ](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smiley.png)
Jaja. The best use for the surface pro!
My Surface 4 Pro has a couple of roles in my setups.
In my home setup, it's mostly used as my secondary PC running Reason 9 and Ableton Live Lite. This along with my desktop running Maschine/Komplete and my iDevices running both controllerapps as well as the whole enchilada of softsynths, drummachines and other instruments.
In my mobile setup it takes on the roles of my desktop, running Machine/Komplete and whatever, not least does it work as MIDI and Audio hub. It works quite nicely for me, though of course not without occational quirks. Sometimes a lot of quirks tbh.
Ableton Link plays a major part in my playflows.
Right now I'm enjoying the new Viking 2 rack extention from Blamsoft. Probably my favorite synth at the moment.

Mobile studio setup interests me the most. The Suface as a recorder and the iPad as an instrument. Do you find the pen useful using the Surface as a DAW? How do you find touch as an interface being used on Windows for the Surface, does it work well with software you use?
I find myself using the pen as little as possible, but you need to have it handy, as touch is not very well implemented in any af the daws I'm using. But I mostly get away with what I need. I also have to say, that my mobile setup is used for jamming, occationally with others. Hardcore daw work not so much on the road, or at sea not so much. I mostly go outside for pleasure and inspiration, bringing the tools i like for having a good time.
Anyway, just in case you don't know it i would recommend http://www.moltenmusictechnology.com
Robin has a lot of great videos both general an specific about surface in music production.
Thanks. That's most helpful. Simple recording and jamming is my area of interest![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
A big issue may be battery time, if there is no mains nearby. There's not juice for more than a couple af hours or maybe 3. I have an adapter for 12v -> 18v which I use in my boat. Powerbanks for use with SP are quite hefty and expensive, and not easy to come by either.
Worth knowing thanks.
Mobile DAW production on Surface Pro (3) has no peer on iOS...I'm using Bitwig, FL 12, Sunvox and MTS on Surface Pro, all of which have top tier touch integration...my integration with iOS basically has me shipping MTS and Sunvox projects back and forth, or making stems on iPad in all the interesting production options to ship into Bitwig
I use that combo iPad<>PC with Ableton, Reaktor. I have a PCR300 midi controller Zoom U24 sound card and my main goal was to have midi and audio between the two and use the midi controller on both, iPad/PC.
Solved it with a Y midi cable and Alesis midi hub and two 1/4 jack audio cables.

Hilarious
My Surface Pro 3 is my "main" machine. I don't have a desktop or laptop. I use Studio One on it. I usually start songs on the ipad and finish them in Studio One.
I also use Studiomux to use the ipad as a midi controller using apps like Jam Maestro or Geoshred to give me guitarist friendly control of my VSTis in Studio One. I also use Studiomux to record audio from ipad into Studio One.
For me, the ability to use a mouse and keyboard make it much easier and faster to edit audio and midi than the clunky touch interface of ios.
Also, some plugins available as VST don't have ios equivalents yet (melodyne, vocalign).
I hardly use the pen on the SP3. I have a BT mouse and keyboard connected 99% of the time. It's mobile, but it's still a pc for me. When I want the freedom to pull a device out of the bag and play anywhere, I use the ipad.
How usable is the touch screen with reason?
How is the audio stability on your surface? I abandoned the PC for anything audio related because I could never get rid of clicks and pops and driver problems, and because the mac just worked.
Audio for me, with ASIO4all, all sweet. Audio stuff is well sorted these days, Microsoft brought in needed personnel a while ago, and the DAWs I'm using all grok nicely with 10
The touch experience with Reason is, truth to be told, not very good. First and foremost there is no multitouch support, secondly it's fiddly due to the lack of scaling options. You will need to have your pen within reach and a keyboard also does come in handy, for the shortcuts. I mostly tend to do my initial buildup and tweaking on my desktop. And then I need to praise my Nektar Panorama P1. It's a godsend for parameter tweaking. There is also also a nice utility called toolbar creator, that basically lets you make buttons to substitute keyboard shortcuts and key sequences. Robin at moltenmusictechnology.com demo's it in one of his videos, though with Cubase iirc. Lastly I will mension

should you have a spare iPad. I find it slightly embarrasing to have to it use with the SP, solely to overcome the week touch implementation in Reason, it can be justified as it give you multiscreen options.
To sum, playing on a finished rack is absolutely OK, whereas building up and tweaking not so much.
As for the audio I have no problems at all, using external interfaces. I use a Steinberg UR44, but even an UCA202 will do. As long as you do not overload the SP everything is absolutely fine. I guess that goes for all systems. You CAN also use the built in audio, as long as you run it throuh Asio4all, but I would not recommend it.
Lots of great info thanks to all![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
