Using iPhone on stage

Hi, my first post here :-)

I have read about quite a few people who use their iPads on stage. For the people who use iPhone on stage (do they exist?), I am wondering how you have set up you rig. In particular:
-Do you use an external audio interface or something like PlugKey? I think the headphone out is generally fine-sounding but was wondering how the connection holds up during live use.
-Where do you place your iPhone relative to the keyboard? I am thinking of getting a car dashboard holder for my phone, but can't seem to get a simple one that would easily connect to my midi keyboard.

Thanks

  • I used a car phone holder and screwed on to the base a large alligator clip that connects to the back of my keyboard stand. I've tried both direct to the headphone jack as well as Steinberg UR22MK2 Mk2 and honestly can't tell any difference in sound quality between the two.
    Don't forget airplane mode!

  • A few years ago I was used ThumbJam and iShred through the headphone jack.

In a pinch today I'd just connect to my Block Rocker via bluetooth. ;)

Note that I neither perform often or seriously... ;)

  • Don't forget airplane mode!

Good tip regardless of iPhone or iPad. Not sure how incoming calls affect MIDI, but it would suck to have the wife seated in the concert hall when the GF's call came over the PA.

  • Thanks for the replies. I might go for one of these bicycle phone holders where the connectors are supported a bit better, and will try without an audio interface first. Good tip about the airplane mode!

I have something like this. It allows me to use a tripod iPhone mount on a standard stage mic stand.

  • I build my own too but there are ik products to cover this needs.

  • This is my home solution. Now looking for something to attach it to my iRig Keys Pro with 37 keys.

  • I will usually stand on a milk crate on stage, and extend my arm as high as I can into the air. The idea is to get as high above the crowd as possible.

Then, I play the crap out of @sonosaurus ThumbJam while pumping my other fist in the air.

    Nice! Nice and compact.

  • Another thing to be aware of, is that if you're out of range from a cell signal and aren't in Airplane mode, your battery will drain faster than you can say it. The phone uses a lot of power looking for a signal, so definitely go airplane mode as mentioned above. Found this out the hard way using Kapture pad on my phone at a party deep in the woods. Barely got through the gig before the phone died.

Also, my shelf is littered with lithium battery packs.

    My 2.5 faves:

    I like Ravpower.

Hootoo elite is a battery/hotspot combo. Perfect for Link, as @Alexandernaut observed when I showed it to him.

I also keep a credit card sized hyperjuice to recharge my iPhone for times when I'm in SF all day and night.
