The Audiobus Remote Update!
So now that AB3 is here (woohoo!) and we've all handed over our cash (if not, why not?) my curiosity is finally piqued, my investment tangible and my anticipation is building towards the AB:R compatibility update!
Are there going to be any significant/notable new features for AB:R to herald in this new era, or should we just expect a quick compatibility update out of the gate? ( @Sebastian )
The feature I'm talking about of course, is a 'Display in Audiobus Remote' toggle.
Previously it was workable to offload apps that weren't desirable to show (or ones that take up half the screen even when minimised such as Sector) into AUM, but now with the new features as well as AU and MIDI apps, things are going to get pretty crazy (and by crazy, I mean TINY!). Compounding this, it's now much more desirable to host a greater proportion of apps in Audiobus itself. Many of these will be MIDI or sound generator apps, or apps operated by an external device which don't need to be accessed in performance.
Audiobus Remote takes a central role in my live performance, so it's future is an extremely interesting topic for me! I'd also like to take a moment to express that incorporating external AU controls and fast switching into AB:R (which I'm assuming will happen in order to keep the experience uniform across all app types) is already a HUGE new feature and boost to the utility of Audiobus/Audiobus Remote.
Thanks again to Sebastian and the Audiobus team. You guys work is in inspired and you're leading the way.

Yeah, AB Remote is more useful than ever with more and more apps being used at the same time. The obvious things we're going to fix are that Audio Unit Extensions are visible in it. But we're also thinking about adding the Mixer to the AB Remote UI.
And of course MIDI learn for the device that runs AB Remote. But that's further in the future.
Those are all things that I was thinking but didn't mention (didn't want to dilute the purpose of the post) but was silently hoping for. Thanks and it's exciting news!
The addition of AU to Audubus Remote alone, is going to be one of the most significant performative leaps forward (Audiobus itself being back end) in a long while for iOS.
I'm a little wary of the ramifications for usability in performance of a huge amount more apps being hosted in Audiobus (I probably host 30% of my live apps in AB2, in AB3 I'm expecting a much higher proportion) but your team and vision has 100% of my trust. I'm sure that if any usability issues present themselves in the process then they'll be addressed in the most proactive and forward thinking way.
Audio Unit Extensions are really quite reliable, so a setup with a few MIDI controllers, lots of AUX audio generators and effects and one app to record it all into should not be too taxing on newer devices.
Ah this isn't really what I'm talking about.
I was discussing how small (microscopically tiny) the AB:R icons are going to become once you include all the extra AU's and 'background only' apps (and maybe MIDI apps too?) that were previously hosted in AUM (for AU necessity, auto loading or AB:R space conservation) but may now be more suitable to host in AB3. It's a phenomenal tool for performance but it's already a battle to keep it's UX usable for live work.
Thanks for the quick response by the way. I'm sure today must be a crazy day!
Ah, I get it. Yeah, we might allow you to hide apps entirely at some point. But I don't want to get ahead of myself.
Cool, cheers!
Just saying, this will be nice to bring to AB Remote (If Possible)... SNAPSHOTS... with Morph.
Surprised that many are not going Gaga over ABR... Or maybe I came late to the party..
It’s nothing less than magic, especially running ABR on a separate device, switches for AU effects, TOUCH to bring up an Instrument/effect for easy editing... Apps like Patterning has its patterns (One can control from ABR)... Anyway, I think a snapshot/song mode would be a great addition with the pending release of Xequence for AB...
Loving this AB workflow... Thanks..
Does anyone know of a good video that shows how to set up ABR on a second device for controlling apps on another device? I feel like I need that ABR transport in order to stop having to switch between apps with the Home button which seems so clunky to me.
Agree
This is really great using a second device for abr
Would be great if this received a but more love
But i think the apps it controls need to integrate it more...
Anyway i love abr also
No Videos needed.. it’s easy as 1, 2, 3..
But videos are welcomed..😎
More Goodness..
Edit... Sector App..
I always load SECTOR as IAA in AUM because even when minimised, it's maaaaasive ABR footprint remains massive and makes everything else tiny.
Has anyone heard anything about whether the Mixer functionality will be added to AB Remote anytime soon? I'm sorting of waiting for this before grabbing ABR. It would also be good if we could view in ABR the % of processor used in AB3 just to keep an eye on things over there.
Pretty sure these AB wizards can come up with solutions....
I won't mind dedicating my iPad mini and iPhone to running ABR... with AB3 running apps on my iPad Pro..
