    greetings chicks n roosters,
heres some kind of ruckus..( beat hawk gadget harmonica and vino )..

Good wailing there Sir. A nice collection of sounds you've got herded up in the band....sounds very fluid. One particular noise, can't identify it, maybe like a single string of some kind, but it runs as melody/counterpoint throughout, sounds a little more quantized or perfect than the rest, sufficiently so that in a place or two, especially in the higher register rather than the lower, it stands out just a little to me. Not wrong by any means, but just not as smoky and languid (in a happy good way) as the rest of the band.....very small note or quibble is all. Enjoyed it.

The Fabs/Microwarmer really give meat, breadth and depth, to Gadget here. A well chosen collection of sounds. Not precisely my beverage of choice, a certain branch of the funk tree I've never climbed too well, but here and there I could feel a the shadow of Scritti and would have liked the words that go along with that too (but who can sing like that anyway...?).

I do think (probably) that your choice of title has caused me to think about how the piece, as a whole, does seem to stutter forward a little, not in the sense of rhythm, but just maybe I was waiting for it to further bloom along the way. Sorry, not making the best or most constructive of sense. Maybe with this notion in mind I should add that you introduce a new sound towards the end that feels exactly right, but maybe a further change in the bassline at some point might have driven it on towards resolution, but now I'm all over the place and certainly past my own (musical) ability's purview....Good effort.

  • Ah, that's a very helpful listen mr Goodears... I like that stringy thang but YES it's like the one guy in the band who swore off the bottle.. if I dive back into that dingy saloon I be sure to loosen that string ! ( or aim him to the techno cellar ) .
    Cheers, b

Cheers for the feedback, Mr Goodyear. Yes, it's a tad 'oblique' (construction wise), which is intended, also Gadget makes anything other than the long scene approach tricky to do otherwise. On the subject of 'the funk', I've been listening to a lot of Parliament / Funkadelic recently, but this is more 'machine funk' than the real stuff :)

I hear you, but I think that's one of the things I find interesting and good about your piece. I don't think of Gadget as funky and probably because of its very mechanistic one-bit-after-another approach, it's especially too easy or unconsciously tempting to repeat, repeat, repeat with the layout as is (which is where I guess the addition of audio might help a little), but this piece straddles that line well, but feels as though it could also take a step further.

One of the 'problems' -for me- with Gadget is that it's almost too easy to develop a series of connected and elegant pieces that one then feels reluctant to 'mess' up....as ever, I've started out critiquing something as honestly as I can manage and ended up talking about my own problems (Doctor).... :)

@JohnnyGoodyear pretty cool and left-field spoken word track. Musically it's a very nice mashup of the symphonic strings and the more contemporary bleeps and bloops which I think works exceptionally well.

The "precursor" vocals are a nice touch, you can't quite make them out but then the main vocal comes in like a clearer echo to clarify what you were straining to hear.

And the words are great as always, and in parts are very funny. Generally I'm not that into spoken word pieces but this one has a lot going for it and is entertaining to listen to.

Thanks Mister R. Appreciate the nod. Especially as while I'm more fond of the spoken word than the yodeled one (in terms of my own stuff), I know that it's not so much your own cup of tea, relatively anyway. Or within the confines of this fine club perhaps. I get that.

I should add that I have heard rumours (in their full English spelling) that you have at last reacquainted yourself with your recently absent guitar object. There has been much speculation lately (down behind the bike sheds; we don't smoke anymore, but it's just a comfortable habit we have) as to what your next offering will be....only 30 days in April....

Yes after 8 months of living in holiday lets we have finally, at the fourth time of trying, bought another house. I won't bore you with the details but it was in all honesty one of the maddest experiences of my life, the system in England is beyond broken - we ended up exchanging and completing on the same day, and it's crazy to think that in the morning anyone could still pull out, and yet by the evening we had moved in.

So after 8 months in storage I got my gear back. My two guitars were very much on my mind the whole time so I spent the first few evenings just noodling on the Les Paul. My microphone collection is still sitting in a box somewhere waiting to be unpacked, and due to everything that's going on I am very short of spare time. We also thought it would be a great time to get a puppy as our dog died last October, so we have Coco, an 8 week old cocker spaniel who has just arrived, she adds another rather delicious layer of chaos.

So my plan this month (and possibly for the next few months) is to revisit some older tracks that had potential but weren't quite there. I haven't actually done anything done anything at all yet, but we are only just half way through the month :)

  • @richardyot Brilliant and congrats. Time for the next chapter and all that it brings (like a Coco Spaniel for example).

I like the idea of revisiting previous tunes and producing a better/other version. Not something one could really apply on a specific month to everyone (all being on a different point of the creative timeline), but something I have been thinking of as well. An opportunity to get beyond the well, if I were to really do this one again... point of compromise (as far as one ever gets past that...)....looking forward to seeing which you choose and what you do with it.

  • @richardyot Nice one boss and many congratulations on finding a new home with a smiling Coco attached. :) Perfect. And yes, the wife wants to have a pop at singing her bits in 'My Library' again, (knitting needles to be locked away, just in case it's The Turn), so could be following your lead soon. Great idea.

