  • My Minibrute satisfies all of the analog cravings I get. I think it's kind of the perfect foil for all of the amazing iOS synths.

Not likely going to happen anytime soon, but I'm very much excited about going back to hardware. I'll still use iOS for recording & editing, but I'm looking at knobby, stand-alone musical instruments quite fondly. Maybe, before the year is over, I'll order a Minilogue & VocaSample?

I like the minilogue and also looked hard qt the monologue. Of those two i do prefer the mini. The monologue has better keys. Had thought if picking up a volca sample again. Had one for a while and paired with the volca kick it would make a nice kick ass rhythm section. But i find it hard to justify samplers with what we know you can do with patterning, for example. Although the realtime knob twiddling is cool i can only do so much at a time and patterning automates way better.

Patterning can midi control a volca sample wonderfully though. It's one of my fav things to do. Since patterning can send each layer to a different midi channel. Perfect for the sample.

But to what purpose if it's just samples why not just bring those into patterning? The other volcas make more sense to me for this.

Funny you mention the volca kick as I was thinking that would be my next volca purchase down the road.

This is the video that pushed me off the fence

Theres days when i think of going way the other direction and selling everything except for my ukuleles, and buying a bunch of ukuleles. Then i mindslap myself and know i need da kine.

    Solid da kine use, cahz.

  • The thing I'm finding with modern synth hardware and the current crop of iOS sequencers is that recall is really really hard. Obviously, with presetless analog synths it was never easy. But I own a few analogs with presets and/or patch-dump (via sysex) capabilities but few iOS sequencers support midi program change and none that I'm aware support track-header sysex dumps. This sort of thing was really normal in sequencers of yesteryear.

I mostly just have a good time playing my analog stuff. I capture live jams that never go anywhere. Sometimes I use them as audio sources in ios projects that develop but mostly just fun. Expensive fun. Even expensive is relative though; four of us went to see a kids movie last night. $70 with popcorn and shared drinks!

Ahh i have two. A not so great soprano and a pretty nice tenor. Not playing it too much these days but not going anywhere. This a uke central song i did.

Nice! The first set of songs here ("Bluebird") is all tenor uke, an sh-101 and found objects for "drums". http://bridgeportmusic.com/ Oh, there's a xylophone on one of them too.

Hey !! Really like the first few songs (as far as i have gone). Quirky movie stuff. Will slowly get through the other stuff.

Could not sell mine - love my hardware and IOS synths

    Very cool. What are those?

  • Whoops sorry re last post. MFB Dominion 1, DSI Pro 2 and a Samson Graphite 49 to play the IOS Synths. Beatstep Pro, Zoom MS70CDR. Also Moog mf101 low pass filter, EH Talking machine and Red Panda Particle delay out of site on the floor. Tascam DP24 multitrack recorder. PC does have VST's but I don't use them much. It's all synced to run midi clock from either the beatstep or the Tascam.

  • Oh and the guitar is a Fender Squier Venus - my wife plays the guitar - can't leave that out!

  • Thank you @vpich.

Yum. Do you mix with the DP24 as well? How long does it take to boot up? I bought a used VS2480 last year hoping to use it as a multi-track+mixer but it takes like 3 minutes to boot. Since everything was plugged in through it, I couldn't hear anything until then. Drove me nuts and I yanked it. Still like the idea of going back to a dedicated hardware multi-tracker though. That Bluebird album I linked above was recorded on an old Boss BR8 8-track, then bounced to a computer for more tracks/mixing, but there's something liberating about having a dedicated recording machine. That Boss had a particularly handy feature for capturing songs: built in beat machine. It was cheesy as hell but worked perfectly for 'I have an idea and need a beat to keep time' with absolutely zero fuss.

  • Yea I mix using the DP24 - no boot up issues - I use it because I am just not a fan of using DAWS or PC's in my music. Not because I think they are bad or anything but I just don't enjoy the process with them. I like to just play and I use computers a lot in my work and using them in my music somehow kills my enjoyment.

If one is a tactile/kinesthetic learner, (common for musicians) the glass interface sometimes doesn't quite satisfy. Mmmmm: shaped objects, with textures, movement, weight. Sometimes nothing else will do.

I do love drawing in automation with my finger though

Makes perfect sense: Nothing quite as tactile and directly expressive as finger painting (the plus for me here, drawing automation curves, or using the art app Procreate, is not having to touch wet paint. I might be tactile but I'm not a fan of paint on skin. Pet peeve).

I'm patiently waiting to have £140 spare to get one of those...so far I have saved up £1.78...must stop buying apps :D
