Request for soundfont conversion: sonatina symphonic orchestra

Hi all,

I have a request: I would love to use the Sonatina symphonic orchestra soundfont in BS16i.

http://sso.mattiaswestlund.net/

The problem is that this library is only available as separate sfz files or, in various other places on the internet, as separate sf2 files. To use this library in BS16i the single files need to be combined in a single sf2 file. I'm on Mac and haven't been able to find the right software to do this. I'd be very thankful if someone could help me out and do the conversion for me. Sonatina is a great library and would be a nice addition to the existing ipad soundpacks.

Best Regards,

Maarten

I have the Saint James Orchestra in sound font sf2 form, and I believe San Jose Orchestra comes in sound font sf2 form.

  • @Maarten: Here you go!

I have imported this into bs16i only today :)

If you can get to the file on your ipad, you should be able to 'open in' bs16i

On a slight OT tangent I used some of the actual Sonatina samples to create some different new instruments in Thumbjam and they sound great!

@AlterEgo_UK: Wow! Thank you very much! After reading about the Sampletank Miroslav update, I thought about Sonatina right away. It's a good free alternative imo. Can you recommend me any HQ ethnic soundfonts? Thanks again!

  • @yowza , curios on how you converted the sf2 to something that TJ likes . I would love to get these into TJ but didn't know the process or way to easily make them TJ instruments. I wish Jesse would make more instruments even as IAP

  • @AlterEgo_UK: did you succeed in loading and playing the Sonatina soundfont in bs16 i? I tried it on my ipod touch 4th gen, but the app keeps crashing after attempting to load Sonatina. I'll try with my iPad next.

  • @thepinkelephant

It's been a while since I made these TJ instruments so hope I remember correctly. You don't convert the sf2, you use the wave samples that are in the Sonatina folder after you download from the original link Maarten posted above and unzip. Pick an instrument say in the Sonatina Horns folder take the staccatto horns and zip up those wave files together and upload to TJ via wifi transfer. Then once the zipped samples are in TJ you use them to create the instrument. You may have to fix the pitch names in TJ's metadata if the pitches don't sound correctly. This is where the details get a little fuzzy as I don't create instruments very often so every time I do it I knock around in TJ a while to remember how to do it :-) You can use any samples you have around to create an instrument in TJ, it's pretty effing cool.

  • I don't have BS16i yet but I hear it doesn't like large soundfonts so maybe it doesn't like the large 500 mb Sonatina SF2 file. It might be better to break Sonatina up into smaller chunks to make BS16i happy.

  • I have made some SSO instruments for ThumbJam but haven't released them yet, I will do it soon! @yowza, if you care to share the ones you made it could save me some time too :)

I will be putting them in the free downloads part of TJ.

  • @Maarten: oops! Apologies, it seems I actually imported a different soundfont from my dropbox into bs16i by mistake! That worked fine but, no, I can't get the large Sonatina to open in Bs16i either. Sorry!
I guess it must be too big for it to handle.

  • @AlterEgo_UK: Can you clarify please? Is the .sf2 link you provided the right one or is there another, bigger .sf2? I had no problem loading the one you linked to, BTW.

  • @sonosaurus

Sure glad to help out! I'll see what I have, might get me motivated to create more. What do you need from me? Is there a way to export the whole instrument ie samples and data? I don't think I did any fancy xy mapping or anything so you may want to tweak that or let me know a basic template to use. Send me a PM if you want to take off forum.

  • Actually, I'd like to hear what particular SSO instruments are favorites, as I'm not likely to convert them all. Sorry if I hijacked this thread!

  • Just in case someone still needs it, I keep a copy of the Sonatina Symphonic Orchestra sound font in my Dropbox also. https://www.dropbox.com/s/06c8br4e1dcvywy/Sonatina_Symphonic_Orchestra.sf2

I almost don't dare to ask, but could someone split the Sonatina files into a few sections? For: strings, brass, etc. My wish is to use the Sonatina sounds with bs16i so as to have a 16 part multitimbral soundsource to use with cubasis. I know I could also record each part individually through Audiobus, but I really like to compose with midi, so I can edit song parts on the fly. In any case, it's great to see this is such an active forum with a great atmosphere.

  • @Washboy: Yes, the link I gave is to the correct file. What happened was, I had more than one sf2 file in my Dropbox and used 'Open In bs16i' on the other sf2 file by mistake, and thought I had imported the sonatina but it was actually the other one. When I tried to open the sonatina sf2 file in bs16i, I had to wait quite a while before I saw the notice that said it had been imported into the Inbox of bs16i (because it is so big).

When I tried to assign that soundfont to a Library, I got a loading error, and, worse still bs16i said it was unable delete the sf2 file! So, I decided to delete the app and re-install and just keep the standard Midi set because I have found them to do all I need for now.

You say you managed to load the file I linked to? Do you have an iPad4? I only have an iPad2 (32GB with about 4GB free).

I didn't have any problems importing smaller sf2 files into bs16i but a useful subset of the best sounds in sonatina would be great if anyone can come up with one! :)

  • @AlterEGO_UK I'd keep an eye on your memory: I did something similar and I'm pretty sure the "wrong file" didn't get deleted. Eventually I needed a hard reset. I think BS-16i gets iffy at >400mb of soundfont. You can break it down using an appropriate converter program via your PC/MAC.

  • @AlterEgo_UK: Thanks for the clarification. I have an iPad3, which has 1GB RAM (same as iPad4 but double that of iPad2) so that probably means more room for loading soundfonts.

I wonder how much free RAM an iPad2 has, with nothing but bs16i loaded and only the default/preset soundfont loaded (it uses only c.30MB RAM). I have 532MB free (courtesy of System Status app.). However, with only the Sonatina soundfont loaded (using 472MB RAM), I have only 65MB free. That's not enough to run Audiobus or any other apps as well.

Let's hope the near future brings an iPad with 2GB RAM ;)

  • @Ian: Yes, according to the Usage parameter I have not gained the space back after I deleted bs16i with the large soundfont file and re-installed bs16i with just the standard sound set - even after an iPad restart.

@Washboy: I am thinking that the next iPad may be a necessary purchase is I want to carry on with IOS music making using the latest apps that need lots of CPU etc.

  • If you Google "soundfont editor" you'll get a number of hits. I'm not familiar with them, so I don't know if they'll allow you to strip out samples, but it appears that's the intent. I did find a link that lists a few with hyperlinks to each..

  • Ive done some and tried to keep it around 150mb each. I use Vienna soundfont editor, I find it easy, you can mostly drag-n-drop sounds as they are into a new bank

  • i wanted to post this yesterday, but the large 500meg Sonatina file does work straight up in gestrument if you own it. bs-16i said it imported it, but i couldn't find it in the inbox, so i just tried to open in gestrument and it's been working that way.

  • @JMSexton: Is that Creative's VienNa Soundfont editor or SynthFont's Viena Soundfont editor (with one 'n')?

  • Yea what PaulB said!

  • edited August 2013

@JMSexton / @PaulB: Excellent! Thanks for the clarification.

  • I've divided Sonatina up into Strings, Wind and Percussion soundfont files.

  • Ok guys, sorry for off topic, I am new to soundfont kind of stuff... May I know do bs-16i come with midi sequencer? Something in the GarageBand midi sequencer... I saw youtube people using genome midi sequencer, but is there other alternative which is not so costly?

  • @PaulB: thank you very much!
