TF7 or FM4?

In the market for a new FM synth to fiddle with tonight. Which should I get? Have tried the free TF7 so I know it sounds good already.

  • Both good, but TF7 ventures into more uncharted waters, if such venturing is your thing

It certainly is. There was once a time I though a raw sawtooth wave could sustain me forever...

  • I couldn't live without either.

  • TF7 if you buy the IAPS and if you have a decently powerful device. You can turn down the quality setting, but on high, it sucks power like no tomorrow! Lol

  • O and don't forget Phasemaker as an option if you don't already have it.

Got it, thanks. Gonna go with TF7 since I really like TF8.

  • I made the right choice. The layout of the 'Tone' page is awesome and simple.

  • TF7 And FM4 are great synths but indeed there are alternatives like DXi fm synthesizer and the excellent phasemaker (very complet) And fm essential Yamaha. There are perhaps more fm synth in the AppStore (FM6 , Baervaag ,cassini , frums) . Would be cool to have more retro synth like Roland D50 for example

D50's magic was basically "short transient sample" + "sustained synth tone" + nice envelopes. You could pretty easily cook that up in Layr, iM1 or iWavestation.

  • I see the OP has decided, but for the sake of posterity FM4 hasn't been updated in a year and a half, and the developer seems to have moved on to Reason rack extensions.

Another nod here for Phasemaker, too. I had an extended play recently and it's really good.

  • DXi is not too shabby either.

  • If only TF7 had midi out. Such an expressive device. I wrote to the dev and he said that it wasn't likely to happen, but that the new app he was working on would have midi out. Which turned out to be TF8, which doesn't quite have the same play-feel, but that might be because it's not dedicated to iPad yet.

Yes. This bugs me. It's a great synth but iOS is my only option as they don't offer a vst/au option. I hope it gets an update soon. As it is it still works fine however.

  • I've made a few patches for PhaseMaker and have to say, it has one major advantage over the others for myself. That being AU. PhaseMaker patches can work really well layered

  • Unsurprisingly, nobody's mentioned Sunvox yet.

  • I've really enjoyed TF8 and as a consequence downloaded TF7 on My iPad mini
But I'd Love to go deeper in TF7 now, so... So far no crackles...
Regarding TF7 IAPS, which ones should I grab to expand the possibilities?
    Thks for your wise advices
    Appoholickly yours,

1 & 2 are all you need. I got 3 (chaos arpeggiator, cuz why not) as well. I'd say 4 & 5 are unessential because they are just preset packs.

  • Thanks a lot for your answer, oat_phipps !

However they are really good presets though, should you get tired of baking your own noises in FM land. Mr. Lim knows his stuff. :-)

  • To muddy the waters, FM4 gets a vote for my favorite FM synth for ios. I like the vibe of the presets, which, with the complexity of FM synth patch making, is handy. There are lots of playble, simple keyboard sounds, as opposed to dense, wacky spaceship sounds, which can happen in preset libraries, when people are trying to make a synth seem impressive.
