Through CDM. Interesting that they mention modstep, Elastic Drums, Patterning, Auxy Classic, and Fugue Machine in their Kickstarter.

  • Interesting project. Reminded me of the following video:

  • I know the guy who makes this. Brilliant dude.

  • edited March 2017

Good to know! Maybe we can expect some cool Digital Musicking project involving both AB-compatible apps and the Maker toolkit (Arduino, Raspberry Pi, etc.).
In fact, since Sonic Pi is adding MIDI and OSC, we should get more music projects involving communication between devices.

    Do you have a link?

I hope some day we'll see Sonic Pi on iOS

(MIDI out works on the macOS beta binaries to Patreon backers, but you can always build from source on the supported platforms. OSC has been available for a while, but it remains hidden until Sam is sure it can be taught to a 10 year-old.)

Wouldn’t hold my breath for an iOS version. Sam did answer a query about this, recently, but development is focused on the desktop, for multiple reasons. It’s already neat that we have it on Windows, macOS, and diverse Linux distros. But getting a programming app to work on iOS is a whole other thing. The fact that we have MobMuPlat and PdParty demonstrates that it can be done, but the Sonic Pi project is quite different from Pure Data.

So, my hope is more about using protocols like OSC and MIDI to connect Sonic Pi on the desktop with iOS devices. Did work out a way to control SPi through TouchOSC and that was great fun. Haven’t tried the opposite direction but it should be as much fun to control iOS MIDI-enabled apps through Sonic Pi (and/or sensors on GPIO ports).

  • I love this kind of stuff. Not to detract from what looks like a brilliant bit of kit but I was in a 'band' that did stuff like this in the early nineties via MIDI controllable lighting dimmer packs. They are essentially a bunch of electrical outlets which can be turned on or off (and anywhere in between) via MIDI commands. Quick search tells me that most of these dimmer packs have gone the way of DMX but surely there are converters out there. Or used MIDI dimmer packs for dirt cheap.

You seem to know everyone doing interesting musical things in Germany. :) Do you know Oliver Wittchow of Nanoloop fame by chance? If so, can you convince him to get on the bus please? Danke.

You got the quintessential Arduino project, right there.

Exactly. This specific kit is particularly slick (though it sounds like it requires some assembly). But there are much cheaper ways to do much of the same thing with an Arduino (or Raspberry Pi) and some actuators. You can probably pull it off with a breadboard, not needing any soldering.

But, then again, buying a kit like this can save some time. Which is why someone backed the project after seeing it on my Facebook feed. Wouldn’t buy one myself, at this point. But can certainly understand why somebody would.

What’s funny is that the Digital Making world is slowly merging with the Mobile Music Making one, including our beloved iOS apps. The increase of Raspberry Pi posts on PalmSounds is a sign of the times.

Speaking of links about MIDI in Sonic Pi, Robin Newman has just released some code and associated video about getting MIDI in SP through OSC.

Native support for MIDI in would be useful (we’re already getting native MIDI out support). But it’s already very nice to have ways to interact with SP through external devices…

…including iOS ones. To me, with MIDI support in AB3, part of the strength of AB-savvy apps is in integrating multiple devices in a broader “ecosystem”. Like Pure Data, Sonic Pi can be part of this.

Thanks for the links, I'll check them out.

I'm interested in generative music so if Sonic Pi could do MIDI out, I'd be thrilled. Hook it to Mainstage, your iOS music apps or some desktop VST plugins, and you don't really need anything else.

It's a shame there's nothing like Sonic Pi on iOS. I found a way to send OSC messages with a Python script running in Pythonista, but you need a desktop computer or RPi to convert OSC to MIDI.
