Gadget Challenge: Abu Dhabi

I was just listening to AfroDJMac's latest podcast and they talked about constraints in music making. The notion of only using 1 sample to compose a song sounded interesting.

So I thought I'd offer up the challenge to the Audiobus Family.

Challenge:
Using Korg Gadget to compose a song made only with 1 sample using the Abu Dhabi Gadget.

Some guidelines:
. You can only use 1 sample
. You can use as many instances of the Gadget using the same sample
. Post final track to SoundCloud and post here
. Feel free to share your Gadget Scene
. If you use Gadget on desktop, exploit that as well
. Have fun and make something fun

Deadline is April 10 at 6PM PST

Cheers,
-policarpo

  • Cool idea. Abu Dhabi has a 10 sec sample limit, so it's a bit like only using an emu sp1200 (which also had 10 sec sampling time).
If you prepare the right sample (kicks, snare, hat, bass, lead, etc) you can come a long way. Combined with some pitch automation.

I like these minimal challenges. 10 April deadline is a bit short for me though.

What do you mean by that?

If you want to share the composition file, post it for others to open and explore B)

  • This Is posible?

  • Love stuff like this.

Is that in the spirit of this? Seems like loading the deck a bit!

Same. I like working quickly but life... Looking forward to hearing the outcomes though.

Did cross my mind. But if someone picks a sample with a similar combination of sounds it would give the same benefit. I don't know.

Only allowing to use one of the factory sounds would be the most fair solution. But also more boring.

  • So that's a good point. Let's only use stock samples of Abu Dhabi

  • Stock samples only. I'm down

    constraint comment removed--------

  • Why can't we use any of the presets? I was gonna try some of those vocal ones

  • OK....let's remove that constraint :)

Love stuff like this. I'm going to try to put something together.

Just to check - the only constraints are:

    *Only Abu Dhabi
*Only stock samples that come with Abu Dhabi

    Is that right?

  • Cool. Yep that is correct. Looking forward to it.

I'll be the first and set the bar low...

    • 7 instances of Abu Dhabi
    • All stock samples*
    • No MIDI controllers used - just played the ipad
    • Light mixing and mastering in Ableton Live but no other processing

*A slight cheat. Abu Dhabi has major restrictions when it comes to playing sustained notes. You have to begin with samples that are sustained and there aren't many melodic sustained samples. I needed a sustained bass sound so I sampled an Abu Dhabi bass sound, and hacked a sustained sound in Samplr then re-imported into Abu Dhabi. Hence the crappy bass sound.

  • Ecamburn!

Nice work. I love the percussive elements of the piece. There are some really nice things going on in the piece and could definitely be extracted to build into another piece.

I hope to be posting my version later tonight.

    Thanks for the contribution! B)

Here's where I ended up. Used 8 instances of Abu Dhabi for something ambient with a little rhythm.

What was interesting, is that I started noticing some Voice Stealing with the 8 instances...or maybe it was my imagination.

I think I'll keep doing these type of exercises, because it really forces you to focus on structure, tone, pace, etc during the creation process...and it's just plain fun to do.

Anyhoo, here's my attempt @ the challenge.

Thanks again Ecamburn for the contribution.

  • Nice tracks @ecamburn & @echoopera
    Did a minimal experiment myself.
Only 1 sample (Ethno Kalima Kit), 1 instance of Abu Dhabi.
I motion recorded the LPF effect in Abu Dhabi.
    IFX: delay, reverb, phaser.

  • Nice R_2. I could hear some nice melodies and leads springing up with that structure...I really liked the shakiness of the piece...it felt like it could collapse on itself at any moment.

    Nice work!
