The thing is:
I was happy to join the game as a shameless self publicity and the ability to find some interesting iOS related stuff but....
I have to say that from the first moment it smacked to me of 'who has more friends on Facebook or people buying followers on other social platforms. So ok, we all follow each other on YouTube which will do what?
I'm also thinking. What if I don't like much what the particular person uploads? What if it is just not my kind of thing.
I've had my steady trickle of people following my channel and I'm absolutely happy with that happening mostly organically, sometimes out of nowhere. Now I will not know if the next person who's subscribed has an actual genuine interest in what I do or have they done it because of this thread? I kinda prefer the former.

Don't know for sure, but number of subscribers could affect your placing in the search results, as YouTube could assume its popular content and give it a higher priority. Google does something similar with websites that have a lot of links to them.
Don't know for sure, but it all helps. I have another channel and it's completely buried when searching, and a whole load of unrelated rubbish comes up first, presumably as I don't have many hits or subscribers to that one.

This. The (manifest) goal, alas inspired by @OscarSouth's Twitter thread, is to help a fellow iOS musician and Audiobus forum user to get a stronger presence on Youtube. The difference between this and "buying followers" on Soundcloud etc. is that what we're doing doesn't require money (which would end up benefitting only a few) but just goodwill (which can benefit potentially everyone that participates).
