Beathawk: Possible to create single pad drumkits / multisampled instruments?
The factory content in Beathawk contains single pad drumkits and multisampled pitched instruments.
Is it not possible for a user to create these? Basically I want to map separate samples in pitch mode.
Comments
At the moment, it doesn't appear you can. However, you can visit UVI's Facebook page to message them OR contact them through their website.
Hmm, that's unfortunate. I read the manual before purchasing and it didn't mention those features being restricted to purchased content.
Since the app obviously already supports these features, I don't think it is unreasonable to ask for them to be opened up to users. It kind of defeats the purpose of having 16 tracks if all of them are taken up with single drum samples for one user kit, or multi-pitched samples for a few user instruments.
When this comes out http://intua.net/ , load the beat hawk on its pads as an AU
User sample assignment is done per pad, not per keyboard note. If you assign a sample to a pad, and then go into Pitch mode, you can play it up and down the keyboard. It sounds pretty decent for a couple of octaves. It is a high quality pitch shift algorithm. I think most of the factory instruments are like this too. Only special sound packs like Pianos may have multisamples assigned up and down the keyboard. And even then, it is far from one sample per key, and no velocity layering. There are some drum kits with different hit samples for two octaves, but they are very short single-hit samples, like 1-sec or less. It's a CPU and memory thing to some degree, I think. More complex instruments would only work on the very latest iPads.
I think of it as amazing that they get such high quality sounds out of limited resources.
The AU will be great once fixed, but there is something nice about having the BH all in one option. In another thread, proposed a companion app to make these specialized instruments— serious users could then pay for the privilege of making them, and casual users can just buy packs. I don't want to muddle this already stuffed app with too many features, but I do want want want.
I'd be fine with a short sample restriction, I just want to be able to create a kit the same way as the purchased kits work. I'm sure you can see the difference between a 16 sample drum kit taking up 1 track vs 16 tracks, it's a huge difference! Seems to me to be simply a UI issue, since the engine already supports this.
I think Beathawk is well designed and I enjoy working within it, which is why this omission stands out to me, at least for my desired workflow.
Indeed. That was actually the first thing I tried to do with the app. I assumed I could have something like a "909 Kit" on one pad and then go to Notes mode to play it. There aren't enough pads left after adding one sample per pad to do enough IMO.
Is it possible to use a loop to achieve the same effect?
In the manual, they show a single loop with transient markers and mention that in pitch mode, each transient is mapped to a separate pad. Can we import a loop of sequential drum hits, and have the transients detected so that the samples are automatically spilt across the pitch pads?
It really is the most confounding thing about an otherwise intuitive app. I spent probably an hour trying to figure it out and finally gave up. Glad I'm not alone.
Nope.
I spent about half that before checking over here to find that it's not possible.
TBH, it's not really that big of a deal since you can use it as an AU. There's no reason you couldn't dedicate one instance fully to drums to achieve the same thing.
Easy victories are empty victories! (he rasps loudly in his best Otto Preminger voice).
That will certainly be true when they get the AU display issues fixed up. I use my iPhone on the go a lot and AU display doesn't work. It does work nicely on the iPad though.
For now, until they fix the AU bugs, I simply use three pads at the bottom for basic drums (kick, clap/snare, crash) which I can fill out later, and the rest is for bass, melodies, etc. Hoping the AU bugfix is released soon.
Is it possible to externally create loops that will import into Beathawk with transient markers, the way the IAP loops do?
Nope. Not that either. I guess native loop import should be added to the thread title, too.
BTW— As great as this new version is, which it is— it took ages to get here. I wouldn't hold your breath that these requests will be addressed anytime soon. I have more optimism about the AU fixes, as their arrival will lead directly to more use/sales, but I'm going into Samplr mode on this one for now (enjoy it for what it is).
Squeaking the wheel can't hurt in the meantime, I suppose.
That feature would be amazing
For now, i make a drum loop, export it and then load it on a pad which of course is not ideal but is acceptable as a workaround
The easiest thing to do is just to accept the drum kits
I was just reading in another thread that you can import loops with transient markers in ACID format. Bit of a pain as you would have to do it on the desktop, but it's an option as a workaround for now.
