@jesse and @boon51 thank you. Think you just saved me $16 bucks.
The funny thing is I've yearned for Cubasis for months, all the while putting up with various annoyances in BM2... but the day I finally bought Cubasis I just wrapped up my latest song in BM2, and I came to the realization that I really adore BM2. It has some really frustrating parts, but I've finally gotten over the learning curve and gotten used to the workflow, and now I feel like I'm connected to it, haha.
That said, the real reason people like BM2 is the sampler, which I basically don't touch, ever. I use it exclusively as a DAW, and for that task it's not the best:
Still, all this aside, it feels kinda like home.
OTOH, Cubasis is built to be a slick, straightforward, logical DAW that addresses almost all the issues I described. Even though its included VI's and synth aren't the strongest, they're definitely usable and have plenty of potential. And I'm the kinda guy that likes to have a lot of presets to choose from and then play with them to get them where I like, so I'd rather have them than not, and if they're built into the DAW then all the better. AB is great but it's still an extra step, which takes time, effort and precious iPad resources.
So, Cubasis looks great... mostly. It's what I need to be using, assuming I can work past the UI differences (and that darn pinch-zoom issue!!)
dammit.
@syrupcore Tough decision? ;-)
Lol. Are you called syrupcore because you like waffling so much?
yes and yes, I guess.
edit:
I've actually been using logic 8 lately, remixing "dis______" and I sort of forgot just how big the delta is between computer software and ipad software. It has been, for the most part, a surprisingly pleasant experience. Compressors and delays and reverbs and EQs and unlimited auxes and super flexible routing/bussing... all without even considering my CPU or RAM. Logic's instruments are largely a complicated and overdesigned horror show compared to the best iPad instruments but since I've mostly just been dealing with audio it hasn't put me off.
That is all to say, I don't really expect amazing power. I just want to be able to reliably sequence iOS apps. I want NS2 but am tired of waiting. By all accounts, I'd rather have cubasis but I do a lot of CC manipulation and wouldn't mind having the chop lab. BM2 has sorta put me off for years though. so yes, syrup and waffles.
See, I have no experience recording on a desktop system. I mean I've played around with a couple free apps and trials and that kind of thing over the years, but I have never earnestly tried to record a whole song or anything like that. But now that I'm getting some momentum on the iPad I wonder if I should try it... I love the iPad as a creative tool and an expressive instrument, but I don't want to be some elitist that refuses to use a desktop environment for any aspect of the recording process just because I want to restrict myself to the iPad. It's all about the right tool for the job, I suppose.
Still, I don't have anywhere near enough time to even scratch the surface of the iPad's potential, so maybe I should just keep practicing and trying to improve with the tools I have :-)
Ps - I'm super excited to hear what you've come up with for Dis_______!
A computer is a tool, and there are varying degrees of useful tools out there, based mostly on price points, but the mobility aspect should command a premium. I think we're in an alternate universe where the opposite is true. I won't and shouldn't complain. But for the musicians, I think it's worthwhile to explore all the tools at our disposal, and I'm probably as guilty as most for not doing so. I have a MacBook Pro with Logic Express, Ableton LE, Cubase LE, and several others, along with an array of hardware, however I've gotten to the point that I rarely turn my laptop on. It's so much easier to launch an iPad app than to go through all of that, even though the desktop apps usually trump any iPad equivalent....until it comes to ease of use and accessibility. It's so easy to lie in bed, sit at my desk at work, etc., and turn on my iPad and create that I can't picture stepping backwards, even for the sake of more power and capability. This is the direction we're heading. Devs might not like it, due to the new pricing structure, but it is what we've already grown accustomed to. It might stifle creativity within the apps, if it isn't lucrative enough, but there is a new expectation. Good or bad is irrelevant to some degree. The reality is that there is an enormous vault of tools at our disposal, and I think the very best musicians will know how and when to use them. And if you think I'm placing myself in that category, then you should realize that I've just had too much to drink and never have enough time to get anywhere close to that reality. And if you think that this should have been split into three or four different paragraphs, then you probably drank less than I did and are entirely correct. And if you think that I've hijacked this Cubasis thread for something totally irrelevant than you may have had more to drink than I had. ;-). I do own and enjoy Cubasis, along with Auria, BM2, NanoStudio, MT Daw, Meteor, n-Track, MusicStudio, and others. I don't view them as competitors though. They all bring something different to the table. As long as I can take advantage of each of their strong points, I don't have any plans on pitting them against each other. For the price, I'll take as many as I can get!
I'm kind if with funjunkie. I'll just keep all the awesome music making apps I have and use each one for what I love it for. Despite its abysmal file management, insane process to simply delete a track, and other annoyances, theres no way I will delete BM2 off of my iPad. Just couldn't do it. Love the chop...and just about everything else in that app. But I've recently come to love Cubasis for a whole different set of reasons. And that's ok. I think anyway.
Well got another crash today. And it deleted the entire project in the process. Again. This happens when going through presets on the internal sounds available, so it's a combination of iOSs RAM handling and Cubasis utterly shitty way of handling crashes. I can take a crash or two, but NOT that it erases the project in the process. This is a behaviour you need to fix ASAP, Steinberg. I don't understand why you've have implemented a crash handling system that you know will delete peoples projects. Please take a look at Auria and learn a thing or two regarding all this.
