iConnectAudio users poll: tech issues?

What do you think - has iConnect worked out for you? Is it worth it? Please feel free to add some details of your experience.

Other than Studiomux (plus interface for audio in/out), there doesn't seem to be a very compelling alternative for connecting to a DAW. The dock stations don't seem great either. But I see so many different issues with iConnect in regard to iOS updates, firmware updates, now the AB3 update, and so on. Really don't want to end up with hours of troubleshooting... I've heard the iConfig routing software isn't great, but that's not a deal breaker as long as it works.

  • Still gets the thumbs up from me as a owner of both the Audio4+/Midi4+. I've been gigging with it, for iOS keys and general mixing, since it was released.

  • AB3 gives me major show stopping issues but when they get resolved I'll vote works perfectly.

  • I keep thinking about buying one but then I think well StudioMux does this and I already have it. Is the iConnect better?

  • Freaking love mine!

  • i have midi2+ that i never use because i have the ica2+. once i got the routing down in the software it has been flawless.

  • I have 2. The only issues I had really were with the iconfig software and Windows which is now resolved. Iconfig for iOS could do with an update too. But they work great and use them everyday.

  • i pretty much use my Ica4+ every single day. its permanently attached to my desktop and when i'm at home my ipad is used to transform midi and send to my pc. also all my ios apps directly pipe into ableton. i know some people get confused with all the audiorouting but once you learn it properly its as simple as routing audio inside a daw itself.
i can safely say i cannot work without it anymore. next to zero latency midi and audio between 2 devices is a godsend.

  • I really want to like my Audio 2+, but having to reboot the ipad every time I plug it in, sometimes more than once, just isn't doing it for me, sadly. If this is a basic firmware issue and they get it sorted, then it will be a fantastic product, so I'll keep it for a little while, but I'm more inclined just to head straight into Studiomux at the moment. :(

  • No issues with mine. I was an early adopter, and definitely went through some of it's initial growing pains - but I use it live all the time and definitely don't know of any other device that does what it does to keep my live rig simple. I needed something that could route audio and midi between 2 iPads, as well as midi from multiple controllers, while keeping my ipads charged.

The iConfig software could definitely use some UI/UX help, and I'd imagine any new user still has to figure out how to best get everything set up - but I rarely touch iConfig anymore,

pretty much the same situation with me. my default template is saved to my interface permanently so i barely ever have to reroute stuff again in iconfig. and i've tinkered with iconfig so much at this point that rerouting takes me a few seconds if i want to do some pretty complex routing. its just the initial learning curve that is hella steep. but once you get used to it its pretty easy to do exactly what you want.

    +1
Several early Firmware updates have helped smooth it out quite a bit for me. Use it everyday. The "unplug it" reboot is required occasionally to fix connections.

  • Does anyone else use the powered hub in the host port for extra midi controllers, with their ICA4+? I have to unplug and replug mine every single time power up, or reset, or save my settings in the ICA4 to flash memory (which makes it reboot), or the iconnect won't talk to the hub, none of the controllers show up. Def a problem with the iconnect, but am wondering if a different hub would change things.

Other than that I like mine, and use it for making music with two ipads. It works like it says for that. I bought a 2nd awfully expensive lightning cable, and love that it charges both ipads while you play.

Actually don't even need a powered hub in that socket. using an unpowered i've connected a Novation Remote Zero SL, An M-audio Keystation 88es, 2 Keith Mcmillan K-boards and an Maudio Midisport X1. Never need to replug. the hub is basically permanently attached.

  • Thanks for your input everyone. This seems pretty close to what I've gathered from reading some reviews and general discussion around the web... it's a great device, but there are still about 20% of people who are completely put off by its quirky behavior.

Honestly, that's almost enough to keep me from buying one. I understand they are a small company and leading the way with a very useful product... but all the glitchiness, guesswork and unplugging/rebooting is obviously something I'd like to avoid (especially since the reason I would buy this product is to streamline my workflow, more than it is a pure necessity).

Maybe I will see how they sort everything with Audiobus 3 and decide based on that.
