I hope this will not be misunderstood here but i just hope ware e talking about "real" reviews rather than (i sadly see a lot in iOS) "too" euphoric 5 stars ratings.
While i find that of course important to support our hard working developers we like, i also think sometimes it can be unfair to people who relies on such ratings/reviews.
How can someone rate an app really after 1-2 days f.e.?
Sometimes it sounds it´s like just for the sales increase (which of course is important but shouldn´t be the main in the long term to catch new customers).
So i´m sorry if that critic here is unwanted but i felt to speak it out. If that is not liked here i will hold me back but it´s just my personal meaning that those "blind" 5 stars ratings and fast euphoric hyped ratings (as well as some of those 1 stars ratings) doesn´t help to get more professional apps into the iOS world.
There are no real reviews for iOS. Some guys make awesome useful videos to see a bit about what an app might could do and might sound. But mostly they are also "awesome" euphoric and not serious deep tutorials or reviews.
Of course i don´t say that this is the case in general and i might see it totally wrong.
Now hate me if you like, i can live with it! :#

I get where you're coming from, there is a bit too much riding on the hype train sometimes and banging in a glowing 5 star rating before the app has been fully evaluated. And yes, this does nothing for the reputation of the reviews (a bit like certain games sites rating highly whatever).

My policy is to only rate high if there has been continued support from a responsive dev and the feature set warrants it. Sometimes I'll get in a bit early because the thing is obviously so bloody useful for the $ (for me) and/or it's from a proven dev and has room to grow (e.g. ReSlice, AB3, KRFT).

In Fugue Machine's case it ticks all the above boxes. Of course this rationale is too wordy for an App Store soundbite so we tend to stick the rating in with a short gushing tribute and hope other people rely on organs such as this fair site to get the details from those in the trenches.

I have the same problem. I recently emigrated and consequently changed App Stores. Apps purchased in the old App Store are no longer on my purchased list, and I can't review them.

  • Done. I had really just to update my earlier review, which was glowingly positive because this app is one of my favorites.

As a side note, the rating system is really lousy. There is a certain amount of "grade inflation" going on where really honest reviews and a rating where 3 is average, 4 is excellent, and 5 is the best thing ever isn't used. Crappy system that we all have to live with, unfortunately. I would still have rated this a 5 but I have other apps I have rated a 5 that really I would have given a 4 if it were for the fact that these then get misinterpreted as the app somehow lacking... even though a 4 is an excellent rating.

I have the same problem with year-end reviews for my employees. A 3 is a good rating!

I get where you're coming from but in this case i don't think it's relevant

Most of us have owned Fugue Machine since it's release and are just updating our rating to support a great developer

I wrote a more comprehensive reply to this but it appears to be awaiting moderation ... buggered if I'm typing it again!

Suffice to say that you have a point regarding integrity of reviews but FM is a 5 starrer no problems.

Sadly that's common for these ratings systems

Take the horrible Metacritic for example. It aggregates scores and takes a weighted average between 0-100

So, logically, a 50 would be mediocre but these days, with rating inflation and paid reviews an average rating is more like 70. Any big release is often regarded as bad if it scores below 75-80. It's a stupid system but then again, so are reviews unless it's from someone you trust

I use videos and user feedback to decide on purchases now because i find reviews to be completely unreliable

As for app reviews, i usually only bother if it's either exceptionally good as in this case or exceptionally bad. I would prefer if Apple displayed user stats on apps such as number of downloads, hours used, consecutive days opened etc. but that doesn't look like it's going happen any time soon

Sry, but how could anyone sane consider less than 5 stars.
I get the principle of course, but come on. This one is in a league of its own.

I could honestly rate Fugue Machine five stars after 1-2 hours. I know what I like and I know what I want. It is easy to use and get great results.

Not instances as in AU but you can use it multiple times as midi input, either a specific playhead or all of them but i don't think you could run 4 actual different instances playing different patterns at once

Thank you :) I was confused a bit (and excited) looking at screenshots inside AB3 ,where I saw multiple Fugue Machine instances . But they are 'only' midi inputs , which is cool ,but I'll wait until the dev implements a way (AU?) to have many playhead 'racks'...

  • @nw1 said:
For the 6th star... is there a way to MIDI trigger pattern changes? (e.g. so one could build a simple song out of patterns?)

Love the app but it does leave me wanting that little more (because the base of it is so useful, and a great sketchpad for new ideas and cool sequences)

hey hey, if I understand correctly, you may already be able to accomplish what you want. If you go to More Menu > Settings > MIDI Input Settings, and set 'Receive Program Change' to ON, incoming Program Changes will change the patterns in the Pattern Library.

/ If you'd like to MIDI Note Messages (or any other MIDI message) to make the changes, perhaps you can use MidiFlow to route from [whatever messages you want] to Program Changes.

    Hope this helps :]
