Sounds pretty powerful. Will look into it. Thanks mucho.
So I fixed the grounding problem on my EWI USB. It was a slightly loose connection apparently. Now it works on iOS devices too. Only sometimes it just disconnects until I unplug and replug the cable. I'm not sure why that happens. I'm using the newest CCK with a lightning cable powering it. Maybe I should try it with a hub in between but this is more elegant.
The person who brought us some free Magellan patches for Wind Controller just released some free Thor patches. @Kirth_Gersen_ shared it from Discchord (came to the forum after playing with these patches).
https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/18730/free-thor-patches-for-ewi-players/p1
One of the patches emulates the “Michael Brecker Effect” whereby a single note from the Wind Controller triggers rotating chords. Maybe @Munibeast will get interested.
For my part, been mostly playing with Sonic Pi. Now that the newest alpha supports MIDI I/O, it’s a real treat to use it with my Wind Controller. Won’t bore you with all my little explorations and experiments but it’s providing me with quite a lot of pleasure.
Thanks for sharing, @Enkerli, they're very nice patches! Sometimes I get some glitchiness happening on the mini 4. Will have to see if a reboot would fix it.
At long last, was able to use my Wind Controller (Yamaha WX-11) during jam sessions.
First time was last Saturday, during Drone Day. Second was last night, at Art House Café.
In both cases, the iWavestation ZZ Lead patch served me well. Used it within Gadget, to easily drive filter cutoff frequency through breath control.
It’s not necessarily my ideal setup, but the novelty aspect made a bit of an impact. Making my way through the local scene, this kind of effect is just the thing needed. But it’ll be important for me to have a more stable setup sometime soon, to go beyond the initial impression.
Something that some of you might find interesting is this approach to tweaking patches to make them wind-savvy:

Nothing we don’t know, perhaps. But it’s still useful to think about.
Was told about the Yamaha MU100R module. It integrates a VL engine similar to (yet, it sounds like, different from) the VL-70m @u0421793 mentioned early in this thread. Other devices in the MU series could be expanded with a VL engine, but it sounds like the MU100R is the only one which has it on board. It’s available on eBay at a rather decent price, though shipping and customs can make it somewhat expensive.
Might buy a used EWI USB. Kept thinking that it wasn’t much of an improvement over my WX11 (since it doesn’t produce any sound on its own). But the price is low enough to make for neat experimentation.
Two quick things...
1) As discussed in other threads, getting an Eigenharp instead of an EWI-USB. Quite a difference, in terms of expressiveness. It’ll require a computer running a desktop OS, but that can work with Raspberry Pi.
2) Eventually bought iFretless Brass, after noticing that it was considered MPE-compatible, and after listening to some demos. Much more to my liking than iFretless Sax. (But brass players might think iFretless Sax sounds more realistic than brass...) (Although, now noticing that Sax and Bass are listed by Roger Linn, not Brass. Anyhoo...)
With TingJing MIDI Rotator, the effect is rather neat, if you ask me:
My EWI USB arrives on Thursday. I have a Ipad Pro that came with a Lightning-to-USB cable. Can I use this to connect the EWI, or do I need the CCK?
I made a diagram awhile back for these instances. HTH
Good luck with your EWI. I posted a hook-up diagram in the previous post.
Thanks very much, Marty, much appreciated. So the CCK is mandatory? The Lightning-to-USB won't work?
I consider the CCK to be the same as the lightning to USB. I could be wrong.
The cable that comes with the later Ipads is Lightning-to-male USB plug, whereas the CCK has a female USB jack. I suppose it won't hurt to try the cable I already have before I drop a ridiculous amount of money on a new cable, but knowing Apple they will most likely force me to buy a $40 cable in the end.
Thanks again, Marty. Have you got a youtube or soundcloud channel? I'd like to check out what people are doing on Ipad with the EWI usb,
Totally thrown by title thought u meant this app!

Last I heard FreEWI needed an update for it to run on iOS 11. Has it been fixed?
Just got my EWI USB yesterday. Today I got this poster tube from Jerrys Artarama for $4 and change. I would not trust it for travel, but to keep the ewi safe at home while not in use it is perfect.
Congrats. Looks very Star Trekkie. Put some glow sticks in it.
Hmmm, maybe i don't need a hub in all situations anymore. Will test with different adapters.
I do have a Soundcloud acct, but haven't posted any EWI on it... Or anything else worth listening to for that matter.
The standard male USB to male lightning into a non-powered usb hub did not work. I had to drop the $33 for the Apple cck plus another $15 for a usb hub. I got the EWI for $200 new, and now have spent an additional nearly $50 just for cabling to plug it in. This is why I hate Apple.
Please recommend the most expressive EWI patches/samples on ios. I am especially looking for a good trumpet sound, where blowing harder gets you more blat on the attack. The Thumbjam trumpet is good, but does not have velocity-sensitive blat.
I have Magellan, Layr, Thumbjam, Sunvox, and Isem in my ios synth arsenal, plus the built-in Cubasis parts.
Hopefully you have the Garritan library installed on a PC that came with the EWI. The are a few really nice trumpets in there.
On the iOS platform you can assign controllers for expressive control in Magellan, Thor, IM1 and a few others like iSax.
I also have Alina Strings which natively responds to aftertouch so it works right out of the box for EWI.
What are your favorite EWI patches on ios, Marty?
To get started I bought a set of Thor patches for EWI from Bernie Kenersons site.
http://www.berniekenerson.com/newslessonsrefills/ewi_thor_refill_vol_1/
I used several of his patches as starting points for my needs. I like warmer synths similar to some Roland's I had in the 80's or some Moog-ish filters . Bernies' tend to be brighter and I wanted to add a bit of lfo movement.
If you need a lot of control then Magellan's modulation routing is way comprehensive. You can even save custom setups so I have one just for EWI.
I got Bernie's Thor patches too. They are good, but as you say, mostly quite bright. Also, many of them has got a lot of velocity controlled attack. Good for some things, but it can be too much in many cases. For more mellow and smooth "classic" EWI sounds there are not many in there. However, I recently found these free Thor EWI patches that are really hitting that spot: http://wx5.blog2.fc2.com/blog-entry-448.html
It got a 64bit upgrade about 6 months ago.
Thx yoe. Always appreciate good EWI patches.
I admit that there are a few synth sounds that work rather well with the EWI. I don't remember which app or VSTi I used, but next time on iOS I surely will try Ripplemaker, Model 15, and Zeeon.
Good luck. Let us know if any are successful. Varying degrees of expression from app to app I bet.
This looks fantastic! Trying it out next week on my EWI-USB..

These are so tempting.
I’ve been considering this one for a few days but keep reminding myself that my usb cable is 3 meters long which is plenty of freedom in my studio. I tend to keep my rigs simple, especially for stage use.
For now my practical side is winning the battle, but who knows around Xmas time or a really good sale price. I also want to keep it to an iPad and interface only for now anyways.
I would like to about how reliable it is in a RF tornado like at some shows can be.
Quick follow up on my post. The wireless BT works great on the EWI - I notice, though that like my Nanokey Studio, the BT will disconnect if there is no activity for some time and I have to use an App that can connect the BT such as GarageBand or Gadget. Once connected though, it seems to play great with no discernible latency so far. I got a bit of a larger battery, but the weight difference isn’t bad. I put it on top of the EWI with the Velcro tape.