  • My entry for this month:

  • @bootsy, nice acoustic guitar tone - what's the guitar/mic you used? The vocal harmony is also flawless, congratulations. Loved the background guitar melody with volume effect. This is ready for commercial release: well done!

  • @trackedout, another of your raw songs i learned to enjoy. This one has an early Panic in The Disco feel - perhaps it was the funk guitar or the brassy sounds. Great vocals! Thumbs up!

+1 Congrats, mate. I <3 Cocker Spaniels -- very loving and affectionate. I grew up with a lot of dogs (mostly Cocker Spaniels, English Bulldogs, and Chinese Shar-Pei. The amount of poop I scooped in my youth cannot be measured by modern science.

Our previous Cocker (The one who sadly passed away last year) had a litter of puppies 11 years ago, so I might not be far behind you in the picking up poop department. We had a six month old (human) baby and five Cocker pups all at the same time. Poo was a big factor in my life that summer.

Thank you @theconnactic! The acoustic is a Taylor 414 ce. And mics are Rode nt5's on the guitar in xy and the vocals are on a studio projects C1. Thanks for the comments.
    Cheers,

  • really awesome song

Very nice picking sir! Cool song, love the blend of synth and drum machine with the classical riffing. Mix in a little funky strat, and some nice video shots. Great job!

  • Thank you very much, @Bootsy!

  • Nine days left. Little more than a week. April is the cruelest month after all...

  • @serosin Only listen to anything Gadget through this Club, and from that limited exposure, this sounds different. Ungadget, if you like (to me) and it's cool, edgy. You're another clever bugger who achieves baggy bass drum skin status, which is my favourite... Tin hats, tight and trashy, are opposite in pitch (or wtf it's called) etc, and that is wonderful. The contrast works so well. Unexpected stabby rhythm alert at a min. Those hits were close to causing bruising to the Temples, and appealed, of course. Dancy, eerie, original. Nice one. :)

Have fun and looking forward to your feedback as well.

Perfect soundtrack for the kids getting dolled up in the back room. They're loving it by the way, and your stuff is getting em in the mood to party hard. Thumping bass drum slap down the middle (that can be felt) with splatterings of teasing clicks and flicks on either side. Tight as you like production and does exactly as you say, and have tagged on your song. The 136 bpm tag.....Is that a detail specific to dance music? Do the punters check such things? Interested in a tempo hashtag. Never thought of that. Anyway, I enjoyed your sound euphoria, and the kids also. :)

  • Title: You Will Be Fine.

My project. I think I've made a nice slow beat piano tune. Used my Korg Microstation and recorded it in GarageBand. Added some strings, voice, etc, etc. I think the voice sounds good, technically speaking (that is: compared to previous work). Not as good as some of you here. I use iPad microphone, hard to get rid of the noise. Only a few lines sung.

  • Loved the song, @Marcel! I am not a fan of vocals heavily soaked in delay or reverb, but it goes well with your vocal tone somehow. Did you use Hokusai to clean the noise? If you haven't told us, I'd never have guessed you used the built-in mic. Thumbs up!

  • edited April 2017

Hey thanks very much, @theconnactic! Great you liked it! :) No I didn't used Hokusia (haven't heard of it, but just googled it, is it a good app to filter noise?). I recorded the voice in Garageband and tweaked the settings (eq etc) of it in Garageband, and than I copied the voice only track to Audio Mastering and tweaked it there, pasted it back to GB (think I tweaked it again in GB) and finally mastered the complete song in Audio Mastering.

  • Hokusai has a wave profiling type noise reduction algorithm, and I found it almost as good as Waves' offerings in this field. In fact, it reminds me of good old Sonic Foundry Noise Reduction plug-in.

    Hey there
thanks for your compliments. The kick is way too heavy. I noticed when checking on my speakers, terrible mixing mistake. Made a new version which is more balanced. But glad you like it.
136 is bpm often used fo uplifting trance, either 136 or 138.

And just when I thought Mister Cohen had left us for good....this starts out/feels very much like Uncle Lenny. As noted, good work with the vocals/mic, irrespective of where it was recorded...I still think you should save your pennies and get something external. You vocals/words deserve it. Very lonesome sounding song, drenched in wist, which has long been a favorite sonic perfume of mine. Good stuff.

  • edited April 2017

Thanks @JohnnyGoodyear ! :) Well, I have something external (a Samsung C01 Condenser mic) which I could use....I gave it a try in the past, but the setup was too timeconsuming (and I am lazy) (and I think I was not convinced that its better than ipad). But now I have a mixer with fantom power so I can give it another try more easily, and judge it again. Only thing against it is my laziness  I have a short timespan of inspiration, and when I have to do all kind of stuff with the mic to sing, blah, blah, blah....in short I am lazy. Thanks for your kind words, only thing is that I didn't understood the word 'wist', googled it, but that didn't help, perhaps the word is meant to be short for 'wistful thinking' but thats a guess. Thanks anyway!

@igneous1, when I saw your song, before clicking on the widget, I thought I was in the wrong thread, the Covers Club one - because Strutter is the name of one of my favorite songs by one of my favorite rock bands, Kiss, and I've seen no other song sharing this name. Well, of course it was not a cover, but a nice original song. I liked the choice of timbres, specially the drums, which sounded very nice. Well mixed as well. Congrats!
