Aurora Sound Studio HD
A while back, when i was considering buying TNR-i, i came across Aurora and while it looked good it hadn't been updated since 2014 and seeing as it was somewhat expensive i forgot about it
Now it's been updated to 64bit though and i'm tempted
Anyone here use it?
What's it like compared to TNR-i or similar apps?
Comments
Don't have it. 30 bucks and no updating put me off. I do like Synergy (by the same mob) and am pleased to see that at least this hasn't gone the way of the 32bit goodbye (as well as updating AB apparently), but it smells like a 'keep alive but keep as is' thing at this point. Would also like to hear from other users....
Yes, that was my line of thinking as well but in light of having to wait to AB3 until monday i caved and bought the bundle
So far i like it but i've only used for 30 minutes. One thing that stood out to me is that it's not a ROMpler but a subtractive synth so you have a much wider range of sound possibilities without bringing in samples
Just thought i'd update this after having played around with it for a couple of months
So the bad first - it's buggy. It crashes from time to time and for some reason the wifi server crashes Aurora unless i use Safari on my mac. It also seems to crash if i disable those tenori visual effects
Only 3 effects total which is not a lot to work with either
Also, there is a bit of menu diving going on here which is clunky and requires some time to learn the ui
Now for the things i like about it
For one it's got what's probably the best way of handling transposing i've seen on iOS. You can simply switch both root note and scale for each block! It's genius and it should be copied by every app that works with blocks/phrases and does transposing. No need to move around notes, you simply create a block, copy it and then change the root and /or scale. Marvellous
The synth is decent too. 2 osc, 1 LFO, fm, a decent selection of waves etc. but the best part here for me is the modulation sequencer which really opens up what you can do with it
There is sample importing too if you're into that kinda thing
While the file exporting from inside the app is limited to the ancient ftp and email, it supports audiobus so it's not that hard to get out
Also, it can export midi files, either from the song mode or recorded as a performance inside the app
All in all i think it's a really good app that could become among the best on iOS with a bit of polishing. For me it easily beats the TNR-i
I agree with the good mr Goodyear that it's likely on maintenance mode but that doesn't even really bother me because what it does well, it does so good that i can forgive the shortcomings
@jn2002dk and don't forget this app first came out in 2010 so very early in iOS music app development.
Yup, it's really very impressive. I always loved the idea of the TNR-i but never clicked with it. I wish i bought this sooner, it does everything i was looking for in TNR-i and so much more. Oh and Synergy from the bundle is no slouch either
But is that necessarily a bad thing? I mean, a product can at some point be considered 'finished', right? It's not a subscription service unless I'm mistaken, so "keeping it alive" (making sure it works on today's systems) is a reasonable service by the developers imho.
Just a theoretical question, not specifically about this product (which I'm not familiar with)...
I really wanted this back in the day, but that day has passed, even at this price. I agree with @brambos that apps can be finished, but it's easy for him to say that when his stuff is tight as a drum. There are so many ways 4pockets apps could have updated to maintain excitement and take advantage of new advances in the platform— just update the look! The screenshots on the App Store page still have the iOS 3 roundy bars for cryin' out loud. The maintenance updates are admirable, but it still inspires little confidence in the future.
I do give them props for having created such a powerful app so early on in the game. It's still tempting after all these years, and it's not like TNR-i has blazed past them since, either. Like a lot of devs, they probably put a ton of time in and the payoff wasn't there to justify additional serious development. @brambos wins again with his laser focus app strategy.
All good points (from all). Must say:

really gets my attention.
Addition: I STILL think it's too much moolah at this point.
My thoughts exactly. Not thinking of @JohnnyGoodyear's post really, but of many where people reject apps solely on the last update date. Unless it's buggy, or missing important features, I don't at all see that automatically as a bad thing. On can take it as a good thing for a finished piece of software. Plus, it's more likely to run on older devices as it seems everything turns toward bloat at some point.
Hahaha.. seriously though, it was not directed at you personally, @JohnnyGoodyear. You just triggered a question I've had for a while.![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
You own Synergy don't you? If so, shouldn't you be able to get it at a reduced price in the bundle? Worth checking for the transposing alone. It's just, it's perfect. I can't believe they got it right in 2010 yet most apps still can't do scalar transposing properly or easily
ditto
Ha - this thread caused me to have fun with a Synergy all over again. I seem to remember commenting at the time of Synergy's launch that I thought it took the best bits from Aurora and Meteor and added them together. Anyway still works fine![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
and how far ahead of its time was Synergy with graphical controller changes per pattern for individual mixer, effect and instrument settings?
Synergy is awesome as well. After getting the bundle i'm really surprised they aren't more popular
@jn2002dk back in the day they were, especially Meteor. I mean you can even add your own samples to custom drum machines in Synergy![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
Another route is to check out the iPhone version, installed on iPad. The iPhone one was first born for windows mobile devices (pocket PC in 2002)
