So yes, I got a bit overexcited but forgot that Air 2 already has 2Gb Ram. Ah well, apparently it also has that hollow LCD (Air 1) so miserably noisy to tap.

    PASS

  • If it had less than the iPhone SE it would be weird...

  • What a surprise!!!!!!!!!...except not really... jajaja. Seriously why you ever doubted it had less than 2GB of RAM? It's has real multitasking, if it had only 1GB of RAM it would only have slide over like the Air 1 has, and here i thought ipad musicians would know all these technical things (maybe some normal people using their ipad to browse in safari but not us) 2 GB of RAM its the minimum now.

As for the screen... yeah.... but come on... its the cheap ipad... you dont reach $329
and keep profit without cutting some corners...

  • Pretty hard deal to pass up for iPad 1 owners, looking to leapfrog the Air 2 in the queue of supported devices. Also, with the processor and a whole 2 gigs of ram, I should have about double the CPU - which is very helpful when you are an Auria user :+1:

I didn't think that it would have less than 2Gb, I was hoping it would be 4!!!

As for the price the tech gets cheaper all the time. The multinationals always find way to squeeze more blood out of workers in poorer countries. There's also automatisation of production. Just look how much was computer tech 20 years ago.;)

  • Out of interest, do the volume buttons line up with an Air 1 or Air 2 or neither? Same with the speaker and mic holes - in line with either of those, or in new positions altogether? And the magnets.

I'm wondering if they're forcing the scrapping of old cases, having purchasers to go to the expense of new cases altogether again. I think one of the big unspoken manufacturing wastages these days is in so many revisions and variations of new cases and covers for devices.

  • @u0421793

Would have to load images of all the latest versions into photoshop and overlap them with different transparencies. I might do that if I find a minute.

My shed is full of old cheep Ipad/iPhone cases. I don't buy premium ones because they change form factor too often but I do realise that this leads to me not caring about throwing them in the bin eventually rather than trying to resel them on ebay,

    It's not good.

    Right out of the box:

    There's no switch for mute/sound.

    the speaker grills are different.

The microphones are in a different position.

You could use your Air 1 case on the new iPad but you'll have a useless hole on the side, the microphones covered by the case and the speaker grills partially covered by the case as well.

This is an iPad Air/ iPad Air 2 hybrid.

Here's is the thing... if it wasn't for the added thickness the new iPad would fit perfectly on an iPad Air 2 case.

It's funny how Apple has changed the form factor of the iPad on each generation. There's no case that fits two iPad models perfectly.

Only on the mini (2 and 3 generation) that has happened and it did because the mini 3 was super boring.

  • I'm guessing Apple's design team are trying to prove their worth. If they didn't change things around someone in the management might think they spend their days drinking coffee and discuss latest developments in Age of Empires.

  • The new iPad is depressingly close to what I would have liked in a cheap iPad. It has a slightly bigger battery and slightly more processing power. It does without the keyboard connector and pen use that don't really interest me. The UK price is better, although no where near as good as the US price.

On the other hand though, the battery is only giving the same battery life roughly, most likely due to the older and to my mind disappointing screen used. The lack of the new 4 speaker tech is also personally preferred for film watching, so while I can live without pens and keyboards, I would have loved the new speakers.

Will be interesting to see if they release a new Pro range, if they keep the older models current too and have a 3 tier price point. At this moment in time, my own weighing up of the iPad offerings is as follows:

New iPad: does not offer enough compared to the price Air2 128gb models can be had for. UK price is not that much of a bargain and feels like 'here have some old tech now that we have upped the UK iPad prices.

Pro range: UK price hike has made me question more what I'm paying for that I would not use. I have very little interest in pen or keyboard use t the prices they are charging for them. The other features offered like higher processor is fine, but only 2gb of RAM in the 9.7 was disappointing.

Only personal preferences, but at the end of the day, it's my money if I ever choose to spend it. My opinion at the moment is that Apple have not found the sweet spot for myself that the Air2 found 2 years ago.

Aha, that's interesting. What about the back camera? Lining up with position of Air 1 or 2, or neither?

I'm curious about this. Is it really a different price than in the US or is there a difference in the tax situation? In China all Apple stuff is quite expensive, but if you look at the tiny print on the Chinese Apple site you see that once you remove the Chinese "VAT" that the prices are really close (due to day to day exchange rate fluctuations). In the US the actual price may be nearly 10% higher than what the list price due to sales tax ( which varies from state to state).

Yes there are tax variations to take into account in the US. The change though is easy to see without the different state taxes being taken into account. The UK prices used to always be at least close to the exchange rate. Now the UK prices are much higher than the exchange rate. Now bearing in mind that the exchange rate has got slightly worse for the pound since the Brexit vote, it's easy to see that it's not just that fact that constitutes the increase in prices.

  • No, tax is only a tiny fraction of the price difference. Stuff truly is a lot cheaper in the US than in Europe. Australia and Brazil have it even worse (although in Brazil ridiculous import taxes are to blame).

  • @MrNezumi

I would say that Apple prices are slowly creeping up around most of the world except for America. I do not have all the facts and figures to back that statement up, but it does seem that way from only needing a cursory glance at different Apple sites around the world.

Probably comes down to the almighty worship of 'Growth' in business. Apple if honest, needs more new markets to keep growth to keep its stock holders happy. No new major markets at the moment. All it's markets either close to saturation or shrinking year on year. So the prices go up to keep the stock holders happy. Hence Apple broadening into relatively cheaper end markets. What they really desperately need is totally new markets. Will they be able to make them?

  • Prices are OK in Japan. It depends on the exchange rate. Last year the yen was high so the new MBPs came out cheaper than in the US.

Indeed. Never used an air2 or pro so I don't know about this new screen type I'll be not missing. :)

Me either neither, except I have touched my wifes ipad pro a few times, when she lets me. lol... I can tell the screen is, visually much clearer than my air 1, I think? Other than that, I don't know what I am missing, cuz I don't get to use it.

Yep, I'm fond of my Air 1 screen - and I'd be much fonder to see my CPU usage in Auria cut nearly in half behind that screen