Hello ChrisG,
Can you reproduce this crash all the time? Is there a way you can give me a step by step guide on how to make it happen? if I can reproduce it, then it can be found and fixed in a maintenance update.
Best regards,
GN
@Chris:i don't think your project is really deleted. When it crashes on my device (still too often on an ipad 4 but i'm using it quite heavy)it it'll open with a blank project saying your old one is"broken"or something. But it always made an automatic snapshot the moment it crashes.I even had one or two project that ALWAYS gave me this "project broken"message when i shutdown cubasis by myself and reopen it.But manually open the saved projects still works. It still has some really annoying bugs but instead they are throwing more and more new features into cubasis that are not necessary to survive (C'mon, who needs/uses micrologue with the beautiful AB integration and all the Synths out there?)Do we ever leave the beta tester status behind us?
iPad 2, iOS 6.1.3. It happens when browsing the various sounds Cubasis comes (Halion sounds, audio loops, Microlouge presets, everything). It behaves exactly like the RAM is filling up, due to browsing, and loading samples in turn. And Cubasis doesn't unload previous loaded presets/samples fast enough when quickly browsing through sounds. That's what it looks like to me. And that's the only way I can describe it and reproduce it.
But either way, you NEVER have your application delete a users projects. There are many ways to avoid that. I'm just going to stop using it for anything more serious until you have a proper redundancy backup system in place.
I for one appreciate the added features in Cubasis. Maybe because I have not experienced the crashes I keep hearing about, which leads me to believe its more than a Cubasis issue. Sometimes I just want to sketch out a song without all of the connections. Micrologue helps in that effort. In the end I think all the bugs will be worked out because Steinberg has been consistently updating.
@crabman , nope this was completely deleted. I could have connected it to a computer and a file browser to have a look, but it was definitely gone from within Cubasis. No new snapshots etc.
Wonder if any of you Cubasis users can tell me if it has an audio timestretch/warp
function.. cant see anything in the manual. To my mind its an absolute necessity for
a modern daw & although Im tempted by the Sale price this would negate me buying.
Regards to all.
jsb: No it doesn't have time stretch. But I'm pretty sure it'll get it. But first It needs fixing (all the above stuff), and after that it needs automation etc so you can record your basic CCs. Then goodies like time stretch etc..
@ChrisG many thanks Chris... will continue to record ipad track by track into Ableton
for now (traitor that I am)
@mgmg4871: regarding"more than a cubasis issue":I'm not new to the whole"what i need to do to create a stable environment for my audio apps".Closing all other apps, device reset/clear Ram,Bluetooht/Wlan off,no Jailbreak (of course),latest iOS etc.Cubasis crashes from time to time no matter what i do.With or without Audiobus (i always use 512 buffer btw). But i'm working on big projects with up to 25-28 tracks.Sometimes projects become more and more unusable when working on them.audiofiles(!!) starting to shift then (or whatever it is,i can't describe it better)and the whole timing get lost.I have to restart cubasis then.Happened way to often...
Well hopefully the new update will fix whatever's causing this. If what they say is true, the audio engine will run 2.5 times more efficient. Lets hope for the best.
2,5 times faster sounds great indeed.Although i can imagine you won't notice it with 24/96.
I'll stick to 16/44 anyway because i record most of my sounds thru audiobus.
It's "up to 2.5x faster." We shouldn't have incorrect expectations, otherwise we'll be disappointed. I would imagine an average performance increase would be probably closer to 50%.
Hello ChrisG,
Thank you for the feedback I have forwarded it to the Dev's.
Best regards,
GN
Thank you GN. Even if you can't get Cubasis to a stable place in a reasonable amount of time, I would strongly advice the devs to look at all the ways projects are handled and make sure Cubasis does not completely wipe a project, no matter what. Keeping projects safe should be priority nr 1 wether it's your $500 Cubase DAW or your $50 Cubasis DAW.
Wtf.
Have not chipped in yet as,since the last update,it worked ok for me,but when I was having these issues,I changed the way I worked.Everything I record in cubasis is converted to audio file/saved and then put in a AUDIOSHARE folder.(midi stuff is put in the folder too)
AS is my hub and where stuff gets saved/ moved onto my Mac and played with in logic.
ipad is great..luv it...but these are still (relatively) early days for ios music.
by the way, there is another nasty undo bug:from time to time pressing undo changes ALL sounds i chosed from the internal library.Did anybody else notice this? It's quite rare but it happened defintely more than one time to me (arround 4-5 times).I really love(ed)Cubasis but now after a couple of weeks in heavy rotation i find more and more annoying showstopper...Not to mention how it sucks how LONG it takes to make an undo...and I still get nervous every time i use undo and and that feels totally wrong.U know, the"undo"option should make feel you save and not the opposite ;-)
Hello ChrisG,
About your previous bug report, I just got a reply. It will be fixed in 1.7
Best regards,
GN
That's great to hear, thank you GN!
While we have Steinberg's attention... can we PLEASE get a comment on the pinch-to-zoom and scroll mechanism in the track editor? It is so hard to use and I would love to know if there are any improvements planned.
Specifically, to fix it, it should:
Hi,
I added it to the list.
